That’s right, kiddies! Next weekend we will be heading to Cincinnati for our first show of 2025, and it feels like forever since we’ve been able to hang out with so many other like-minded deviants! They have a damn good guest lineup with some horror royalty appearing, such as the one and only Barbara Steele, star of classics like Mario Bava’s Black Sunday (1960), Roger Corman’s The Pit and the Pendulum (1961), David Cronenberg’s Shivers (1975), Joe Dante’s Piranha (1978), and so many more. Also attending is Linda Blair, a reunion from Evil Dead (2013) with Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, and Lou Taylor Pucci, Christina Lindberg from Thriller: A Cruel Picture aka They Call Her One Eye (1973), 11 guests from the Terrifier films, Henry Winkler, and many more. You can find all the latest and full guest lineup by clicking HERE.

Royalty at HorrorHound Weekend
While the horror conventions are filled with guests from the latest horror films out there, such as the Terrifier films, who have been making the rounds for almost the last decade, we also see names from the Child’s Play movies, Re-Animator (which is making its 40-year anniversary), guests from the Hellraiser films, and many more. We even get some big names like Robert Englund still making the rounds. But when it comes to the decades even before all of them, going back 60 years, there aren’t too many of them left that made the impact that Barbara Steele did.

To end our very busy “vacation” and our last report on it, we headed to PA for our last convention of the year. While Monster Bash didn’t start until Friday, Nov. 1st, since it is about an 8-hour drive for us, if we can, we try to leave Thursday and just take our time. It doesn’t take away from the long-ass drive, but at least we are not tired as hell come Friday night. It gives us time to unload and set up our booth a bit and just take our time. Honestly wasn’t too thrilled about driving 8 hours on Halloween day, but such is the con-life, you know?

In just a few days, we’ll be heading into Rosemont, IL for this year’s Flashback Weekend. Out of all the conventions we attend each year, Flashback in the only one in our backyard. We’ve been at every single one since they started in August of 2002, and they have remained the best horror convention in the Chicagoland area. And this year is going to be even bigger with a massive guest list they have lined up.
With reunions for 3 different films (Cabin Fever, The Thing, and The Warriors), plus more than a few people connected with the Halloween series, and so many more, this is going to be epic. Plus, you also have directors like Sam Raimi, Eli Roth, Charles Band, and especially Don Coscarelli from the Phantasm series. Then there is Michael Gross from the Tremors series, Quinn Lord from Trick ‘r Treat, and many, many more.

Now, I’m talking about us horror fans (which I’m guessing would be the only ones reading this!), but I am once again reminded on how great of a time we are living in, as horror fans. Yes, I know, the world is in turmoil right now, with us on the brink of destruction. But guess what, it always seems to be, or at least has been multiple times in my lifetime. So why not take a second and look at some positive things going on that, while doesn’t solve all the world’s problems, it does make you realize that there are some pretty damn cool things, even if it is just related to that “silly monster stuff”.

It’s been a very busy last month or so here at the Krypt, which is probably why there hasn’t been a ton of updates lately. But being busy isn’t a bad thing, especially when it is doing stuff you love, and I have definitely had my plate of fun more than filled! From a Godzilla marathon, library lectures (while trying to figure things out on PowerPoint!), writing assignments, our podcast, and more, it has been a whirlwind of chaos. The only downside of this last month was the passing of my cousin Brett. While at random times that still hits me out of nowhere, I know that he was one of my biggest supporters in what I do, which means I need to continue on.

I know I posted something earlier in the year about Chicago’s Flashback Weekend, taking place Aug. 2nd-4th in Rosemont, IL, where they’re having a reunion for John Carpenter’s The Thing (1982), with almost all the remaining cast attending. They had announced 6 of the cast, Keith David, Richard Masur, David Clennon, Thomas G. Waites, Joel Polis, and Peter Maloney, but now have recently announced Adrienne Barbeau. Sure, she may not physically appear in the film, remember that she did provide the voice for the computer chess game!
They had also announced a huge reunion for the cult film The Warriors (1979), with Michael Beck, James Remar, Dorsey Wright, Brian Tyler, David Harris, Terry Michos, and Thomas G. Waites doing double duty.

Earlier this month, Damien and Aaron, and I, your wonderful hosts of Discover the Horror Podcast, all met up at the spring show of Cinema Wasteland. Not only did we have the usual great time, but we also took some time to record some of other’s thoughts on why they like coming to Cinema Wasteland, and what is it about it that sets it apart. Below is the result! Make sure you like and subscribe (and share) the Discover the Horror YouTube channel, where we will have more stuff coming!
Attack of the Con Crud!
Last weekend, we hit our first convention of the year, HorrorHound Weekend in Cincinnati. That has traditionally been our first show of the year, and our biggest. And this year was no different. A huge crowd of people came out, on all three days, and it seemed that everyone had a great time. We spent most of our time behind our tables, having plenty of time to chat with friends, both old and new, as well as selling a lot of books, which honestly just makes my heart swell. Sure, that is what we are there for, to make money, but with every book that I sell, it means that there is a fan out there that is willing to take the time to read and learn about something they love. With the age of the internet, with people reading on their phones and Kindles, I just love it when I see someone still doing it old school! Gives me hope, not only as a bookseller, but as a fan.
