Super-Horror-Rama at Sideshow Gelato!

The Super-Horror-Rama shows have now moved to the Sideshow Gelato for screenings on the last 3 Wednesday nights in July! Each of the films that will be shown do have some sort of connection to ice cream, even if it might be a little twisted!

Starting tomorrow, Wednesday, July 17th, they will be screening Don Coscarelli’s Phantasm (1979), where we have the all-time, coolest guitar-playing, dwarf-killing ice cream man around, the one and only Reggie Bannister! There is a reason this film is still regarded as a classic.

Music to Our (F)Ears Lecture

Next Tuesday, July 9th, from 6:30pm to 7:30pm, join two Rondo Award-winning authors, Aaron Christensen and me, at the Sulzer Regional Branch of the Chicago Public Library, for a new lecture on Horror Film soundtracks. From Psycho‘s shrieking strings to Halloween‘s creepy synths to The Omen‘s haunting choral chants, music in fright flicks can arguably be called the most effective special effect of all. We will explore the aural thrills and chills that have etched a permanent place in popular culture… and our nightmares.

Music Box of Horrors 2024!

This year’s Music Box of Horrors is taking place on Saturday, October 19th, giving fans another 24 hours of non-stop movies and madness! They have just announced first four titles that will be screening at this year’s marathon, and once again, they are starting out with some great titles.

The biggest title probably is Jaws (1975), which I know everyone has seen and probably multiple times. But how many times have you seen it on the big screen? With a packed audience?

The Dead Walk at the Midway Drive-in

I know that that title is how I felt leaving the Midway Drive-in in the wee hours this morning. I’m going on about 3-4 hours of sleep as I write this, so I apologize for any typos or ramblings that don’t make much sense, but I wanted to get this posted. Yesterday, we were at the Midway Drive-in in Sterling, IL for their Dust to Dawn Romero Fest, where they screened George Romero’s zombie trilogy, Night of the Living Dead (1968), Dawn of the Dead (1978), Day of the Dead (1985), as well as The Crazies (1973) to round out the night. Honestly, I think The Crazies fits perfectly into that series since while they might not be zombies, the themes are pretty close and still very effective.

Soavi Double Feature at Hollywood Blvd!

Midwest Gore Fest have teamed up with Severin Films for a Michele Soavi double feature at the Hollywood Blvd. Theater in Woodridge, IL, on May 25th!

They will be screening Dellamorte Dellamore (1994) and The Church (1989), with the first feature starting at 8pm. Tickets are only $15 so make your plans now! Just click HERE to purchase your tickets.

When is the last time you got to see George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead in a theater? From a 35mm print? Now when it the last time you got to see it on a 90-ft. screen? And on a drive-in that was around and running when this horror classic first opened way back in 1968? Then mark the date of May 18th on your calendar, because if you head out to the Midway Drive-in in Sterling, IL, not only will you be able to see the zombie film that started it all, in 35mm, but you’ll also get to see the two sequels, Dawn of the Dead (1978) and Day of the Dead (1985), and finally The Crazies (1973), of three of which are being screened from DCP.

Eco-Horror and Maximal Melt at Facets

This Friday and Saturday, at Facets in Chicago, they will be having a double and triple feature playing that is simply must-see. On Friday, they will be screening Godzilla vs the Smog Monster (1971) and Frogs (1972), both films trying to warn us about the dangers of the ecological damage we’re doing. Plus, they are just damn fun movies! We will actually have a small table in the lobby on Friday, and will have copies of my book, Discover the Horror, for sale as well as a few other book titles. Music Box Gives Us 24-Hours of Godzilla and More!

To celebrate 70 years of when Gojira first appeared on the big screen, the Music Box, along with the Japanese Arts Foundation, is pulling out all the stops, presenting multiple screening events, including a 24-hour marathon of the Showa-era films!!! Now, one my think you’d have to be crazy to spend that long of time sitting in a theater watching any series of movies. And you’d be correct. But those people with the puzzled look on their faces are the “normal ones” of the world and just don’t understand how amazing it would be to get to see 15 titles from the classic era, the one that I personally grew up with, all back-to-back. So, call me crazy, but I know on June 8th, I’ll be knee-deep in some of the greatest Godzilla films ever to be produced!

Romero Dead-Fest at the Midway Drive-In

On May 18th, at the Midway Drive-In, located in Sterling, IL, they are having a special tribute to George Romero’s by screening the first three films in his Dead trilogy, Night of the Living Dead (1968), Dawn of the Dead (1978), and Day of the Dead (1985). And as a bonus, after Day, they will be screening The Crazies (1978), which I have to say is a nice addition to these other nihilistic films.

Super Monster Movie Fest Lineup!

The Skyline Drive-in, in Shelbyville, IN, has announced their lineup for this year’s Super Monster Movie Fest and it’s one hell of a collection of Metal Monsters coming to invade! There is free camping and the one and only Sammy Terry live on stage each night! We’ve been making this an annual trip for us, staying the whole weekend and just having a great time. Whether you’re camping out at the drive-in, or crashing at one of the local hotels, there is plenty to do to keep you busy. There is plenty of tasty treats at the snack bar to keep that belly full and they usually have a bunch of vendors set up there as well, so bring some extra spending money.
