Episode 3 is now live! This time out, we talk about some more black and white horror films, digging a little deeper, hoping to bring some amazing titles to your attention to check out.
This time out, we’re discussing Jess Franco’s Diabolical Dr. Z (1966), Jacques Tourneur’s Night of the Demon (1957), and Kaneto Shindo’s Onibaba (1964). So take a little time to hear us rambling on some of fine cinema that we all feel are must see cinema!
Yes, we all know that we’ve only got 364 days left until Halloween, so we’ll just have to make the best of it, right! Plenty of time still to watch more horror movies! Now we can start pestering Satan Claws to give us some goodies for Axe-Mass, such as some new Blu-rays, or horror reference books, or any other goodies we didn’t pick up at the conventions this year. But let us not forget why we are here now … the Mystery Photo. Last week’s pick was from Frankenstein’s Daughter (1958), such a fun mess of a movie! How could we go through November and NOT have our mission be about the Turkey? This whole month should be a celebration of those cinematic shipwrecks, those films that reached for the stars, but didn’t quite make it off the ground. Granted, we don’t use the ” B ” word in describing these kind of movies because they (hopefully) are still entertaining. But I have a feeling some of you out there might be stumbling upon some titles that made be just plain … bad. But fear not, because as the saying goes, what doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger, right?

It has definitely been crazy these last few months here at the Krypt, especially this one. It seems I always end up so busy that it is hard to find time to celebrate and enjoy the holiday. But I did force myself to at least get in 31 movies this month. I’ve been a little laxed the last couple of months so I wanted to make sure I could at least average 1 a day during October.
But now that our convention season has come to an end, that part of our lives will slow down at least until March. Of course, that just means I need to get to work on all the other projects I’ve got brewing! Plenty more articles to write, books to read & review, and definitely more movies to watch! Plus, now that Halloween is over, that means the planning for this year’s Turkey Day Marathon needs to start! Still no details on if we’re going back to a live event or will continue to do it online, or both. Stay tuned for more details on that.
So from everyone here at the Krypt, we wish everyone out there a huge and Happy Halloween! Stay safe, be a little kinder to each others (especially people we don’t know), watch more horror movies, and definitely keep Discovering the Horror!
This last weekend, we made our return to the Monster Bash Conference in Mars, PA. It was their first convention since 2 years ago and we were thrilled to be back. We started attending this show back in 2015 and quickly fell in love with it. This really is like no other show that we attend. Not that we don’t have fun at the others, but the Bash is so much different. From the free cake on Saturday night, the insanity of the prize toss, to all the films they screen over the 3 days of the event, it really is a true classic horror film fan’s dream.
It seems that conventions are getting more attended by more of the casual fan than really true die-hard fans. They are there to get some over-priced autographs, maybe a new Halloween t-shirt, and that’s about it. 20 years ago (yeah, I know. Old Man Kitley ranting again!), just about every fan that came through the door were avid fans, anxiously waiting to pounce on the dealers room to find some new treasures to add to their ever-growing collection of movie memorabilia. They were always searching out new films, or old ones that they hadn’t seen before. And the guests at these shows were there to meet and greet their fans, not customers. They were just thrilled you knew who they were as well as being truly grateful that you enjoyed their work. But it seems those types of conventions are disappearing.

Just when I was content with not getting into collecting a lot of these horror action figures or collectible figures, I hear about some of these Hammer figures that Mego is now putting out. These are all 8″ figures that pre-orders are being taken now. The two they announced last week were for The Gorgon and The Mummy. Which, while they were not bad looking and only priced at $20 each, it didn’t make me change my mind on having to collect them.
I guess not too many people picked up on my little hint for the last photo. I mentioned that things aren’t always as black and white as they seem. The shot was from a film shown during a film. The movie is Gary Sherman’s 1981 film Dead & Buried, and shot I used was from a film that Jack Albertson is showing James Farentino. But kudos to Maureen Connelly and Kevin Hart for sending in the correct answer! Well done!
