Thank the crazy movie-loving gods that Super-Horror-Rama is back and have found a brand-new home at The Music Box Theatre! Next month, they will be taking over Theater 2 for two screenings of Mall Madness, with a Friday night screening of Chopping Mall (1986) and then on Saturday, they will be screening Phantom of the Mall: Eric’s Revenge (1989).

January Giallo at the Music Box
That’s right folks, since the end of the year is coming, that means that January Giallo at the Music Box Theatre in Chicago is right around the corner! They have announced the 4 titles that will be screening this year, and they are not to be missed.
While the first film isn’t technically the one to start the sub-genre of the giallo, it definitely helped define it. Mario Bava’s Blood and Black Lace is an incredible piece of cinema, if only for the use of colors and camerawork here. Talk about a master class! It is one that no matter how many times you might have seen it; each time still makes you sit and be amazed at how incredible it looks. If you can’t tell, I’m a big fan of this one and can’t wait to see it on the big screen again!
Continue readingBill Moseley at the Music Box
Mark your calendars for two nights of Bill Moseley at the Music Box with screenings of two different features, Tobe Hooper’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986) and Rob Zombie’s House of a 1000 Corpses (2003), with Moseley appearing both nights for a Meet & Greet and a Q&A after each film, brought to you by Chicago’s own Music Box and The Horror House!
Texas 2 will be screening on Feb. 4th, at 7pm in DCP format, while House will be screening on Feb. 5th at 7pm, from a 35mm print. Moseley will be there at 6pm to meet with fans. If you never had the chance to see these cult films on the big screen, now is your chance!
Last of Terror Tuesdays
A few years ago, Aaron Christensen and I started hosting these little lectures at the Sultzer Region Library in Chicago that we called Terror Tuesdays. The 1-night lecture then turned into a 4-week series, which we’ve been doing for a few years now. While it is a bit of prep work ahead of time, it’s a lot of fun and we’ve built up a good audience over those years.
Continue readingFrancomania: Vampyros Francos
My first official day of vacation was on Friday, Oct. 25th, and I headed down to St. Louis to witness something truly special, that probably has never happened before. And that was to watch some Jess Franco films in a theater . . . that once was an actual church! How could one pass that up!?!? Just thinking what Franco might have thought about these screenings and where, makes me smile.
My friend and Discover the Horror podcast co-host, Aaron AuBuchon, and Webster University, along with Severin Films, and Oscarbate Film Collective (John Dickson & Will Morris), hosted a 3-day event called Francomania: Vampyros Francos at the Webster University Film Series, where they would screen three different films from Spanish director Jess Franco, all dealing with the subject of vampires: Count Dracula (1970), Vampyros Lesbos (1971), and Dracula, Prisoner of Frankenstein (1972). There was another screening of Franco’s Mucuba Sexual at this cool little place called The Arkadin, which looks like they screen all sorts of cool titles there.
Continue readingSuper-Horror-Rama Flips the Bird
Next month, Super-Horror-Rama returns to Sideshow Gelato for another round of films that truly celebrate the Turkey. Not the one you eat, but the one you watch!
Each Thursday in November (except the 28th for obvious reasons), they will be screening a very special “bird” movie. On the 7th, it is the ultimate giant turkey movie, The Giant Claw (1957). Starring Jeff Morrow and Mara Corday, they have to do battle with a creature “as big as a battleship” and flying so fast that it doesn’t show up on radar. While everyone in the film is playing it completely straight, it might be due to the fact that they never saw the title creature until the film was released. But as cheesy as the creature is, the film is still a lot of fun.
Continue readingMusic Box of Horrors 2024
This weekend, we’ll be heading back into Chicago for this year’s 24-hours of insanity, known as the Music Box of Horrors. This annual event is one that I look forward to every year and it just keeps getting better and better, as well as more popular than ever. The fact that this year’s marathon sold out before maybe even half of the titles had been announced is just insane! That tells me that the Music Box programmers have not only continued to have a solid lineup each and every year, but that they’ve built up the trust of the fans that will buy their tickets right away, not knowing or caring what the lineup is going to be, because they know it will be worth it. This year is no different.
Of course, we will be set up there in the lounge, pimping our usual wares of horror reference books, urging fans to dive deeper into this wonderful film genre that we all love. Might have some new and interesting titles for you to peruse so make sure you stop by our table and check it out. Or, just to say hello and chat. We love nothing more than talking about horror films!
Continue readingTerror Tuesdays at the Sulzer Library!
Thank you to those that came out to our first entry into this year’s Terror Tuesdays at the Sulzer Regional Library. It was a lot of fun, but that’s just the beginning! Next Tuesday, October 15th, Aaron Christensen and I will continue our weekly lectures on the horror genre, with this month’s subject being Women in Horror. For this week’s lecture, we focus on Women Directors that have worked in the horror genre.
Continue readingLibrary Lectures on Horror History
Since it’s now October, that means that Aaron Christensen and I will be doing our annual Terror Tuesday lectures at the Sulzer Regional Library! The first lecture is next Tuesday, Oct. 8th, starting at 6:30pm. The series this year will all be focusing on Women in Horror, with the first lecture on the Queens of Screams, where we will go over some of the talented faces that we’ve seen over the years in our favorite horror films, from Fay Wray to Bette Davis to Jamie Lee Curtis to Linnea Quigley, and many more.
Continue readingNight of Fun and Horror at the Midway Drive-In
This last Saturday, we were at the Midway Drive-in, located in Dixon, IL, for their From Dusk-To-Dawn show, where they screened Wes Craven’s A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) from a 35mm print, then Don Coscarelli’s Phantasm (1979), Joe Dante’s Piranha (1978), and then ending the night (or morning) with Terror Train (1980). We’ve been coming to the Midway for well more than a decade, seeing so many incredible films there on their huge 90ft. screen. And yesterday was no different.
