When talking about an important title in any film genre, the word “classic” is probably used more times that it really deserves. I’m probably just as guilty as the next guy on that. But this is definitely not one of those times. When you’re talking about a film that gave birth to a whole new sub-genre of horror films, or one that makes an impact on viewers now just as it did over five decades before, then it really does deserve the moniker of a “classic”. We normally do 8 or 9 conventions, or some other event like a 24-hour marathon, throughout the year. Of course, with all the current events, those have all been cancelled or rescheduled to next year, or at least they have so far. We’ll see how the rest of the year plays out, but I’m honestly not expecting much. So when the Midway Drive-In announced they were going to have a 2-day event, with Evil Dead star Bruce Campbell appearing both days, screening the Evil Dead trilogy, along with two other features, as well as having some vendors there, we knew we had to be part of that. Friday, July 10th, they would be screening Evil Dead 2 (1987) and then Army of Darkness (1993). On Saturday the 11th, they would be screening Evil Dead (1981) with a 4K restoration with new sound mix and score by original composer Joseph LoDuca, The Beyond (1981), and finally I Drink Your Blood (1970). Not only would there be horror vendors and raffles, but Mr. Campbell would doing a Q&A before the features. It would also be a chance for fans to have some sort of a convention or event to head out to and have fun. And that is exactly what happened. Continue reading
Are you anxious to get out of the house and see some classic horror films in the theater? Wait? Indoor theaters not open yet? No worries. Now is your chance to still go to the theater and see some classic horror films on the big screen, all from the comfort of your own car!
Oh yeah… Did I mention that Bruce Campbell will be there as well.
On July 10th & 11th, the Midway Drive-In in Dixon, IL, will be hosting the one and only Bruce Campbell for two nights of fright films that we all love. Now this isn’t the usual event at the Midway, so you’ll need to head over to the Flashback Weekend site (just click HERE) for all the ticket information, as well as the latest information about the event.
Also, because of Covid-19, there are new rules that MUST be followed. Click HERE for those rules and policies. Remember folks, this is about keeping everyone safe, from you and your family, to everyone else coming out to enjoy the evening. Chicago’s own Music Box Theatre has announced the date for this year’s Music Box of Horrors, which will take place on Saturday, October 24th, starting at noon! We can all hope that things will be back to some sort of normality so us devious horror fans can enjoy another 24 hours of madness! I missed last year’s marathon because we were at an out-of-town show so this year we are hoping to make our return!
So far, they only have two titles announced, but I gotta say, they’ve picked to stellar movies! The first one is one of the last great pictures from the King of Ballyhoo, William Castle! Joining forces with Joan Crawford, we get Strait-Jacket (1964), with this twisted tale of axe-murderer on the loose. Screening from a 35mm print! Continue reading
In 1981, director / writer / actor Noel Marshall made a film called Roar that is like no other film you’ve seen. And then when you learn the story of what really happened on the set, it is even more shocking and amazing that anybody survived. Tippi Hedren (who was married to Marshall), and her kids, including Melanie Griffith, all appear in the film about a guy who lives with a bunch of wild animals. Seems pretty simple, except they really were wild animals. Several of the cast and crew were injured, some pretty severe from these beasts. Continue reading
Saint Maud, the debut film from writer/director Rose Glass will be opening at Chicago’s Music Box Theatre on April 3rd. We don’t much about it but it described as “a chilling and boldly original vision of faith, madness, and salvation in a fallen world.”
But they are having a Sneak Peak Preview on Wednesday, March 25th, at 7pm, featuring a post-film Q&A with the director Rose Glass. Unfortunately, this is for MBT Members only, but you can always sign up for a membership!
But in honor of the women working in the horror industry, the Music Box is having a Women in Horror Series. I’m not sure if there will be more features, but right now they have 2 other titles listed. On March 20th & 21st, they will be screening The Babadook, from writer/director Jennifer Kent. Then on March 27th and 28th, they will be screening Raw, from writer/director Julia Ducournau.
While I haven’t seen Saint Maud yet, I would highly recommend seeing The Babadook and Raw if you haven’t. Or even better, have a chance to see them in the theater! For more information about their Women in Horror Series, just click HERE. You can see the trailer for Saint Maude below.
