I know that that title is how I felt leaving the Midway Drive-in in the wee hours this morning. I’m going on about 3-4 hours of sleep as I write this, so I apologize for any typos or ramblings that don’t make much sense, but I wanted to get this posted. Yesterday, we were at the Midway Drive-in in Sterling, IL for their Dust to Dawn Romero Fest, where they screened George Romero’s zombie trilogy, Night of the Living Dead (1968), Dawn of the Dead (1978), Day of the Dead (1985), as well as The Crazies (1973) to round out the night. Honestly, I think The Crazies fits perfectly into that series since while they might not be zombies, the themes are pretty close and still very effective.

NotLD on the Big Screen in 35mm!
When is the last time you got to see George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead in a theater? From a 35mm print? Now when it the last time you got to see it on a 90-ft. screen? And on a drive-in that was around and running when this horror classic first opened way back in 1968? Then mark the date of May 18th on your calendar, because if you head out to the Midway Drive-in in Sterling, IL, not only will you be able to see the zombie film that started it all, in 35mm, but you’ll also get to see the two sequels, Dawn of the Dead (1978) and Day of the Dead (1985), and finally The Crazies (1973), of three of which are being screened from DCP.

On May 18th, at the Midway Drive-In, located in Sterling, IL, they are having a special tribute to George Romero’s by screening the first three films in his Dead trilogy, Night of the Living Dead (1968), Dawn of the Dead (1978), and Day of the Dead (1985). And as a bonus, after Day, they will be screening The Crazies (1978), which I have to say is a nice addition to these other nihilistic films.
If you’re not close to the Midway, skip down to the bottom!

This last Saturday, we ventured back to the Indianapolis area, twice in the last two weeks, for this year’s Super Monster Movie Fest at the Skyline Drive-In in Shelbyville, IN. Normally, we are there for both nights of fun, but due to some work issues, we couldn’t make it for the Friday night screenings, but did come out for Saturday. We got to see The Invisible Man (1933), John Carpenter’s The Thing (1982), 30 Days of Night (2007), Dead Snow (2009), and The Crawling Eye (1958).

I can’t remember how long it’s been, but ever since Mike and Mia Kerz took over the Midway Drive-In in Dixon, IL, and started doing these old-fashioned all night horror movie marathons, we’ve been there! And now that they’ve announced this year’s lineup, I know I am, as always, excited to do it all over again!
Taking place on September 16th, they will be screening the following features:
Child’s Play (1988)
The Return of the Living Dead (1985)
Slumber Party Massacre (1983)
Frankenhooker (1990)
Midway Drive-In Screams Halloween II
In case that title didn’t make sense, it was just me trying to be witty! But the Midway Drive-in will be screening two classic modern horror films next Saturday, July 15th, on their huge 90ft screen!
The original Scream (1996), the one that started the whole resurgence of horror films in the ’90s, will start approximately 8:45pm. Following it will be Halloween II (1981), the real sequel to Carpenter’s original classic feature. Okay, while some might not enjoy it, and yes, it pales in comparison to the original, but I’ve always been a fan of this and still think it is a fun horror flick. The Midway is screening these two films in a little pre-promotion of the upcoming Flashback Weekend convention, taking place in Rosemont, IL from Aug. 4th to the 6th. At the show, they will be having 4 guests from the original Scream, Skeet Ulrich, Rose McGowan, Jamie Kennedy, and Lee Waddell, and from Halloween II, they will have Dick Warlock, Lance Guest, Leo Rossi, and Alan Howarth. Not to mention reunions for Child’s Play 2, John Carpenter’s Christine, Terrifier 1 & 2, and many more amazing guests like Joe Bob Briggs & Darcy the Mail Girl! Alive and Kickin’
Sorry for the lack of updates, besides a few RIP notices, which are never fun to post. We were at Flashback convention last weekend, and it honestly took a few days to recover. We’ve been there since the very first show and haven’t missed one yet, and always have a great time and so glad to be there to help celebrate their 20th Anniversary show! Mike and Mia and all the Flashback crew make it look easier than it really is, with the staff being so nice and helpful.
It was great to see so many horror fans coming through the door all three days of the show. There was a time at most conventions when Sundays were just for a few stragglers wandering around, but they were still lining up to come in that last day. Always a good sign for vendors! But it really is the afterhours conversations that is the highlight for me at these conventions. Getting to talk about our favorite genre with other friends is so much fun and always a great time.

Any regular followers of the Krypt will know of my love of the drive-in theaters, which I’m always trying to promote them and preach the gospel of this great, nostalgic, and just a damn fun time. Plus, it is a way to keep the history (and the drive-in theaters) alive and well in a day and age where some would rather watch a movie on their phone. Blasphemy!!!
But now, the presented by The United Drive-In Theatre Owners Association (UDITOA), this new website, Authentic Drive-In Theatres (www.authenticdriveins.com) is here to help you find a drive-in theater, learn some history about drive-ins in general, as well as the latest news and updates.

Continue readingFlashback Weekend A Howling Success!
I just wanted to give a little bit of a shout out to Mike and Mia Kerz, and the whole Flashback Family, for giving us fans an incredible weekend. That was our first show in close to 2 years, which was just killing us not to be around our convention family and friends. But it did happen this last weekend, at the beautiful Hyatt Regency Hotel, and we had a blast.
I didn’t get a chance to take too many photos over the 3-day event mainly because we were so busy at our table! Never a bad thing. But we got to chat with plenty of fellow fans, sold a bunch of horror reference books, and got to hang out until the wee hours in the morning talking about the genre we love!
