That’s right folks, the Midway Drive-In is doing it again, holding a Dusk-to-Dawn event screening 4 different films from John Carpenter!!! And unless you’re wearing your special sunglasses, you’re going to need to come to this event, buy some popcorn, corn dogs, and cheeseburgers, and spend money on the vendors. OBEY! CONSUME! All of this takes place on Saturday, May 16th. The doors open at 5pm with the pre-show starting at 8pm, so make sure you get there early to not only get a good spot, but also to enjoy a wonderful night at the drive-in!
For those that get there early, we’ll be handing out free sunglasses to the first 100 people in line to get in! Now, we’re not saying that you need to wear these glasses to see what is really going on, but one never knows…. Right before the gates open, we will be out there passing the sunglasses and maybe even some eye patches (in case you’re more Snake Plissken fan than Roddy Piper!) to those in line until supplies last. In other words, make sure you get there early!
First of all, I’ve always said there’s nothing like seeing an all-night horror show at a drive-in theater. Then add that it is 4 titles from the Master of Horror John Carpenter, then add to the fact that these titles will be screened on a 90ft screen!?!?! You want more? How about the amazing array of tasty treats at the concession stand that is open through all the features. AND… there will be some horror vendors there to offer up their wares to make the event even more fun! You have plenty of chances to add to your horror collection from Time Warp Collectibles, grab a shirt or hoodie from LIX, some amazing releases from Severin Films, or even maybe a book or two, or even a pillow or tote bag from us at Kitley’s Krypt. For all of the info, head over to their website HERE.
The first feature, screening from a 35mm print, is They Live, Carpenter’s take on the future, which seems not too far off, other than the aliens. Or is it? With consumerism and distractions galore, all to keep society not thinking about what might be really going on right in front of them. Starring Roddy Piper, Keith David, Meg Foster, Peter Jason, and George ‘Buck’ Flowers, featuring another incredible score by Carpenter, this is one not to be missed.
The next feature is one of my favorites of Carpenter, and one of the best ghost story movies ever made! It is The Fog (1980), starring Adrienne Barbeau, Jamie Lee Curtis, Janet Leigh, Tom Atkins, Charles Cyphers, Nancy Loomis, and once again, George ‘Buck’ Flowers! On the 100-year anniversary of the founding of the little seaside town of Antonio Bay, a strange fog makes its way into town, bringing something old and deadly with it.
The third feature is Escape from New York (1991), starring Kurt Russell as the immortal Snake Plissken! Add in Ernest Borgnine, Tom Atkins, Lee Van Cleef, Adrienne Barbeau, Henry Dean Stanton, Donald Pleasence, and Issac Hayes, and you have one hell of a cast filling out this amazing action film. It always amazes me how good this film looks with such a low budget, and one that I feel still holds up.
The last feature is one of the best H.P. Lovecraft stories, that isn’t actually based on a Lovecraft tale. But between Carpenter, writer Michael De Luca, and the creative geniuses of K.N.B., they created a feature film that really oozes and seeps of what H.P. Lovecraft was about. Starring Sam Neill, Julie Carmen, Jürgen Prochnow, John Glover, David Warner, Bernie Casey, Peter Jason, and even Charlton Heston, all wanting to know… Do you read Sutter Cane?
