1000 Women in Horror Documentary

Back in 2020, I reviewed the book 1000 Women in Horror by Alexandra Heller-Nicholas, which I recommended highly then, and I still do. If you want, you can read our review by clicking HERE.

It really shows the amazing amount of work out there, from the very beginning of cinema to modern day work, that is being created by women. From writing, directing, actresses, makeup effects work, and everything in between. Just name the profession, and there’s women doing it. Back in the early days, especially when the studio system started to take over, it was pretty tough to be taken seriously. Thankfully today it’s a little easier, though I think we can still make even more progress.

Just do a search for how many horror films were directed by women in the last 10 years and you’ll be amazed. Especially since quite a few of them are really well done!

And to show that, this incredible book is now a new documentary, using the same title, that will make its debut on Shudder on March 20th! I guarantee that you will not only learn something new but will probably be amazed at some of what you do learn. Abraham’s Boys

We all know the heroic stories of Professor Van Helsing, or Doctor in some films, always doing battle against the undead, saving the world from vampires. In this new film by director Natasha Kermani, which she adapted based on the short story by Joe Hill, we get to see a little more in depth look at the Van Helsing family, and more important, how they were raised by this “hero”.

Starring Titus Welliver as the Van Heling patriarch, who is forever on the lookout for not only other vampires, but perhaps the return of his greatest foe. And in that process, “trains” his sons to carry on this tradition, though one of them is more than a little reluctant to even believe these stories are real.

I am very intrigued on this new take on a very famous character from the world of horror, and how writer Hill came up with this unique twist, and how Kermani has adapted it for the screen. This new film hits theaters on July 11th. Below is the trailer.

New Film from Terrified Director

In February of 2022, I watched a film that blew me away so much, that I ended up watching 3 times within a couple of weeks. I first saw it on streaming service, then ordered the Blu-ray, watched it again when I got it, and then watched it a third time with my wife to see if she liked it as much as I did. That film was Terrified that came out in 2017. I was so impressed with it that it made my Best Viewings list for last year. It has been a very long time for a film to creep me out as much as this one did. And it was pretty damn original, and never even bothered with explaining what the hell was going on! Just loved it.

The writer / director is a guy named Demián Rugna and the news of his latest film, When Evil Lurks, is coming out this October. It will be in theaters starting October 6th, but then will be available for streaming on Shudder on October 27th. According to IMDB, the film is about “two brothers find a demon-infected man just about to give birth to evil itself. They decide to get rid of the man but merely succeed in helping him to deliver the inferno.”

I think one of the key things about Rugna that might be really helping him to be able to create these highly effective films, is working with Shudder. According to Rugna, “Working with Shudder has been an incredible and seamless experience. They allowed me the creative space to direct freely with the same goal in mind – identify new ways to shock and scare audiences with an innovative approach and a fresh story.”
