For the last several months, I’ve been honored to be part of the podcast Kicking the Seat, hosted by Ian Simmons, which he has been going through a bunch giallo films and discussing them with myself, as well as Dr. AC aka Aaron Christensen, and Bryan Martinez from The Giallo Room. The episodes are called Accademia Giallo and we’ve covered a wide range of titles from some familiar ones and some more obscure titles, so if you’re a fan, or want to learn more about this sub-genre, check these out.
Next Tuesday, December 7th, at Chicago’s Music Box Theatre, they will be screening Álex de la Iglesia’s 1995 film Day of the Beast with a Severin Films Pop-up Store set up in the lobby, where you can pick up the latest releases from them!
Day of the Beast is about a priest that discovers the exact date when the Anti-Christ will be born and sets about to stop it. Joining him on his quest is a death metal record store clerk and a cheesy TV psychic, as they do their damnedest to save the world from Satan and his offspring! Unlike anything you’ve seen before, this was de la Iglesia’s second film and is just a riot.
The screening starts at 7pm but the pop-up store will be open from 4pm to 7pm. Please note the Music Box is requiring all attending must show a valid photo ID as well as proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test. See the theater’s site for all the events details, by clicking HERE.
Chicago’s own 24-hour horror movie marathon, The Music Box of Horrors, is back! While there are restrictions to attending (see website for all the details before buying your ticket), they have announced the full lineup for this year’s event. They don’t have the official times listed, but here are the films scheduled to play:

Chicago’s Music Box Theatre has announced the date for their 24-hour marathon that makes it’s return from the grave! It will be taking place from noon on Saturday, Oct. 23rd to noon on Sunday, the 24th. So far they have announced 4 features:
Strait-Jacket (1964)
Tenebre (1982)
Arachnophobia (1990)
The Faculty (1998)
Tickets are on sale now, at $30 until the day of the event, then it will be $35. But before you buy your tickets, please read the below notice from the Music Box about the event:
“All 2021 Music Box of Horrors attendees entering the Music Box Theatre will need to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, or have proof of a negative PCR test within the past 72 hours. Proof will need to be shown at the door before entering. The COVID situation is ever-evolving and the above is our current plan to ensure the wellness of all who attend the Music Box of Horrors marathon. If any of this changes, we will alert all ticket buyers and update this webpage accordingly.”
This is a little short notice, but it was recently announced that Dario Argento’s immortal Suspiria (1977) will be screening at Chicago’s Music Box Theatre this weekend and next week. If you haven’t seen this film in the theater, then you haven’t really seen it. Seriously. This will be screened from a DCP format, which I’m guessing is the print from the Synapse recent Blu-Ray, so it is simply amazing.

We can all hope that things will be back to some sort of normality so us devious horror fans can enjoy another 24 hours of madness! I missed last year’s marathon because we were at an out-of-town show so this year we are hoping to make our return!
So far, they only have two titles announced, but I gotta say, they’ve picked to stellar movies! The first one is one of the last great pictures from the King of Ballyhoo, William Castle! Saint Maud, the debut film from writer/director Rose Glass will be opening at Chicago’s Music Box Theatre on April 3rd. We don’t much about it but it described as “a chilling and boldly original vision of faith, madness, and salvation in a fallen world.”
But they are having a Sneak Peak Preview on Wednesday, March 25th, at 7pm, featuring a post-film Q&A with the director Rose Glass. Unfortunately, this is for MBT Members only, but you can always sign up for a membership!
But in honor of the women working in the horror industry, the Music Box is having a Women in Horror Series. I’m not sure if there will be more features, but right now they have 2 other titles listed. On March 20th & 21st, they will be screening The Babadook, from writer/director Jennifer Kent. Then on March 27th and 28th, they will be screening Raw, from writer/director Julia Ducournau.
While I haven’t seen Saint Maud yet, I would highly recommend seeing The Babadook and Raw if you haven’t. Or even better, have a chance to see them in the theater! For more information about their Women in Horror Series, just click HERE. You can see the trailer for Saint Maude below.
Okay Chicago Horror fans… mark your calendar! June 4th through the 7th will be this year’s Cinepocalypse at the one and only Music Box Theatre! This was just announced yesterday, so there isn’t a lot of information yet, but now is the time to make sure you have that time free because I’m pretty sure they are going to have another amazing lineup for this year’s event.
I’ve been trying hit this film festival every year but something has always come up to stop me from making it more than a couple of nights, so I’m really hopefully that I can make it this year! Fingers crossed. You can check out the website HERE for more info, but we’ll be posting updates here as well. We’ve been going to the Music Box for close to 30 years and I was so thrilled with they started their own film fest. So Chicago area horror fans… let’s show our support!
I can remember being in a theater back in 1990 and watching a screening of Hardware, by a young filmmaker, who showed me a post-apocalyptical world like I hadn’t seen before. But also one filled with amazing colors and sounds. I was so excited to see what this guy was going to do next. Then two years later, he gave us Dust Devil (though it took a few years to see the full version of the film!). And then we get to the tragedy that was The Island of Dr. Moreau, where he was fired and replaced, after bringing that film from the very beginning. That was well documented in David Gregory’s Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley’s Island of Dr. Moreau (2014). Ever since then, besides some crictially acclaimed documentaries, he has never made a full lenght feature film since that debacle. Until now.
Next month, with the release of Color Out of Space, we’ll see the glorious return of Richard Stanley to feature films. Starring Nicholas Cage, Stanley has adapted the 1927 tale from H.P. Lovecraft, about a meteor from space that starts to… change things around where it landed. Continue reading
The Music Box of Horrors has unleashed its final lineup for this year’s 24-hour marathon. And as always, they have gathered together one hell of lineup with some amazing titles in there, as well as a couple of great guests. Director John Hancock will be on hand for a screening of his highly underrated film Let’s Scare Jessica to Death. Very creepy and a must see. They will also be screening Dog Soldiers, one of the best werewolf movies to come out in the last two decades, with director Neil Marshall in attendance!
Taking place on Saturday, Oct. 19th, starting at noon and running to noon on Sunday the 20th. As we mentioned before, this will be the very first Music Box marathon that we will be missing and it really bums me out. But I’m guarantying those that come out to this will have a great time, just like the previous years. Continue reading
