Welcome to 2020, and to a whole new year of Mystery Photos! I really hope everyone enjoys these little pictorial puzzles we bring each Monday, or at least try to! I always say that my devious plan is to put these movie titles in your brain that way if you haven’t seen them, it may get you seek them out. Plus, if you have seen them, sometimes its a nice remembering of some great (and admittedly not so great sometimes) movies out there. So here’s hoping to another year of good suggestions for you.

Our photo from last week came from Finland and is called The White Reindeer. This came out in 1952. So it is pretty obvious from the photo, this fanged vampire film pre-dated both Hammer’s Horror of Dracula (1958) and Mexico’s El Vampiro (1957) by a few years. Don’t feel bad, but I just found that out myself! Just shows you that you can always learn something new about the genre, no matter how long you’ve been a fan. Welcome to the last Mystery Photo of 2019. This will be the 47th Photo we posted this year. Didn’t make it for a full 52 shots, but we were pretty close. Over the last decade, we’ve gone through 438 Mystery Photos. That is a lot of images that I’ve put in your brain. I also think it is some of these images that got me unfriended by some people, including my own family! I want to thank everyone that takes a peak at the photos I post, and to those that send in your guesses. I hope that those of you have haven’t seen the film the photo is posted from, once you learn what it is, that maybe you seek it out. That is, after all, my master plan! Hopefully it is working. But, as always, before we get to our last photo for the year, let’s review last week’s photo. It was a little easier but figured I’d throw you a bone for the holiday! It was from the 1974 film Madhouse, starring Vincent Price, Peter Cushing, and Robert Quarry. For a film that had a great cast, an interesting story, and some beautiful (and creepy) images, it is a shame the film isn’t better. Okay, let’s get to our very last photo for this decade. This is going to be a tough one. As in up until a few months ago, I had never even heard of this film, so if you don’t know it, don’t fee bad. But once we reveal the title, I would suggest everyone to see it, if only for their Horror History! Anyway, give it a peek and see what you can come up with. While there weren’t a ton of correct answers sent in for our last photo, we did get a few, which thrills me to no end! This is definitely a Turkey Day film and is a lot of fun as well. The film was re-titled a couple of times as Blood Waters of Dr. Z and Attack of the Swamp Creatures, but the original title was simply Z.A.A.T. (1971). Produced on a very low budget in Florida, this little monster movie never made it big, but is still fondly remembered by a some. I mean, how could you forget a movie about a half man/half catfish? It seems the photo from last week was a bit too tough. Fair enough. The pic is from the movie Frostbiten (2006) and is a fun little vampire flick that takes place in the snow covered Sweden. Since it is now December and some parts of the country are getting pelted with snow, I figured I’d throw in a season one… sort of. But before we get to the new photo, let’s go over last week’s photo. It was from the Spanish film Mientras duermes (2011), known here in the states as Sleep Tight. This is one disturbing film, my friends. In fact, after seeing actor Luis Tosar in this one, I’m not sure I can see him in another film without immediately not liking whatever character he might be playing! Welcome to Monday, once again! While not a lot sent in the correct answer for our last photo, I’m thrilled that some did. And now once I announce the title, I hope everyone seeks it out, because it definitely will be on my Best Of list this year. The film is Errementari: The Blacksmith and the Devil (2017), written and directed by Paul Urkijo Alijo. We stumbled across this earlier this year and since it was produced by Álex de la Iglesia, I knew that was a good enough reason to give it a chance and I wasn’t disappointed. It plays like a fairy tale, not like Disney, but one from Grimms, much darker and just damn cool!
