Nightmare Industry – Italian Horror Documentary

From the producers of the In Search of Darkness documentaries comes a new one that looks to be just amazing! Nightmare Industry is a new documentary coming out soon that is going to cover the Italian horror film industry. With Phillip Escott and Eugenio Ercolani as the co-directors and producers, I have a great feeling that this is going to be essential viewing. According to Escott, they want to “tell the ultimate story about Italian horror cinema.” He also states that their goal for this project is for fans to learn something, which has my support right there! Escott said “I want them to be entertained. I want them to have fun, because that’s what Italian horror cinema is all about. But I also want them to walk away enlightened. I want them to learn. A lot about what went into making these incredible movies.”

Dawn of the Dead at Music Box in Chicago

Now I will admit that out of George Romero’s Dead Trilogy (yes, nothing exists after Day), I would put Dawn of the Dead (1978) as my least favorite. I know, I know, but I will defend that statement!

BUT . . . no matter what, if you have not had the chance to see this film in the theater, and live near the Chicago area, then you need to fix that and come out to the Music Box Theatre, either on Friday, Feb. 4th, or Saturday, Feb. 5th, for a special midnight screening of the original theatrical cut of this epic film. I’ve already checked and this will be screening in the main theater too!

Mystery Photo 12-20

Welcome to Monday! Our last one before the big holiday this weekend, and one more week closer to calling this year over. Still hoping it will be better next year but doesn’t look like we’re heading in that direction anytime soon. But back to the task at hand. Our photo from last week was from the 2010 Hong Kong film Dream Home. First time I watched this one, it just blew me away. I’ve seen it several times since then and it still packs one hell of a punch. Not for the light-hearted, that is for sure. Kudos to the following for sending in the correct answer: Christopher Dyer, Kevin Hart, and Bryan Martinez. Well done!

Now on to this week’s photo. Another “new” title for me and I just loved it, so wanted to pass it on here. Take a peek and see if you recognize it. Just send your answer to me at jon@kitleyskrypt.com. Good Luck!

January Giallo

For the last several months, I’ve been honored to be part of the podcast Kicking the Seat, hosted by Ian Simmons, which he has been going through a bunch giallo films and discussing them with myself, as well as Dr. AC aka Aaron Christensen, and Bryan Martinez from The Giallo Room. The episodes are called Accademia Giallo and we’ve covered a wide range of titles from some familiar ones and some more obscure titles, so if you’re a fan, or want to learn more about this sub-genre, check these out.

Severin Pop-up Store with Day of the Beast Screening!

Next Tuesday, December 7th, at Chicago’s Music Box Theatre, they will be screening Álex de la Iglesia’s 1995 film Day of the Beast with a Severin Films Pop-up Store set up in the lobby, where you can pick up the latest releases from them!

Day of the Beast is about a priest that discovers the exact date when the Anti-Christ will be born and sets about to stop it. Joining him on his quest is a death metal record store clerk and a cheesy TV psychic, as they do their damnedest to save the world from Satan and his offspring! Unlike anything you’ve seen before, this was de la Iglesia’s second film and is just a riot.

The screening starts at 7pm but the pop-up store will be open from 4pm to 7pm. Please note the Music Box is requiring all attending must show a valid photo ID as well as proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test. See the theater’s site for all the events details, by clicking HERE.

Music Box of Horrors Full Lineup

Chicago’s own 24-hour horror movie marathon, The Music Box of Horrors, is back! While there are restrictions to attending (see website for all the details before buying your ticket), they have announced the full lineup for this year’s event. They don’t have the official times listed, but here are the films scheduled to play:

Interview: Miguel Rodriguez, from the Horrible Imaginings Film Fest

Miguel Rodriguez, one of the co-founders of the Horrible Imaginings Film Festival, is just like us, a very passionate fan of horror cinema. In fact, so much so that he started this film fest to help highlight films that he felt needed more attention. And has been doing so since 2009. So we decided to take a few minutes before this year’s festival started and pick his brain about the genre and what makes it so special to him.

Kitley’s Krypt: Let’s start at the beginning. How long have you been a fan of the horror genre, and what does it mean to you being a serious follower?

Miguel Rodriguez: Horror grew up with me. Most people say they grew up with horror, but I feel like we grew up together. My grandmother used to tell me extremely terrifying stories growing up, as did others in my family. She loved scary movies, and we would often watch them together. We didn’t speak easily because of language barriers (I was not taught Spanish growing up), but horror movies were a way to relate.

As far as what it means to me to be a serious follower, that can be a bit challenging. It is funny to try to answer this question now, because I was just having a discussion with some friends who were talking about relationships, and they were complaining about people who needed to have all the same pop culture loves as their partners. I found it interesting and nodded with a lot of their points about two people loving all the same things being boring, and people having their own personalities. The thing I had to realize for myself, though, was that an understanding and love for horror is so integral to my worldview that any partner of mine would HAVE to share it.

Just in case you might be late to the party, next weekend, Aug. 27th & 28th, at the Skyline Drive-in, they are holding their 10th annual Super Monster Movie Fest, with the theme this year of The Devil Made Us Do It, featuring 10 films dealing all things with the devil! We’ve been coming out to this event pretty much every year since 2012, and once again, we’re excited as hell to head out there next weekend as well!

Here is the final lineup and times for this year’s features:

Flashback Weekend A Howling Success!

I just wanted to give a little bit of a shout out to Mike and Mia Kerz, and the whole Flashback Family, for giving us fans an incredible weekend. That was our first show in close to 2 years, which was just killing us not to be around our convention family and friends. But it did happen this last weekend, at the beautiful Hyatt Regency Hotel, and we had a blast.

I didn’t get a chance to take too many photos over the 3-day event mainly because we were so busy at our table! Never a bad thing. But we got to chat with plenty of fellow fans, sold a bunch of horror reference books, and got to hang out until the wee hours in the morning talking about the genre we love!
