Earlier this month, Damien and Aaron, and I, your wonderful hosts of Discover the Horror Podcast, all met up at the spring show of Cinema Wasteland. Not only did we have the usual great time, but we also took some time to record some of other’s thoughts on why they like coming to Cinema Wasteland, and what is it about it that sets it apart. Below is the result! Make sure you like and subscribe (and share) the Discover the Horror YouTube channel, where we will have more stuff coming!

Eco-Horror and Maximal Melt at Facets
This Friday and Saturday, at Facets in Chicago, they will be having a double and triple feature playing that is simply must-see. On Friday, they will be screening Godzilla vs the Smog Monster (1971) and Frogs (1972), both films trying to warn us about the dangers of the ecological damage we’re doing. Plus, they are just damn fun movies! We will actually have a small table in the lobby on Friday, and will have copies of my book, Discover the Horror, for sale as well as a few other book titles. I’ll also have T-shirts for our podcast, also called Discover the Horror, for sale as well. So, if you’re coming out on Friday, make sure you stop by and say hello! Click HERE for tickets.

Last weekend, we hit our first convention of the year, HorrorHound Weekend in Cincinnati. That has traditionally been our first show of the year, and our biggest. And this year was no different. A huge crowd of people came out, on all three days, and it seemed that everyone had a great time. We spent most of our time behind our tables, having plenty of time to chat with friends, both old and new, as well as selling a lot of books, which honestly just makes my heart swell. Sure, that is what we are there for, to make money, but with every book that I sell, it means that there is a fan out there that is willing to take the time to read and learn about something they love. With the age of the internet, with people reading on their phones and Kindles, I just love it when I see someone still doing it old school! Gives me hope, not only as a bookseller, but as a fan.
It’s Rondo Time!
That’s right, folks, it’s that time of year again. The official ballot has been cast for the annual Rondo Awards celebrating 2023. I have been fortunate enough to have been nominated in 3 different categories this year, a personal best, I believe!
But before I get to all that gloating, I wish to congratulate everyone who has been nominated, and a special shoutout to my personal friends that were as well. They are Rod Barnett, Eric McNaughton, Darrell Buxton & the We Below Dead family, Christopher Wayne Curry, Anthony Taylor, John Bowen, Ron Adams, Richard J. Schellbach, Derek Koch, and my HorrorHound family: Aaron Crowell, Nathan Hanneman, Ernie Rockelman, Jessica Dwyer, and Jason Edmiston.

2023 was one crazy year. A lot of things changed, had some amazing travel adventures, another year on the convention circuit, movie screenings and marathons, and more than a few visits to the drive-ins. Plenty of be grateful for really. That should be the first thing to mention because it is one that we only bring up on certain holidays, when it should be celebrated each and every day. It is a time to not only look at the upcoming year, but also to look back on your accomplishments from 2023. Sometimes, just getting through the year is something to be proud of, because we know that that alone can be difficult. So don’t think you have to list off a dozen or so things that you did. Just be proud of what you did. But we can always make those lists of what we want to do in 2024. I don’t like to use the word resolution because that seems to come and go with the holiday. Write it down. Make a list. Set a goal. And then work your way there. Doesn’t have to be a huge one either. Could be just to watch all the Hammer Frankenstein films. Then on to the next thing. Most importantly, remember why you put it on your list in the first place. Have fun with it.
My website hit the 25 anniversary this year. Still hard to believe, but honestly, when you know how stubborn I can be, it makes perfect sense. The Krypt has helped keep my passion alive and well, as well as thriving. It is the one place I can go and spout my views and opinions to those that are always checking in with what this slightly obsessive horror fan has to say. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate everyone’s continued support. So, thank you!
Discover the Horror LIVE This Wednesday!!!
In two days, at 8pm (CST), we will be celebrating our 50th episode by doing a LIVE show! The best part is that there will be a chat room, so you are welcome to ask questions, make comments, and maybe even count how many times Jon swears, or has technical difficulties, which then usually leads to more swearing!
Your Hosts:
Jon Kitley – Damien Glonek – Aaron AuBuchon
The plan is to go live at 8pm, and we’ll have a few subjects that we’ll be covering, but the main point of this is to hear from our fans. If you have suggestions for a possible topic, let’s hear it! If there is a particular episode that you really enjoyed, let us know! If there was a movie you watched because of one of our episodes and really enjoyed it, let’s hear it!

To Celebrate our 50th show, we are going to try something a little different. Heavy on the “try” part! We are going to do a live show, that will be streaming on YouTube and where you’ll be able to interact with us, asking some questions or make comments. We don’t have the link just yet but will post it everywhere once we do get it.
This momentous event will take place 2 weeks from today, on August 23rd, at 8pm CST. This will have video, so you’ll be able to see as well as just listen this time out. Or at least until I run into the usual technical difficulties I tend to each show. But we’re going to give it a whirl anyway!
Mark your calendar, stay tuned for more details, and come to the show with your questions and comments! See you in 2 weeks!
Discover the Horror Hits 10K Downloads!
Back in October of 2021, Aaron AuBuchon, Damien Glonek, and myself started the Discover the Horror podcast, with the goal of getting listeners to seek out other films that they hadn’t seen before, or taking another look at ones they had seen, maybe seeing it a little differently than before. I’d like to think we’ve consistently done that with each and every episode.
Well, it seems that last week, we hit 10,000 downloads! Now honestly, since I’m about as technical savvy as an abacus, I have no idea to what the magnitude of that number actually means, but it does tell me that people are listening to the shows and more importantly, coming back for more. We strive to create a show that hopefully sparks that passion inside the listener to take that extra step, or a bigger step, into the genre. As I’ve said before, as fans of the genre, this isn’t a race, but an incredible journey we’re all on together, all being on the same path, just at different points along the way.

The nominations for the Rondo Awards have been announced, with plenty of great names and titles to be voting on. Remember, for most of the nominees, what they are being praised for is done out of passion and love for the horror, sci-fi, fantasy, classic monsters, or whatever genre you want to call it, but it is what we all share the same passion with. Winning one of these awards would not only help put their name on the map but give them a little assurance of what they are doing actually means something. So, take a few minutes to go through the list of nominations and send in your vote. You can see the whole list and all the info you need to vote by going to the official website by clicking HERE.
Now, I do have to take a few seconds to mention that my column in HorrorHound magazine, They Came from the Krypt, has been nominated for Best Column, so I would love to have your vote.
Plus, it seems our little podcast endeavor, Discover the Horror, that I do along with my good friends and fellow deviants, Damien Glonek and Aaron AuBuchon, has been nominated for Best Podcast as well. So again, we’d love to get your vote.
And while I would never tell you to vote for another podcast besides our’s, S.A. Bradley’s Hellbent for Horror is a bit of alright as well!
Another personal note, another good friend of mine, Gavin Schmitt, has his book Karl Freund: The Life and Films, has been nominated as well. So maybe give him a consideration as well!
But seriously, take a few minutes, go through the list and vote from the heart. If you don’t know anything in that category, just skip it. You don’t have to vote in everything, but just the ones you know.
Discover the Horror Podcast: Episode 35 – The Devil
The Evil (1978), Angel Heart (1987), and Mr. Frost (1990). From the very first horror film, Georges Méliès’ The House of the Devil from 1896, the Devil started his film career and has been going strong ever since! Appearing in a variety of roles, from bit parts to main characters, from comedies to dramas, from the campy to straight up terrifying, Satan has made his appearance numours times over the last century. But it is his appearance in the horror genre, of course, where we are focusing.
In this episode, we discuss three different titles, with three very difference actors, playing different characterizations of Satan, but all of them entertaining and well worth seeking out. Or at least we think so.
Films mentioned in this episode:
