Books, Books, and More Books!

I’m not sure what worries me more, the fact that I’m going to run out of room for all these books I want to add to my library, or just how the hell am I going to pay for all of them! I know I’ve stated before that if they stopped making movies now, I still wouldn’t be able to see them all before I’m gone. It’s really same for these books. With each movie offering you something we haven’t seen or experienced before, these volumes below, as well as so many more, are just waiting for you to read and absorb the knowledge within, which then in turn is going to help you see those films in a different light. It really is a never-ending path, and one I intend to continue to travel down as long as I can!

We have new books, updated and revised volumes, covering classic British horror films, horror in the USA, Lewton horrors of the ’40s, and much more. Take a look below and start that Want List or add to the one you’ve already started!

Bride of a Vault of Horror – Back in 2004, author Keith Topping gave us A Vault of Horror: A Book of 80 Great British Horror Movies from 1956-1974, which we reviewed HERE, and had a lot of fun with it. Then in 2024, he published a sequel, Return to the Vault of Horror, giving us reviews of another 58 titles of British horror films, following the same format and fun. Then last year, he switched to Science Fiction to give us Island of Terror (A Guide to 60 Great British SF and Fantasy Movies From 1936 – 1984). One would think that Topper has really kept himself busy, but apparently not. Because now we get Bride of a Vault of Horror: A Book of 72 Great British Films of Mystery and Suspense from 1933-1986! Taking a little different direction on the sub-genre but still covering plenty of horror titles and more here. Within the 600+ pages, this volume covers titles such as The Ghoul, Hell is a City, The Flesh and the Fiends, Curse of the Mummy’s Tomb, The Shuttered Room, and many more.

This is coming from Telos Publishing at the end of October, priced at £24.99 or $33.40. You can head over to their website by clicking HERE.

New Books from McFarland

Even though money is tighter and tighter these days, it doesn’t stop me from adding more books to my want list for the Kryptic Library. Browsing through McFarland’s website, I found 4 titles that I will need to add at some point.

I’ve been a fan of director Jim Mickle ever since I saw his first feature film, Mulberry St. (2006), but then even more so with his follow up, Stake Land (2010). He’s only worked on 5 feature films and a couple of series, but I’ve really enjoyed everything I’ve seen. Now coming later this year, is Jim Mickle’s World: Critical Commentary and Interviews on the Films and Television Series by Ernie Rockelman, priced at $39.95. I know Ernie from his Rondo Award winning work in HorrorHound Magazine so it’s great to see friends continuing to contribute to everyone’s horror education! I can’t wait add this to my library, dig into the book, which I know in turn will want me to revisit Mickel’s films.

Books, Books, and More Books!

In case you weren’t aware of it, I’m kind of a book collector. And by that, I mean I collect horror reference books, or books that discuss or cover the horror film genre, from film guides, biographies, deep dives into different sub-genres, and even those titles that I call psycho-babble. I love them all. Maybe because I’m more old school and books are where I first learned about movies, way before the internet was a thing. I know I’ve said this probably a few times here over the years, but I think it is worth mentioning again, possibly for new readers, or just to remind regulars on how important I feel it is to learn more about the genre.

Because this horror film genre is so huge, going on almost 130 years, there are more films already made then we’ll ever get to see in one’s lifetime. Some might consider a fact like that a little overwhelming, others might consider it a challenge! But either way, it means that there is an ever-ending pool of discoveries for us fans. No matter how long you’ve been down this dark and twisted path. Perfect case in point, the recently release from Severin Films, Exorcsmo box set of Spanish films made in a time when it was rather difficult to get them made, let alone released. I consider myself a huge fan of the Spanish genre, but this set has quite a few titles I’d never heard of before. But what does this have to do with books? It’s all about learning more about what we love. And I’ve always found books are a great way of doing that.

Book Review: Fulci’s Inferno

Fulci’s Inferno: Faith in the Films of a Horror and Giallo Auteur
Published by McFarland, 2025. 257 pages.
By Matt Rogerson

Anytime I see a book dedicated to Lucio Fulci and his work, I’m immediately in, which was the case for this book from Rogerson. That’s mainly because there isn’t a ton of work on him, which is very sad. I will say this work is more in the “academic study” style, which for me at least, were usually a little too “out there”, with lots of theories as to what the filmmaker really meant, at least according to the authors. But I’ve found that as I’ve gotten older is that while I may still not agree with what the author is saying, and that’s with any author, I really now do enjoy reading about these different ideas or theories and just thinking about them. Doesn’t mean I’m going to agree with them, but I love the fact that it gets your mind pondering different ideas and maybe thinking about a particular film, or even a single scene in the movie in a way you didn’t before.

While McFarland does put out some amazing books, we all know they can be a bit pricy. So, when they have these big sales, now is the time to jump on that title or two that you’ve been thinking about. If you use the code: HORROR40 you will get 40% off your total. That’s a pretty good discount. Plus, they already have quite a few titles on sale. I know I will be adding a few titles to my cart before this sale ends, which will be on Halloween. So, you only have 1 week left. Don’t wait!

Need a suggestion? The volume Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff: The Expanded Story of a Haunting Collaboration is an incredible read. This one is a bit pricy, at $59.95, but with the sale it is only about $36. Or the Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing and Horror Cinema by Mark A. Miller & David J. Hogan which is on sale at $29.95, which means your sale price is about $18! Not to mention plenty of other great titles on a variety of subjects, from the Italian giallo film, Jess Franco, Ray Dennis Steckler, and more!

Book Review: The Cinema Coven

The Cinema Coven: Witches, Witchcraft and Women’s Filmmaking
Published by McFarland, 2024. 208 pages
By Alexandra Heller-Nicholas

Do we need another book on female filmmakers? Honestly, yes, we do. It goes back to my thoughts when I saw The Substance (2024) in the theater last year. Did we need another movie showing us how shitty women are treated in the film industry? Then you realize it is still going on, and that we obviously still haven’t learned enough, so that message must continue on.

So yes, we definitely need another book on women filmmakers!

As a life-long cinephile, at any point when we can learn more about a sub-genre, or subject, that we might not be familiar with, it just opens doors. It opens up more titles that we might not have heard about. It opens up more filmmakers that we might not have known. Or we knew their work, but not who it came from, or who made it. It also opens up, and this is probably the most important part, a new or different way of thinking about and looking at a specific story or subject that might have been lost on us. The beauty of any art form is being able to see something different once we’ve learned more about it. It’s inevitable. And it is one of the things I just love about cinema and more importantly, reading about it.

DtH Episode 91: Author Bryan Senn

by in Discover the Horror Podcast and tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , | 2 Comments

In our search for more knowledge about the horror genre, the films we love, and the people behind them, a lot of started out with the reference books to take those first steps. Years before the internet, these books were stepping stones for fans to learn about films they’ve never heard about and the people behind the films we knew and loved. It was like opening doors for the first time, or ones that were slightly open before, but now are wide open for us to learn so much more.

In this episode, we invited author Bryan Senn on the show to talk about these reference books, especially since he’s been writing about the sci-fi and horror genre for over three decades, in a variety of magazines and even writing his own books on a few different subjects. So, sit back and enjoy, but you still may need that notepad just to write down some book titles you may want to seek out!

Unlocking Dracula A.D. 1972

by in Book News and tagged , , , , , , , , , , , | Leave a comment

This is something that I just love about not just the horror genre, but of its fans. Hammer’s film Dracula A.D. 1972 isn’t one of their titles considered to be an ultimate classic, especially when you compare it to some of the studios more well-known titles throughout their reign of terror at the box office. I know myself that it took a while for me to really come around to see this Dracula tale in a modern setting (for the time it was made) for what it is and finally be entertained by it. But even though it has developed into more of a cult classic over the last 50+ years, it’s never referred to on the same level as say, Horror of Dracula.

So, when I see this new book coming out by author David Huckvale, all dedicated to this one single movie, I applauded it! Anytime that someone takes the time to do the work, meaning the research, the digging deep into the film, from the production to the locations to where it was filmed, and those involved, is a great way for fans of the film to not only learn more about it, but maybe see it in different way. Or even if you’re not a huge fan of the film, the more you understand, it could change your mind, or at least maybe have a better understanding of the final product and how it came to be.

McFarland Slashes Prices

by in Book News and tagged , , | 1 Comment

We all know that while McFarland has some amazing book titles, they do run a bit on the pricey side. Which is why it is even more important to take advantage of this sale they are having. If you buy 2 or more horror books and enter the code HALLOWEEN2024 you will get 40% off the total price. They already had a few titles that I’ve been meaning to pick up, but was surprised to find a couple more that I didn’t even know about.

Matt Rogerson has a new book coming out, called Fulci’s Inferno: Faith in the Films of a Horror and Giallo Auteur. According to the description on McFarland’s site, this book “analyzes the tenets and iconography of Fulci’s Roman Catholic faith across key films in his filmography, plotting an apostate’s journey through his art in the vein of many celebrated Italian artists that went before him. The volume also considers how exploring his faith and apostasy through his films led Fulci to develop an entirely new storytelling mechanism which has influenced genre directors ever since.

The sale runs through now until October 31st. Just click HERE to get to their website.

Books, Books and More Books!

by in Book News and tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , | 2 Comments

Books are a strange thing. When you dig into the details of the publishing world, for every huge best seller, there are countless other titles that barely sell a couple of hundred copies in their lifetime. And with each one of those, the author spent a lot of time on them, years for some, to have them waste away into obscurity.

Happy Saturday!

Fortunately, for people like me and more of a few out there reading this, we still continue to add more and more of these volumes to our library, even though we know the realistic notion of getting to read each and every one of them gets smaller and smaller with each one we purchase. And yet, we still do it. I know for a fact that I do. For me, being that usually get non-fiction books dealing with the horror genre, I never know when I might need to pull particular title out for a little research. I mean, I do it all the time, depending on what I’m working on.
