NotLD on the Big Screen in 35mm!

When is the last time you got to see George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead in a theater? From a 35mm print? Now when it the last time you got to see it on a 90-ft. screen? And on a drive-in that was around and running when this horror classic first opened way back in 1968? Then mark the date of May 18th on your calendar, because if you head out to the Midway Drive-in in Sterling, IL, not only will you be able to see the zombie film that started it all, in 35mm, but you’ll also get to see the two sequels, Dawn of the Dead (1978) and Day of the Dead (1985), and finally The Crazies (1973), of three of which are being screened from DCP.

Mystery Photo 4-29

Our photo from last week was from the 2009 Ti West film, House of the Devil, and the lovely woman in the photo is actually Greta Gerwig, future writer/director of Barbie (2023). Oh, how the great ones start in these low budget horror films. I’ve been a movie poster collector for over 30 years. The cost of what I will spend has gone up a bit over those three decades. In the past, the thought of spending $50 on a single poster was way too much for me to even consider. Then I saw an American 1-sheet for The Green Slime for $50. I bought it instantly. Now, I’m still not one of these big-time collectors, spending hundreds and hundreds of dollars on them, mainly just because of my budget. But what I will spend has increased to even dropping $175 for an Astro Zombies 1-sheet. I mean, it’s Ted V. Mikels!

Mystery Photo 4-22

The sun is still up from where I’m sitting, so it is still Monday! I was going to get this posted this morning and then quickly realized I hadn’t even gotten the post written, so there you go. But we’re here now, so that is all that matters, right? Right! Our photo from last week might have been too easy for a few of you, especially if you were at Facets in Chicago the Saturday night before for their melting triple feature they were running. One of which, was The Devil’s Rain (1975), which I had forgotten just how much of an impact it had made with me, so I used it for the photo! Starring Richard Carlson, Susan Gordon, Lugene Sanders, Juli Reding, Joe Turkel

Director Bert I. Gordon, or known to most fans as Mr. BIG, got that moniker because of the unusual sizes of the subjects of his films, from giant grasshoppers, dinosaurs, spiders, and angry men. So, it was a quite the change of pace when he came up with this simple story about a ghostly revenge on a seemingly innocent man. While there is nothing giant here, Gordon still was able to pull off some of his unusual and interesting camera tricks, including a talking head sitting on an end table.

DtH Episode 68 – Made for TV Horrors 3

The Ghost of Sierra de Cobre (1964), Crowhaven Farm (1970), and Cruise into Terror (1978)

With this being our 3rd episode covering these little television terrors, one would get the idea that there is a lot of teleplays, or TV-movies, out there that deserve our attention. And you would be correct! From the ’60s into the early ’80s, there was a plethora of amazing features being made for the little boob tube, not to mention a wide variety to talent behind them too!

Unfortunately, a lot of these titles still wander in limbo with never getting a legitimate release, some never even seeing a VHS release. While you can find a lot on YouTube, we’re all hoping for a real legitimate release at some point. Until then, we do what we must to see some incredible cinema!

So, grab your notepad because we’re going to discuss 3 titles that are definitely worth your time and hope to spark you to take a little further adventure into Made-for-TV Terrors!

Eco-Horror and Maximal Melt at Facets

This Friday and Saturday, at Facets in Chicago, they will be having a double and triple feature playing that is simply must-see. On Friday, they will be screening Godzilla vs the Smog Monster (1971) and Frogs (1972), both films trying to warn us about the dangers of the ecological damage we’re doing. Plus, they are just damn fun movies! We will actually have a small table in the lobby on Friday, and will have copies of my book, Discover the Horror, for sale as well as a few other book titles.
