New Invisible Man Book

I know that collecting books can be a slightly obsessive, especially when you are an equally obsessive horror movie fan. For me, there is always that never-ending quest for knowledge about the films we love. Whether they are the old classics to even newer films. I strongly believe that the more you know about a film, you will see it in a different light, no matter the quality of the actual finished product.

Of course, the Universal horror films of the ’30s that were really the start of the film genre, and while they are all around the hundred-year anniversary mark, we seem to continue to get more books on the subject. And while my wallet and my bookshelves might complain, I do not!

The latest edition that I just saw was the new book by Christopher Lock, called The Invisible Man: The Complete History of the 1933 Horror Classic, which just came out. I had recently read Lock’s book on The Bride of Frankenstein, and thoroughly enjoyed it, finding a lot of interesting information in there. So, when I saw this one, I knew I would be adding it to my library. Plus, this might be the first book to cover James Whale’s 1933 adaption of the H.G. Wells novel. I have several books on the Universal Classics, but not on only this particular film. I know there is one by Philip J. Riley, but that is just on an early version of the script when Boris Karloff was attached to the project. According the blub on this new volume by Lock, it is the “only in-depth book in publication solely dedicated to this iconic film; from conception, to production, and beyond.”

Royalty at HorrorHound Weekend

While the horror conventions are filled with guests from the latest horror films out there, such as the Terrifier films, who have been making the rounds for almost the last decade, we also see names from the Child’s Play movies, Re-Animator (which is making its 40-year anniversary), guests from the Hellraiser films, and many more. We even get some big names like Robert Englund still making the rounds. But when it comes to the decades even before all of them, going back 60 years, there aren’t too many of them left that made the impact that Barbara Steele did.

2024 Year in Review: The Highlights Part 1

This is going to be a tough year to review when, as I’m starting to write this, I’m still dealing with Covid!*** Or maybe this is the perfect time because in the midst of being miserable, it does show me all the positive things that happened this year. That is one thing I’ve definitely learned in my old age, especially in the last few years, that there are great things going on all the time that need to be acknowledged, just as much, if not more, as any negative or problems that arise. Honestly, even just the “good” things need to be acknowledged. Because yes, they are all there. It just depends on what and how much time you want to focus on one and not the other. It might just be the cough medicine talking, but I do think if we all started to focus on the good, as well as spreading that around to others, I do think we can make a difference. I’m not saying ignore the bad things, because they will continue. But don’t forget to realize that is not all that is out there.

Don’t get me wrong, these next few years are going to be tough. But if we give into the negativity, we all lose. Doesn’t mean we sit back and do nothing, but if we are polite and kind to others, even giving a little bit of praise to those that are working hard, little things like could have a huge impact on someone who might be struggling at the moment. And it really doesn’t take much of an effort, does it? Okay, enough preaching.

This year was once again filled with some incredible adventures and plenty of memories. These are the things that make me realize how great it is to be a film fan. 2024 was an incredible year for the horror genre, with a ton of releases coming out, some of them being just amazing.

***Also, as I am now ready to post this, I am thankfully covid free and feeling a hell of a lot better than when I started this!

Mother’s Day (1980), Madman (1981), Pieces (1982), and Evil Dead Trap (1988)

When you’re talking about horror films with most non-horror fans, they usually are thinking about the slashers which they seem to encapsule all of that genre. But when us fans start to dig into that sub-genre, that’s when the questions arise, parameters seemed like they have to set, even though plenty of the films go out of their way to beyond said parameters. As if any were meant to stay between the lines!

Then you start to delve into when the sub-genre started, which can then start another round of questions and discussions.

To help get those arguments . . . we mean discussions started, in this episode we’re going to cover 4 different slasher films, granted, of varying types, but we feel still fits into the category of slasher films. And to help with this, we’ve invited Aaron Crowell, Managing Editor of HorrorHound Magazine back to join in the conversation.

Attack of the Con Crud!

Last weekend, we hit our first convention of the year, HorrorHound Weekend in Cincinnati. That has traditionally been our first show of the year, and our biggest. And this year was no different. A huge crowd of people came out, on all three days, and it seemed that everyone had a great time. We spent most of our time behind our tables, having plenty of time to chat with friends, both old and new, as well as selling a lot of books, which honestly just makes my heart swell. Sure, that is what we are there for, to make money, but with every book that I sell, it means that there is a fan out there that is willing to take the time to read and learn about something they love. With the age of the internet, with people reading on their phones and Kindles, I just love it when I see someone still doing it old school! Gives me hope, not only as a bookseller, but as a fan.

HorrorHound 100th Issue!

It was way back in April of 2006, when Aaron Crowell walked up to my vendor table at Cinema Wasteland and handed me a copy of this new magazine they had just started, called simply enough HorrorHound. While I did a thing here and there for them, I officially became a columnist for them with issue #16, which was in 2009. Now, here is it 2024 and issue #100 is about to hit the newsstands. Where the hell did the time go?

I grew up with horror magazines, being the starting point for my horror education. While there were the reference books, it was magazines like Fangoria, Gorezone, Famous Monsters, and Cinefastique leading the way, along with other titles like Rue Morgue, HorrorFan, Slaughterhouse, Monsterscene, and countless others that came out over the years, was where we learned about our favorite movies and those behind them. So, to think that at some point in the future, I would be a staff writer for one of the leading magazines out there now is pretty surreal.

Discover the Horror Podcast Episode 32 – Conventions: The Promoter!

In our final episode in our Convention Trilogy, where we’ve already covered the fans and the dealers, we now take a step back even further to the ones that put on the show in the first place, the promoters. These are the people that rent the hotels and convention centers, get the guests, round up the vendors, do the advertising, promotions, all in the hopes in giving the fans that show up a good time with plenty to see and do. When things go wrong, they take the heat for it, but seldom get the credit when things go right, so we wanted to take a peek behind the curtain, as it were, and learn a little about what actually goes into putting on one of these conventions. To get the insight into that side of the conventions, we’ve invited Nathan Hanneman, editor in chief of HorrorHound Magazine and one of the main persons behind the Horrorhound Weekend conventions.

And just looking at the huge guest lineup, it looks like this is going to be one hell of a show, as always. There is going to be someone there for all fans of the genre, from a Hocus Pocus reunion, a Killer Klowns from Outer Space reunion with the Chiodo Bros., stars Grant Cramer and Suzanne Synder, as well as Harrod Blank & Mike Martinez who played a couple of the Klowns, to so much more. You have Ron Perlman, Doug Jones, Anthony Michael Hall, Quinn Lord, Dana Delorenzo & Ray Santiago, and so many more. They even have Milly Shaprio from Hereditary!

HorrorHound Weekend: A Huge Success!

This last weekend was our first stop in the 2022 Kryptic World Tour, the HorrorHound Weekend in Cincinnati. If this is a sign for the things to come, this is going to be a great year! I was shocked and amazed at the turnout for this show, on all three days. Now anybody that has been to more than a few conventions know that Friday and Saturday are usually the busier days, and Sunday is just for stragglers wandering around. But the crowd for this Sunday seemed just as big as it was for the previous two days! In fact, our sales were so good on Sunday, we sold more stuff on that day than we had over three days at some smaller shows! So, a huge shout out to Nathan & Aaron, as well as all the other HorrorHound workers that made this show go as smoothly as it did and made it a lot of fun.
