Horror History: Javier Botet

JavierBotetJavier Botet
Born July 30th, 1977

Botet is the Spanish version of Doug Jones. When we see him in a movie, we might not recognize him since he is underneath makeup that is hiding his true face. Being very tall and extremely thin, and being able to contort his body in unusual ways, it makes him perfect for creature roles, such as the old skinny lady in Jaume Balagueró’s [REC] films. The reason for Botet’s physical condition is Marfan syndrome which causes the person to be very tall and then, and seemingly long extending arms and fingers.

His first screen appearance was that of a humanoid in Brian Yuzna’s Beneath Still Waters (2005). Not only appearing in the [REC] films, but he also has been in two of Álex de la Iglesia’s recent films, Last Circus and Witching and Bitching. But not just appearing in Spanish films, he appeared as the title character in the 2013 film Mama. Unfortunately, most of his work was covered with CGI. There is some test footage that was used of him playing the character without any CGI and it is a hell of a lot more creepier than the final product. Once again proving that a real actor in makeup can be more effective than a cartoon. Especially when they are being preformed by a talented artist like Botet. You can check out that footage HERE.

More recently, he has appeared in films like Crimson Peak (2015), The Other Side of the Door, and as the Crooked Man in The Conjuring 2 (both 2016), and is rumored to be playing the Mummy in Universal’s latest remake.

Happy 4th Everyone! Hope everyone is getting to enjoy this holiday…at least here in the states. But even though it is a holiday, we’re still hard at work here at the Krypt, bringing you this week’s Mystery Photo. But before we get to this week’s photo, let us go over last week’s pic. No, it wasn’t from Lost Boys, but from Hammer’s Dracula A.D. 1972. Must have really confused a lot of you out there since we only got three correct answers sent in They were from Aaron Christense, Doug Lamoreux & David Voigt. So kudos out to you.

Okay…lets get to our photo for today. This one might be a bit tougher…trying to keep those brains going out there….keeping you on your toes, as it were. Take a peek and see what you can come up with. Might not be too hard since it might be easy to pick out that little monster….but we’ll see.

Please remember not to post your answer here, but drop us a line at jon@kitleyskrypt.com. As always…good luck.

Turkey Day in May 2016

Not sure what happend to make me get this report posted, but here it is, better late than never. In was in May of last year when we started to have our 2nd Turkey Day event, appropriately called Turkey Day in May. Basically we realized that there was just too much turkey for a single event. So Turkey Day in May began. And this last May, we continue that tradition, with a fine gathering of like-minded (sometimes called crazy) film enthusiasts to test our will and spirits against some of cinemas lesser quality films. But, while some of these films might not rate high on anybody’s grading system, we were all entertained by these titles. So while some of these might not be too high on anyone’s grading scale, we had a lot of fun with it.

Romero Gets A Star

Romero.jpgIt was announced today that George Romero would be getting one of those illustrious stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. And all I can say is it’s about damn time. For a man who pretty much invented the modern day zombie, created so many films that gave millions of us the chills, and more than a few nightmares, it’s nice to see him get a little bit of credit for his work.

My very first horror convention that I attended was at a Fangoria Weekend of Horrors in LA in 1988. I had never seen or met anyone famous before so one of the first ones that I see there, just standing outside the dealer room, was the one and only Romero. I pulled out my copy of Tom Savini’s Grand Illusions and asked him to sign it since he wrote the forward to it, which he graciously did with a huge smile. That was my very first autograph. And I still have that copy of the book.

Mystery Photo 6-27

Happy Monday Everybody! Sorry to say but our last photo seemed to be quite a tough one. Honestly, I was surprised that I didn’t get any guesses of Happy Birthday to Me for this one, but it would have been incorrect. It is in fact from the 1981 film called And When She Was Bad, but also known as simply Madhouse. Twisted little movie that is worth your time. The only two that sent in the correct answer were Hoby Abernathy and Kuba Haczek, so congrats out to them.

So this week we’re going to go with something similiar to last week. And by that I mean that at first glance you might think this is from a certain movie, but you need to look closer. But it should be a much easier one than the last few weeks. But we’ll see, won’t we?

Please remember not to post your answers here, but send them in an email to jon@kitleyskrypt.com. Good Luck!
