2023 Year End Review – Part 2: Best Viewings!

As always, it was a struggle getting my list down to ten films. It was even stranger because when I first started going through my list of movies I watched this year, at first, I thought I was going to have trouble even coming up with five titles. But the more I looked into them, the more I realized that not only did I have more than ten, but almost like last year, most of the films I have listed here came out in the last few years. I’ve only got two “old” ones and the rest from 2020 to 2023. I would like to say that it gives me hope for modern films, but really mainly if you look outside the country! Six of my films are from foreign countries, which does give me a LOT of hope of the horror genre as a whole.

Let’s get started, shall we? These are listed in alphabetical order to make it a little easier for me, since narrowing it down to ten was hard enough!

DtH Podcast – Episode 60: 2023 Wrap Up

Another year ending means another Wrap Up episode where we go over our top picks for the year, as well as discussing some other titles we’ve seen in 2023. While most of the films we do cover here as our favorite viewings for this year are from the last few years, they are not all from 2023. But as we’ve pointed out many times before, if you’re watching it for the first time, no matter when it was released, as far as we’re concerned, it still counts as a new movie to you!

2023 has been a great year for the horror genre, especially when you look outside the U.S., which we all hope everyone out there does, because there are some incredible titles coming from Spain, Malaysia, Argentina, Japan, and more. So hopefully our listeners are not restrained by films that are “only in English”, because those folks are sadly missing out on some incredible cinema.

For this episode, we strongly suggest you have a notepad and pen close by to jot down some titles because we think we’re going to give you more than a few that we feel you should be checking out.

New Film from Terrified Director

In February of 2022, I watched a film that blew me away so much, that I ended up watching 3 times within a couple of weeks. I first saw it on streaming service, then ordered the Blu-ray, watched it again when I got it, and then watched it a third time with my wife to see if she liked it as much as I did. That film was Terrified that came out in 2017. I was so impressed with it that it made my Best Viewings list for last year. It has been a very long time for a film to creep me out as much as this one did. And it was pretty damn original, and never even bothered with explaining what the hell was going on! Just loved it.

The writer / director is a guy named Demián Rugna and the news of his latest film, When Evil Lurks, is coming out this October. It will be in theaters starting October 6th, but then will be available for streaming on Shudder on October 27th. According to IMDB, the film is about “two brothers find a demon-infected man just about to give birth to evil itself. They decide to get rid of the man but merely succeed in helping him to deliver the inferno.”

I think one of the key things about Rugna that might be really helping him to be able to create these highly effective films, is working with Shudder. According to Rugna, “Working with Shudder has been an incredible and seamless experience. They allowed me the creative space to direct freely with the same goal in mind – identify new ways to shock and scare audiences with an innovative approach and a fresh story.”

I can’t tell you how much I’m looking forward to this!

2022 Year End Reviews – Part 2: Best Viewings

As always, my Best Of list isn’t just of films that came out this last year, but ones that were first time viewings for me, because when it comes down to it, whether it came out in 2022 or 1952, if it is the first time I’m watching it, then it is a new movie. So, my Best Of lists usually tend to have more older titles than newer ones, which might have something to do with the lack of originality in modern day productions. That being said, I was amazed to see how many newer titles ended up on my list this year, with 7 out of the 10 coming out within the last three years. That was a very nice surprise and gives me hope for the future of the horror genre. Now let’s get to this year’s Best Viewings list.

Movie Review: Terrified

It is not often that a film can have very little explanation of what is actually going on in the story, even once the final credits roll, and still be as effective as this one. For those who have not seen this yet, I will not mention any spoilers in this first part of my review, only because I feel it would be much better going into this completely blind. But there is so much I feel the need to comment on that in the second part I will go over some moments that I think are just amazing.
