Music Box Celebrates Horror in October!

This year’s Music Box of Horrors, their annual 24-hour horror movie marathon, as we know sold-out in record time this year. Literally within minutes. Just crazy. But honestly, it shouldn’t be a surprise with what the Music Box has been programming, with plenty of stuff to keep us horror fiends excited all year long. They have announced a few more titles for this year’s marathon, which we have everything they have listed on their website below, or you can just click HERE to right to their page.

Flashback Weekend Coming!

In just 6 days, we’ll be heading into Rosemont for this year’s Flashback Weekend! As usual, they have an incredible guest list. There is a Re-Animator reunion with Jeffrey Combs, Barbara Crampton, and Bruce Abbott, which is celebrating its 40-year anniversary! Along with a reunion for The Howling (1981), with director Joe Dante, and stars Dee Wallace and Belinda Belaski. Of course, Robert Englund is also appearing! Then there is a Terrifier reunion with 11 guests from the film series. But also, names like Devon Sawa, Charles Band, Kane Hodder, Danielle Harris, Adam Green, Ken Kirzinger, Amanda Wyss, Tuesday Knight, Andras Jones, and more.

Of course, there is also the HUGE dealer room filled with plenty of goodies to tempt money from your wallets. And as always, we will be vending there as well, with our usual array of horror reference books, while my wife will have her selection of Horror Slave custom pillows, tote bags, and more.

Royalty at HorrorHound Weekend

While the horror conventions are filled with guests from the latest horror films out there, such as the Terrifier films, who have been making the rounds for almost the last decade, we also see names from the Child’s Play movies, Re-Animator (which is making its 40-year anniversary), guests from the Hellraiser films, and many more. We even get some big names like Robert Englund still making the rounds. But when it comes to the decades even before all of them, going back 60 years, there aren’t too many of them left that made the impact that Barbara Steele did.

Night of Fun and Horror at the Midway Drive-In

This last Saturday, we were at the Midway Drive-in, located in Dixon, IL, for their From Dusk-To-Dawn show, where they screened Wes Craven’s A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) from a 35mm print, then Don Coscarelli’s Phantasm (1979), Joe Dante’s Piranha (1978), and then ending the night (or morning) with Terror Train (1980). We’ve been coming to the Midway for well more than a decade, seeing so many incredible films there on their huge 90ft. screen. And yesterday was no different.

Dusk-To-Dawn Horrorfest at the Midway Drive-in!

The Midway Drive-in has announced 3 out of the 4 titles for this year’s Dusk-to-Dawn Horrorfest, and it’s going to be another great night! Celebrating the 40th anniversary of the movie that started it all for Freddy Krueger, with A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984). With this film, Wes Craven changed the game when it comes to the horror genre, for the 2nd time in his career, and wouldn’t be the last time either! Forget all the silly one-liners and comedic elements, the first is where we see Krueger the scariest! Come check it out and see why it is still as effective after all these years.

Dick Miller – Rest in Peace

dick miller - ripWow. This one stings. Whether you grew up watching the early black and white classics from Roger Corman or the Joe Dante flicks from the ’80s and ’90s, you knew who Dick Miller was. Even if he was in the smallest of parts, when he appeared on screen, it was usually followed by “Hey! It’s Dick Miller!”

Yesterday, Miller passed away at the age of 90 years old. He had close to 200 screen credits, starting way back in 1954, in Roger Corman’s Apache Woman, as an Indian named Tall Tree, even though he appeared as other characters in the film as well. This started a long time relationship with Corman. The following year, Miller appeared in his first genre picture, Corman’s It Conquered the World with Lee Van Cleef, Peter Graves, and Beverly Garland. He would stay with Corman’s company for many more productions, such as Not of this Earth (1957), Bucket of Blood (1959), The Terror (1963) and so many more. In the ’80s, he was a constant regular in pretty much anything Joe Dante directed, such as The Howling (1981).

Miller could have the smallest of roles, sometimes in just one little scene, but he would make an impact that fans would remember. And even though he has now left us, remember that he has also left us a treasure trove of wonderful memories that have been captured on film, for us to enjoy and to continue to enjoy for generations to come. Dick Miller was at the very first horror convention I ever attended, back in 1988. He was a legend then, and 30 years later, he still is one. And in another 30 years, he still will be a legend. Actually even more…he’s freakin’ Dick Miller!

Our thoughts go out to his friends and family during this difficult time.

Studies on Joe Dante’s The Howling

Howling BookCentipede Press has recently released a new volume in their Studies in the Horror Film series, this time taking a deep and dark look into Joe Dante’s The Howling. While it is one of Dante’s earlier films, it still remains one of his best known titles, for many good reasons. Now, thanks to Lee Gambin, you can read more about this film than you ever thought possible!

Over 350 pages, loaded with color photos and an new introduction by Dee Wallace, this book includes rare behind-the-scenes photos, most of which have never been published before. There are interviews with the likes of Dee Wallace, Belinda Balaski, Dick Miller, Don McLeod, John Hora, John Sayles, Robert Picardo, and others. And of course, Joe Dante.

But there is more! According to the blurb from Centipede Press, you will also get “the definitive story of the making of The Howling, complete with an insightful plot synopsis and complete critical analysis, behind the scenes information, and a slew of interviews with cast and crew. Movie Review: Hammer Horror – The Warner Bros. Years

So…a new documentary on Hammer Studios? I’m there. Simple as that. Add to the fact that when the producers of this documentary started a Kickstarter fund to get this project off the ground, I immediately signed up. Honestly, I don’t remember which level I put in for, but I did get a nice poster print as well as the Blu-ray. Being a huge fan of this famous British studio, this review might be a little jaded, but I will try to be as honest and straight forward as I can.

If you ever wondered just what happened to Hammer Studios, as to why they went under, then this feature length documentary will either answer that, or at least give you some very strong contributing factors that might have caused it. Even though this studio was very successful in the late ’50s and ’60s, by the time the ’60s were coming to a close, things were starting to change. Not with just the audiences, but the ratings boards, other movies the studios were releasing, as well as where Hammer was getting their funding from.
