Harker Press Unleashes a Nightmare Book

This is obviously a must for any fans of the Nightmare on Elm Street series, but I would just throw it out there that I have read and reviewed plenty of titles from Harker Press, some on a subject that I really had little interest in, such as the Halloween sequels, but still found them very fascinating and a lot of information I didn’t know. If you’re a horror fan, don’t just walk away because it’s a book on those “Freddy movies”. Trust me.

The other great thing about Harker Press’ releases is the price. You get a decent size book at a very reasonable price. New Edition to Never Sleep Again Book

We received an email from Dark Ink Publishing about their latest book, Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy, by Thommy Huston. As we’ve said many times before, you can never have too many horror reference books. But as it turns out, we already have this book in our library from when it first came out in 2016, which is pictures on the left below, with the new edition on the right. This new edition has a new afterwards by Robert England, but that’s about it.

Night of Fun and Horror at the Midway Drive-In

This last Saturday, we were at the Midway Drive-in, located in Dixon, IL, for their From Dusk-To-Dawn show, where they screened Wes Craven’s A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) from a 35mm print, then Don Coscarelli’s Phantasm (1979), Joe Dante’s Piranha (1978), and then ending the night (or morning) with Terror Train (1980). We’ve been coming to the Midway for well more than a decade, seeing so many incredible films there on their huge 90ft. screen. And yesterday was no different.

The Soul of Wes Craven

Out of all the directors that were reigning supreme in my formable years, the ‘80s, with names like Romero, Carpenter, Cronenberg, Hooper, Coscarelli, Wes Craven was never in my favorites. There were a few of his films that I still love to this day, such as A Nightmare on Elm Street, but for a career as a whole, he’s not high up in my list. But by reading this new book on him, it proved yet once again that by learning more about a subject, really going behind and deep into the person, you cannot help but see things differently. Doesn’t mean it changed my feelings towards some of his work, but it gives one so much more understanding on what you see.

There was a lot about Craven that I knew, such as him being a very intelligent man, that he used to be a teacher at one point, as well as wanting to break free from the genre that he was continually forced to work in. A younger me would state that he just used the genre to get his foot in the door, but never really was a fan. Once you read of his life, being raised in a very fundamental religious background, you realize he is never far away from true horror. And wanting to do something different from just that genre, that he was a very creative person who wanted to show that while he enjoyed working in scary tales, he also could show you something else.

Back from the Dead

Well . . . hopefully. In case you were wondering why no updates or much of anything from me over the last week is that coming back from the amazing weekend at the Skyline Drive-in and their annual Super Monster Movie Fest, when I got up Monday morning, I could feel a sore throat coming on. And it got worse. Though for sure I had a sinus infection and figured I’d stay home from work and just rest, hoping it would work its way through. Silly me. When it didn’t look like I was getting any better, I went to the doctors on Thursday, tested negative for Covid, no fever, and no sinus infection. “You just have a simple cold.” I’m still calling bullshit because I’ve never had a simple cold where it felt like my head was in a vice constantly. Again, why I have trust issues with doctors.

Dusk-To-Dawn Horrorfest at the Midway Drive-in!

The Midway Drive-in has announced 3 out of the 4 titles for this year’s Dusk-to-Dawn Horrorfest, and it’s going to be another great night! Celebrating the 40th anniversary of the movie that started it all for Freddy Krueger, with A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984). With this film, Wes Craven changed the game when it comes to the horror genre, for the 2nd time in his career, and wouldn’t be the last time either! Forget all the silly one-liners and comedic elements, the first is where we see Krueger the scariest! Come check it out and see why it is still as effective after all these years.

Double Dose of Horror at the Midway Drive-In

But have you seen it projected on a screen 90 feet across? Next month we head to Mars, PA, once again for the Monster Bash. Damn, do I just love this show. They have a great guest lineup this year, including Ricou Browning, the last living classic Universal monster!
