Regular followers of the Krypt know not only my affection for the drive-ins and these horror marathons that are held there, like I recently posted about our trip to the Midway Drive-In a couple of weeks ago. But not only are there other drive-ins out there, but a lot of them are also doing very similar things by hosting special horror film screenings throughout the month of October. Not sure where a drive-in is around in your neck of the woods? Have no fear. Just head over to Drive-In Near Me (by clicking HERE) and you can search for theaters by state and links to their own website!

Horror & Fun at the Midway Drive-In!
I started writing this on very little sleep over the last 24 hours. Not for any bad reasons, but just choices we make in life. Sure, some of them might not be too smart, especially at my age, but it is one bad choice I will continue to make as long as I can. What is this poor choice that I am talking about? Going to the Dusk to Dawn Horrorfest at the Midway Drive-in last Saturday!

The final lineup has been announced for this year’s Dusk to Dawn Horrorfest at the Midway Drive-in, taking place on Sept. 20th. And what a lineup!
Re-Animator (1985)
Halloween 3: Season of the Witch (1982)
Shaun of the Dead (2004)
Bride of Re-Animator (1990)
Hot Time at the Carpenter Fest at the Midway

Over the weekend, we travelled out to Dixon, IL, once again, to the Midway Drive-in, for their John Carpenter Fest, where they screened The Thing (1982), Halloween (1978), Prince of Darkness (1987), and Assault on Precinct 13 (1976). We were one of the vendors set up outside for the event. Now, let’s just say that not only is the sun not my friend, but neither is the heat. But those are two things we had to deal with for most of the day. Getting there around 1pm to make sure we can unload everything and set up, such as our tent and all the merch, takes time. Doing it in those conditions makes it even more of a challenge, especially as I’m about to hit the big 60. In fact, standing there in the blazing heat was just brutal. And it makes one ponder why we even bother going through that misery.

That’s right . . . not only are there close to 300 drive-in theaters still up and running, but there are ones where the current owners have already retired or are going to be soon and are looking to sell it. It’s a lot of work, but when you love something as much as movies and keeping something this nostalgic alive, you never know.

The Midway Drive-in will be celebrating all things John Carpenter on their spring Dusk to Dawn show this June 28th! As of now, they only have announced 2 of the 4 features that will be screening, The Thing (1982) from a 35mm print (!!!) and Prince of Darkness (1987) from DCP. I know I’ve mentioned here on this site before, but my very first viewing of The Thing was at a drive-in theater, and I have seen in numerous more times since then at the drive-in, and it never has lost its charm. When you have a perfect movie like that one, it is always an experience. And even more so seeing it projected on a 90ft screen!

This last Saturday, we were at the Midway Drive-in, located in Dixon, IL, for their From Dusk-To-Dawn show, where they screened Wes Craven’s A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) from a 35mm print, then Don Coscarelli’s Phantasm (1979), Joe Dante’s Piranha (1978), and then ending the night (or morning) with Terror Train (1980). We’ve been coming to the Midway for well more than a decade, seeing so many incredible films there on their huge 90ft. screen. And yesterday was no different.

Well . . . hopefully. In case you were wondering why no updates or much of anything from me over the last week is that coming back from the amazing weekend at the Skyline Drive-in and their annual Super Monster Movie Fest, when I got up Monday morning, I could feel a sore throat coming on. And it got worse. Though for sure I had a sinus infection and figured I’d stay home from work and just rest, hoping it would work its way through. Silly me. When it didn’t look like I was getting any better, I went to the doctors on Thursday, tested negative for Covid, no fever, and no sinus infection. “You just have a simple cold.” I’m still calling bullshit because I’ve never had a simple cold where it felt like my head was in a vice constantly. Again, why I have trust issues with doctors.

The Midway Drive-in has announced 3 out of the 4 titles for this year’s Dusk-to-Dawn Horrorfest, and it’s going to be another great night! Celebrating the 40th anniversary of the movie that started it all for Freddy Krueger, with A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984). With this film, Wes Craven changed the game when it comes to the horror genre, for the 2nd time in his career, and wouldn’t be the last time either! Forget all the silly one-liners and comedic elements, the first is where we see Krueger the scariest! Come check it out and see why it is still as effective after all these years.

I know that that title is how I felt leaving the Midway Drive-in in the wee hours this morning. I’m going on about 3-4 hours of sleep as I write this, so I apologize for any typos or ramblings that don’t make much sense, but I wanted to get this posted. Yesterday, we were at the Midway Drive-in in Sterling, IL for their Dust to Dawn Romero Fest, where they screened George Romero’s zombie trilogy, Night of the Living Dead (1968), Dawn of the Dead (1978), Day of the Dead (1985), as well as The Crazies (1973) to round out the night. Honestly, I think The Crazies fits perfectly into that series since while they might not be zombies, the themes are pretty close and still very effective.
