Welcome to our first Mystery Photo for September! That means we made it through the brutal heat the end of August gave us, and that we are even closer to October! I know it is going to seem like time will fly, and it will be November before we know it, so make sure we all take the time to enjoy the ride while we can! Our last photo was from the film My Dear Killer (1972), which has the most unusual, amazing, and unforgettable opening kill, which was present in the pic we posted. Back from the Dead

Well . . . hopefully. In case you were wondering why no updates or much of anything from me over the last week is that coming back from the amazing weekend at the Skyline Drive-in and their annual Super Monster Movie Fest, when I got up Monday morning, I could feel a sore throat coming on. And it got worse. Though for sure I had a sinus infection and figured I’d stay home from work and just rest, hoping it would work its way through. Silly me. When it didn’t look like I was getting any better, I went to the doctors on Thursday, tested negative for Covid, no fever, and no sinus infection. “You just have a simple cold.” I’m still calling bullshit because I’ve never had a simple cold where it felt like my head was in a vice constantly. Again, why I have trust issues with doctors.

I Love Being a Horror Fan!

Since I’m on the verge of hitting the big 60 next year and have been a horror film fan most of my life, watching as many different films as possible over those 6 decades, one would think that I’d be close to seeing everything, right! WRONG! Therein lies the beauty of the horror genre, or really cinema in general. If they stopped making movies today, we would still not be able to see all the films out there that we haven’t seen yet. And to prove this, is the latest stunning box set announced by Severin Films today, All Haunts be Ours: A Compendium of Folk Horror Vol. 2.

The first set was amazing enough, especially with the deep diving documentary Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched, that opened up the doors to so many films. And now, Severin has done it again with volume 2, that features 13 discs, with 24 international folk horror classics! As I mentioned, I’ve been in the game a long time and there were many of these titles that I was not familiar with at all. That is why I never get tired of the horror genre. There is always more to discover.

Dusk-To-Dawn Horrorfest at the Midway Drive-in!

The Midway Drive-in has announced 3 out of the 4 titles for this year’s Dusk-to-Dawn Horrorfest, and it’s going to be another great night! Celebrating the 40th anniversary of the movie that started it all for Freddy Krueger, with A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984). With this film, Wes Craven changed the game when it comes to the horror genre, for the 2nd time in his career, and wouldn’t be the last time either! Forget all the silly one-liners and comedic elements, the first is where we see Krueger the scariest! Come check it out and see why it is still as effective after all these years.

Mother’s Day (1980), Madman (1981), Pieces (1982), and Evil Dead Trap (1988)

When you’re talking about horror films with most non-horror fans, they usually are thinking about the slashers which they seem to encapsule all of that genre. But when us fans start to dig into that sub-genre, that’s when the questions arise, parameters seemed like they have to set, even though plenty of the films go out of their way to beyond said parameters. As if any were meant to stay between the lines!

Then you start to delve into when the sub-genre started, which can then start another round of questions and discussions.

To help get those arguments . . . we mean discussions started, in this episode we’re going to cover 4 different slasher films, granted, of varying types, but we feel still fits into the category of slasher films. And to help with this, we’ve invited Aaron Crowell, Managing Editor of HorrorHound Magazine back to join in the conversation.

Mystery Photo 8-19

That’s right, even though it’s my birthday, I’m still here working in the Krypt to bring you a new Mystery Photo! Which kind of explains why it’s so late getting posted! Oof…too much Indian food! But back to the task at hand! Our photo from last week was from the 1946 film The Catman of Paris, recently released in the Republic Pictures Horror Collection. Friday the 13th Marathon at the Music Box

Next month, on Friday the 13th, starting at noon, the Music Box Theatre will be holding a Friday the 13th marathon, screening the first 8 films, back-to-back! That even includes part 3 in 3-D!!! Doors open at 11am, and the first film starts at noon, going all the way until about 2am or so. There will be horror vendors, themed drinks in the lounge for the occasion, with trivia and prizes between each film! The price for all this madness is only $25! That’s a little over $3 per movie!

When I first heard about this event, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to be a vendor there or actually sit and watch all the films! But we’ll be at the HorrorHound Weekend in Cincinnati that weekend so we will not be able to attend in either capacity. But if you’re in town, and even the slightest Friday the 13th film, this is your chance to see the first 8 in the series on the big screen, like they were meant to be seen! Know Your Hammer?

While there are plenty of books out there on Hammer Studios, and trust me, I know since I probably have most of them, this multiple volume book series that Peveril Publishing has been putting out is a set that would probably answer many, if not all, of your Hammer question. The first 2 volumes of their series The House that Hammer Built have been released, volume 1 covers the years between 1934 to 1949, while volume 2 covers 1950 to 1954. And they have just released the cover for the 3rd volume, which will cover the years 1955 to 1959, which is when the studio really exploded all over the world with their remake of Dracula in 1957.

Mystery Photo 8-12

Welcome to another Monday, which means another Mystery Photo! Well, most of the time! Seems like our photo from last week got a little bit of attention of some people wanting to know what film it was actually from! Now you don’t have to wait any longer. It was from the 2019 film A Hole in the Ground, from director Lee Cronin, which would go on to direct Evil Dead Rise in 2023. If you like folk-horror, then I would suggest checking Hole out, as well as the newer film Starve Acre (2023), starring Matt Smith. Both great films. But kudos to Hoby Abernathy, Steve Archacki, and Christopher Dyer for sending in the correct answer.

DtH Episode 76: Al Adamson and Sam Sherman

Films discussed: Satan’s Sadists (1969), Brain of Blood (1970), Dracula vs. Frankenstein (1971)

From the mid-60’s until the late 70’s director Al Adamson and producer Sam Sherman made some of the most memorable low-budget horror and exploitation pictures to slide across American drive-in and grindhouse screens.  Together they made films that not only exemplified genre, they also often transcend and blended genres, creating something that has stuck in the filmgoing collective consciousness for over half a century.  And when Severin Films released The Al Adamson Masterpiece Collection boxed set in 2020, whole new generations were introduced to Al and Sam’s work, and those of us who were already familiar learned a thing or two (or twenty) and got to see them look better than they have since they sat on a double bill in a 70s sleaze palace.  

All hail Al and Sam!
