“For the first time in motion picture history…” was a line that director William Castle used quite often to promote his new movie, that usually came with a gimmick. Whether it was Percepto, Emergo, or Illusion-O, Castle made not only pretty entertaining pictures but made going to see one of his film an event. While he didn’t create ballyhoo, he damn near perfected it when it came to his films. This August, as Chicago’s Music Box Theatre, you’ll be able to experience 5 of his features, most of which from 35mm. See below for the schedule and start making your plans.
Strait-Jacket (1964) – Starring Joan Crawford, Diane Baker, and George Kennedy
Screening on Friday, Aug. 21st
House on Haunted Hill (1959) – Starring Vincent Price and Carol Ohmart, who throw a nice little party… at a haunted house
Screening on Friday, Aug. 21st and Thursday, Aug. 27th
The Tingler (1959) – Once again, starring Vincent Price as he discovers a creature that is created when you’re frightened that will kill you… unless you SCREAM!
Screening on Saturday, Aug. 22nd and Tuesday, August 25th.
13 Ghosts (1960) – A family inherits a house that is haunted by the title characters! Hopefully they will be distributing the special Ghost Viewers for this event.
Screening on Monday, Aug. 24th
Mr. Sardonicus (1961) – My personal favorite of Castle’s films, starring Guy Rolfe in the title role as a sadistic baron with a twisted face. Also starring Ronald Lewis and Audrey Dalton.
Screening on Sunday, Aug. 23rd and Wednesday, Aug. 26th.
