Mystery Photo 8-16

Yes, I know…it’s Tuesday, not Mondy. Somehow this slipped by me yesterday to get this posted. But hopefully a day late won’t matter that much, right?

Last week’s photo was a shot of the incredible film Metamorphosis: The Alien Factor, this special effects monster extravaganza from 1990! If you haven’t seen this film and love the good old fashion monster effects, then make sure you seek this one out! Kudos to the following for sending in the correct answer: Aaron Christensen, Ron Cole, Dan Frye, Gregg Olheiser, and William Wilson.

Now let us get to this week’s photo. This one is another title that might have slipped under the radar but is highly worth seeking out. So give a peek and see what you can come up with.

Please remember…do NOT post your answers here but send us an email at jon@kitleyskrypt.com.

Madness at the Music Box

20141012_040816Chicago’s own Music Box Theatre has started to announce some titles for their 12th annual 24-hour marathon which takes place on October 15th, starting at noon and running through to noon on Sunday the 16th. We’ve been to every single one of these marathons and have always had a great time. The Music Box is one of my personal favorite theaters in Chicago and the crowds that come in here for these marathons are die-hard fans and are actually coming into see the films and have a good time….not just to party. Nothing wrong with that mind you, but not in the theater while the movies are screening. So we’re looking for another incredible lineup and a lot of fun. From what they have announced so far, I think I might be spending some of my time in there watching them!

Here are the list of titles that they have announced so far:

Do You Know Francesca?

Francesca DVD.jpgThere are a few up and coming filmmakers that are really trying to replicate the style of the Italian giallo film genre, some more successfull than others, such as Hélène Cattet & Bruno Forzani’s Amer (2009) and The Strange Color of Your Body’s Tears (2013). But when the trailer for this film simply called Francesca hit the internet, I would have sworn this was made back in the ’70s, the heyday of the giallo. The look, the color, the music, and of course, the style, is just amazing.

Directed by Luciano Onetti and written by him and his brother Nicolás Onetti, they give us a tale about a two cops on the trail of a psychopath that is set on cleaning up the city of the “impure and damned souls”. The film has won several film festival awards like Director at Buenos Aires Rojo Sangre 2015, Best Production Design at Tabloid Witch Awards – Hollywood Investigator 2015, Weird Visions Award at Ravenna Nightmare 2015, Best Giallo Film at Crypticon Kansas City 2016, and Special Mention at Horrorant 2016 in Greece. Not a bad start, huh?

Ever Hear of Shapiro Glickenhaus Entertainment?

Well, if you grew up in a video store in the ’80s and ’90s like I did, then you are at least aware of some of the movies they put out. Releasing titles like The Exterminator, Black Roses, Moontrap, Maniac Cop, and a trio of terror from cult director Frank Henenlotter, not to mention its fair share of martial arts/action flicks like No Retreat, No Surrender, Shapiro Glickenhaus Entertainment gave audiences some fine family entertainment. Okay..maybe not for the whole family.

Films That Made a “Lasting Impression”

Let’s just say that I hate making lists in general. It forces you to chose or narrow down a “favorites” list. I have way too many movies that I honestly love the hell out of, so getting it down to a list of ten is just impossible. And honestly, I really don’t care for these kind of lists that are always going around Facebook, mainly because I just don’t want to spend the time on them and my above mentioned hatred for lists. But since this quest was to name films that had a “lasting impression” on you, I figured I could come up with ten titles that did have a major impact on my life. But instead of just listing the movies, I figured I’d try and expand on why these certain titles affected me the way they did. Of course, this list could change at any time…day or night.

Plus, since a friend tagged me on this, I figured it was the least I could do to reply. Thanks Jessica…this was a nice little trip down memory lane.

Mystery Photo 8-8

Happy Monday! Trust me, after a long three days at the Flashback Weekend, I’m still dragging a bit. Going to take a few days to recover from it! So let’s not wait any longer and get to going over last week’s photo. It was of course, the lovely Ingrid Pitt from Hammer’s Vampire Lovers. Hard to miss that mouth, isn’t it? Congrats to the following for sending in the correct answer: Hoby Abernathy, Cate Cameron, Aaron Christensen, Troy Howarth, Doug Lamoreux, Ronny Merchant, Eric Rot, Michael Shields, Dave Voigt, and Greg Wojick.

Now on to this week’s little pictorial quizlet. See if you can’t recognize some of the effects going on here. Good luck! And as always, please do not post your answers here, but send us an email to jon@kitleyskrypt.com.

Cult Film Begotten at Music Box…With Director!

begottenBack in the early ’90s, back when VHS tape trading and the grey market were in full swing, a movie would surface from the underground that would start to make a buzz. While even then you were always looking for a really pristine quality copy, when I stumbled across this 72 minute feature film, it was one of those visual experiences that you don’t soon forget. In fact, it is one that you immediately start to tell friends about, that they need to see this to believe. The Begotten, written and directed by E. Elias Merhige, is about….well….it’s kind of like….okay, okay. It is really something that just needs to be seen…or rather experienced. There’s no dialogue, just an incredible stylisted piece of cinema. Years later, Merhige would direct Shadow of the Vampire, starring Willem Dafoe and John Malkovich.
