Discover the Horror Podcast Episode 26 – Conventions: The Fans!

Horror movie conventions are one of the best places to be at if you are a die-hard fan. There’s plenty to see, buy, and people to meet, both new and old friends, as well as celebrities. Horror conventions were a very important part of a lot of us horror fans “growing up” as we learned more and more about the genre, building our collections, or just meeting new people that have become lifelong friends, or even a wife!

This is our first part in a series of episodes on conventions, so we’re going to start out at the beginning for us, such as how they all started for us and which ones did we go to, to the current shows that we still attend.

These are the different conventions that we mention during this episode:

Chiller Theatre, Cinema Wasteland, Cinevent, Crypticon, Famous Monsters, Fangoria’s Weekend of Horrors, Fanex, Flashback Weekend, HorrorHound Weekend, Mid-Summer Scream, Monster Bash, Monsterpalooza, 25th Anniversary Night of the Living Dead Convention, Scarefest, Texas Frightmare

Texas Frightmare Weekend – Part 1: A Trip to Meet the Maestro

Back in the mid to late ’90s, I did something almost on a yearly basis that was one of those stupid things you do when you’re younger…driving from Chicago to New York for a convention, usually in the wintery month of January. I mean, when you have the opportunity to meet genre icons like Lucio Fulci or Paul Naschy, sensibilities tend not to come to the forefront of your thought process. Why pay $200 to $400 for a single plane ticket when I could get a bunch of like-minded horror fans in the car and make the 800+ mile drive there, stay a couple of days, and then make that same trip back. Granted, I was never dumb enough to do it alone, but the first few times we did this, it was in one straight shot. On the way there, we were so pumped full of excitement that the trip didn’t seem that bad. But for some reason the trip back seems sooo much longer. Sure, those long hours in the van were long, tedious, and sometime downright nerve racking. But it was an adventure, to say the least. Now I look back on those days with such fondness. Sure, maybe because I’m not behind the wheel at that moment, but those are still great memories.

Monster Bash Next Weekend

valerieleonNext weekend, we will be making our first trip out to Mars Pennslyvannia for the Monster Bash Convention. This is a show that we’ve been wanting to do for quite some time but just never make it out there, mainly due to the distance from us here in Chicagoland. But we decided that we were going to make it happen this year and the show is almost upon us now. A much smaller and more personable show from what I’m told, it will be a nice change of pace and really looking forward to it.

Of course, one of the main reasons we decided to take th plunge was they have Valerie Leon as a guest, who appeared in Hammer’s Blood from the Mummy’s Tomb. So I will be thrilled to add her signature to my Hammer Films book, making her’s the 13th signature. I know I’m not an autograph person anymore, but we’re talking Hammer here, and for that, I’ll make an exception.

But we will be there with our usual wares, with plenty of horror reference books for you to build and increase your own library. We’ve got a ton of titles in stock, both some new as well as some hard to find and out-of-print ones as well. Of course, my wife Dawn (aka Horror Slave) will have her display of pillows and tote bags as well.

So if you’re coming out to the show next weekend, make sure stop by and give us Monster Bash Newbies a warm welcome! For all the details about the show, just click HERE.
