Nightbreed Soundtrack Expanded!

Almost 35 years since its release, we’re finally going to get the Danny Elfman’s complete soundtrack for Clive Barker’s Nightbreed. Needless to say, I’m more than thrilled. Say what you will about the film, whether it’s the theatrical cut, director’s cut, or any of the extended, bootleg, Cabal-cuts out there, I just love this movie, and have always loved the score.

Originally released by MCA which had 22 tracks and ran 46:42 minutes, it was pretty great. But now, thanks to fine folks at Intrada, we will now have the complete score which runs 75:19 minutes, in a special 2-disc release. The first disc has the complete score, while the second disc has the original release of the score, plus another 21:16 minutes of extra stuff, such as some alternate cuts, and 3 different versions of the song Country Skin, which no version of that is included first disc.

The last soundtrack from Danny Elfman that we bought was his score from Sleepy Hollow, which I hate to say but we were never really impressed with. In fact, it has been a long time since Danny Elfman has blown me away with a score Shame really too since he did some amazing ones back in the ’80s and ’90s. Because of that, I really haven’t been keeping track of what films he’s been working on. But once The Wolfman came out, I knew I’d have to pick up the score no matter what and give it a chance. Boy, am I glad I did.

Taking cues from the music and feel from the old Hammer films, Elfman has given us an incredible gothic and moody score. Sure, there are a few cues that sound very similar to other scores, especially the main hook from John Williams’ score from Dracula (1979). But none the less, Elfman does a great job bringing the violins and other strings that really set the mood and tone for this movie. Being a huge sucker for violin themes, we were really happy with hearing them used over and over here. Throw in some cellos and other strings, and we’re good to go. From the action-based themes to the slower and atmospheric cues, it’s great to see Elfman come up with a score that shows that he still has that talent left in there. We had almost given up hope.

Sleepy Hollow Soundtrack 4-Disc Release!

Back in 1999, the score for Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow, by the one and only Danny Elfman, was released by Hollywood Records. It features a 65-minute score that featured MOST of what was in the film. But now, thanks to Intrada, they are releasing a 4-disc set of this soundtrack! That’s right … 4 discs!

The first disc is the original release from Hollywood Records, with the 65-minute score. Discs 2 & 3 will have the complete 95-minute score, featuring every single note in the film! Then the 4th disc will have over an hour of original and alternate cues, tracks, and versions that were not used in the final score. Some pieces are quite different than what was eventually used.

Goosebumps Soundtrack Review

In the first few seconds of this, you can tell it is Danny Elfman. He seems to have such a full orchestrated sound to his scores these days, full of different sounds and instruments. Some might call them busy. Is that a good or a bad thing? Well, that is up to you to decide. For me, compared to his older scores, they seemed to have lost the deep emotional connection they used to have. The whole goal of a score, for me at least, is to create an audio picture in your head, or emotion in your heart. Or one that just enhances what we’re seeing on the screen. These days, Elfman is always good at the later. They do the job they are suppose to do. But I don’t feel they really can stand on their own, or have those feelings come through the music.
