Horror History: Andrew Prine

Andrew PrineAndrew Prine
Born Feb. 14th, 1936

You could say I grew up with Andrew Prine. When I started watching TV back in the late ’60s, I was seeing Prine on there. Not that I remembered him, but he made appearances on the shows I was watching, such as One Step Beyond, Thriller, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, and even Kolchak: The Night Stalker. Once I started to really get into movies, then I really became aware of this amazing actor, in such films as Simon, King of the Witches (1971), Crypt of the Living Dead (1973), The Centerfold Girls (1974), Grizzly (1976), The Evil (1978), and so many more. In the ’80s, he seemed to relish playing one of the bad lizards in the TV series V (1983) and the follow up V: The Final Battle (1984).

He was always so good and so much fun to watch on screen. He always seemed to make his characters come to life. While we celebrate him for his work in the genre, Prine played in just about every genre, making more than a few westerns, working with names like Jimmy Stewart, John Wayne, and Dean Martin.

I’ve had the wonderful opportunity to meet Prine a few times at shows over the years, even interviewing him way back in 2005, and he’s always been such a great guy to chat with, not to mention giving me hours and hours of entertainment.

Bloodstalkers Hits Blu-Ray!

Back in the VHS days, this title would draw your attention in right away because it had a woman laying on a table with an axe buried in her chest! How could you not rent it?!?! But this is one of those hidden gems that never got a release on DVD. But now, thanks to the fine folks at Garagehouse Pictures, it is coming to Blu-ray in what looks to be an amazing special edition!

Cooking Up Some Lovecraft

Necronomnomnom bookAs a horror fan that loves books, who happens to live with two amazing cooks (my wife and son), it isn’t uncommon for me to occasionally buy them a cookbook that has some tie to the horror genre. Most of them are pretty generic or tend to be more on the treat side, like for Halloween parties and whatnot. But I recently stumbled across a recently published book that looked interesting, so I ordered it. Once it arrived and we started to page and read through it, we quickly realized the genius within the pages.

The Necronomnomnom was written by Mike Slater and Thomas Roache, published back last month from Countryman Press. It is 208 pages filled with 50 different recipes but with a very Lovecraftian twist to them, such as the Gin and Miskatonic drink, or The Great Old Buns, the Deep Fried Deep One, or some Cthus-Koos! Now we have not yet made any recipes from this… keyword yet, but just reading through it is a real treat and has some pretty interesting things that my son Nick has already expressed an interest in trying. Mystery Photo 11-4

Welcome to our first post Halloween Mystery Photo. The difference is… Nothing! Another Monday and another pictorial puzzle! So let’s get to it! Our last photo was from the film Southbound (2015), a really good anthology film that I would urge everyone to check out, if you haven’t already. Kudos to the following for sending in the correct answer: Hoby Abernathy, Craig Clark, Dustin Moravich, and Gavin Schmitt. Well done, lads!

So let’s get to this week’s photo. This is another one that I’ve been trying to get people to watch, so this is yet ANOTHER attempt! As always, please do not post your answers here so that others can have a chance at guessing. Just send your guess to us in an email, to jon@kitleyskrypt.com. Good Luck!

Tis Always the Season…

Halloween pumpkin

Yes, Halloween is over. At least it is according to the calendar. But for us fans of horror, every day is Halloween. It’s a comment I make quite often, because for me, it’s true. I know that for most people reading this, the horror genre isn’t something we follow at certain times of the year, but every single day. It is our passion. Yes, during the month of October, we almost fit in with the rest of the world. But come November 1st, they go back to planning for the big consumer holiday in a couple of months. Hell, those decorations have already been in the store for over a month now! But I digress. Continue reading

Mystery Photo 10-28

Couldn’t think I could let the last Monday before Halloween go without a new photo, do you? Never! But before we get to this new one, let’s go over last week. It’s one of those titles that just upon hearing it makes you want to see it. Well, at least one of the titles it’s known for. The movie in question is Terror Circus, but better known as Barn of the Naked Dead, a title that star Andrew Prine was amazed that someone came up with that! Sure, might not be the greatest film, but I would recommend anything with Prine in it! Kudos to Hoby Abernathy, Ken Johnson, and Gavin Schmitt for sending in the correct answer!

Now on to this week’s photo. I’ll just say it is a newer film and leave it at that. But it is one that if you haven’t seen it, once you know the title, I would highly recommend it. Of course, if you don’t know it, you’ll have to wait a whole week to find out!!! As always, please do not post your answers here so that others can have a chance at guessing. Instead, just send them to us in an email to jon@kitleyskrypt.com. Good Luck!

Movie Review: Marrowbone

Marrowbone banner
Marrowbone (2017)
Directed by Sergio G. Sánchez
Starring George MacKay, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Heaton, Mia Goth, Matthew Stagg, Nicola Harrison, Kyle Soller, Tom Fisher

Not sure when I first heard of this but I’m irritated that it took me two years to sit down with it, because it surely would have been on my best of that year. But I’m pretty sure it will make this year’s list. Yes, it is that good. Continue reading

Movie Review: The Hills Run Red

hills run red

The Hills Run Red (2009)
Directed by Dave Parker
Starring Sophie Monk, Tad Hilgenbrink, William Sadler, Janet Montgomery, Alex Wyndham, Ewan Bailey, Danko Jordanov

Tyler is a film student who is obsessed with a ‘80s horror film called The Hills Run Red. The film was pulled from release shortly after it premiered and none of the cast and crew has ever been heard of again. The director, Wilson Wyler Concannon (played by the always entertaining William Sadler), seems to be one of these crazy directors who think film is something more than just a movie. So Tyler sets out to try to find this lost film, making a documentary about the whole trip. Sounds of the Season!

I swear, if it’s not all the new books coming out that is trying to get my money, it is the soundtracks! Between the scores I already ordered for titles like The Last Shark, The Witch and The Lighthouse (even before I’ve seen it?!?!?), I came across these two that I had no choice but to order! I mean, how can a lover of Italian horror and classic Universal monsters not have these two in your collection?

The first one is for Michele Soavi’s film La Setta (1991), also known as The Sect, or The Devil’s Daughter, depending on which release you got a hold of. With the score by Pino Donaggio, part of this was released on an earlier version by Cinevox, this release now contains 9 more tracks that have never been released before. It also focuses on Donaggio part of the score, where he even plays violin on it. This release is also limited to 500 copies, so if you’re a fan of this movie and/or the composer, I wouldn’t wait too long. The price is $19.95 and is available through Screen Archives Entertainment.
