This year’s Super Monster Movie Fest at the Skyline Drive-In, in Shelbyville, IN, is having an all bugs themed movie marathon! Taking place on August 28th and 29th, you’ll get to see older classics along with some more modern day ones, all dealing with giant bugs! Here’s the complete lineup:Continue reading →
Chicago’s own Music Box Theatre has announced the date for this year’s Music Box of Horrors, which will take place on Saturday, October 24th, starting at noon! We can all hope that things will be back to some sort of normality so us devious horror fans can enjoy another 24 hours of madness! I missed last year’s marathon because we were at an out-of-town show so this year we are hoping to make our return!
So far, they only have two titles announced, but I gotta say, they’ve picked to stellar movies! The first one is one of the last great pictures from the King of Ballyhoo, William Castle! Joining forces with Joan Crawford, we get Strait-Jacket (1964), with this twisted tale of axe-murderer on the loose. Screening from a 35mm print!Continue reading →
In 1981, director / writer / actor Noel Marshall made a film called Roar that is like no other film you’ve seen. And then when you learn the story of what really happened on the set, it is even more shocking and amazing that anybody survived. Tippi Hedren (who was married to Marshall), and her kids, including Melanie Griffith, all appear in the film about a guy who lives with a bunch of wild animals. Seems pretty simple, except they really were wild animals. Several of the cast and crew were injured, some pretty severe from these beasts. Continue reading →
Saint Maud, the debut film from writer/director Rose Glass will be opening at Chicago’s Music Box Theatre on April 3rd. We don’t much about it but it described as “a chilling and boldly original vision of faith, madness, and salvation in a fallen world.”
But they are having a Sneak Peak Preview on Wednesday, March 25th, at 7pm, featuring a post-film Q&A with the director Rose Glass. Unfortunately, this is for MBT Members only, but you can always sign up for a membership!
But in honor of the women working in the horror industry, the Music Box is having a Women in Horror Series. I’m not sure if there will be more features, but right now they have 2 other titles listed. On March 20th & 21st, they will be screening The Babadook, from writer/director Jennifer Kent. Then on March 27th and 28th, they will be screening Raw, from writer/director Julia Ducournau.
While I haven’t seen Saint Maud yet, I would highly recommend seeing The Babadook and Raw if you haven’t. Or even better, have a chance to see them in the theater! For more information about their Women in Horror Series, just click HERE. You can see the trailer for Saint Maude below.
Okay, so while there is still snow on the ground and the temps are below freezing, maybe it might be a little early to be hitting the drive-ins. BUT… it is a great time to start making plans to attend them, especially when there are already all night horror shows scheduled.Continue reading →
No? Well if you’re in the Chicago area at the end of March, then now is your chance to learn. The Chicago Cinema Society and Chicago Filmmakers are hosting a event to help you learn more about this sub-genre of films, that have given us everything from crying women, el Santo, vampiros Aztec mummies, Satanists, and so much more. On March 28th from 7pm to 10pm, Mexico’s Morbido Film Festival’s head programmer, Abraham Castillo Flores will be presenting the Morbido Crypt’s Guide to Mexican Fantasy and Horror Cinema. Okay Chicago Horror fans… mark your calendar! June 4th through the 7th will be this year’s Cinepocalypse at the one and only Music Box Theatre! This was just announced yesterday, so there isn’t a lot of information yet, but now is the time to make sure you have that time free because I’m pretty sure they are going to have another amazing lineup for this year’s event.
I’ve been trying hit this film festival every year but something has always come up to stop me from making it more than a couple of nights, so I’m really hopefully that I can make it this year! Fingers crossed. You can check out the website HEREfor more info, but we’ll be posting updates here as well. We’ve been going to the Music Box for close to 30 years and I was so thrilled with they started their own film fest. So Chicago area horror fans… let’s show our support!
I can remember being in a theater back in 1990 and watching a screening of Hardware, by a young filmmaker, who showed me a post-apocalyptical world like I hadn’t seen before. But also one filled with amazing colors and sounds. I was so excited to see what this guy was going to do next. Then two years later, he gave us Dust Devil (though it took a few years to see the full version of the film!). And then we get to the tragedy that was The Island of Dr. Moreau, where he was fired and replaced, after bringing that film from the very beginning. That was well documented in David Gregory’s Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley’s Island of Dr. Moreau (2014). Ever since then, besides some crictially acclaimed documentaries, he has never made a full lenght feature film since that debacle. Until now.
Next month, with the release of Color Out of Space, we’ll see the glorious return of Richard Stanley to feature films. Starring Nicholas Cage, Stanley has adapted the 1927 tale from H.P. Lovecraft, about a meteor from space that starts to… change things around where it landed.Continue reading →
Now that Halloween season is official over, the next thing on calendar for us is of course, Turkey Day. No, I’m not talking about Thanksgiving, but our annual Turkey Day Marathon. Trust me, after getting through some of the titles we’ve watched over the years, just surviving is thankful enough! In all honestly, what I’m really thankful for is that I have a group of friends that make the trek out here every Black Friday to celebrate these Cinematic Shipwrecks along with me, and we have a lot of fun doing it.Continue reading →
Sure this is close to a year away, but no reason why you can’t start planning out events for next year, right? Creepy Classics and Monster Bash have scheduled their next film fest, this time featuring the work of Bela Lugosi! Taking place on Aug. 14th & 15th at the Palace Theatre in Canton, Ohio, they will have 2 days of Lugosi films! Below is the schedule:Continue reading →
