Monster Bash Next Weekend

valerieleonNext weekend, we will be making our first trip out to Mars Pennslyvannia for the Monster Bash Convention. This is a show that we’ve been wanting to do for quite some time but just never make it out there, mainly due to the distance from us here in Chicagoland. But we decided that we were going to make it happen this year and the show is almost upon us now. A much smaller and more personable show from what I’m told, it will be a nice change of pace and really looking forward to it.

Of course, one of the main reasons we decided to take th plunge was they have Valerie Leon as a guest, who appeared in Hammer’s Blood from the Mummy’s Tomb. So I will be thrilled to add her signature to my Hammer Films book, making her’s the 13th signature. I know I’m not an autograph person anymore, but we’re talking Hammer here, and for that, I’ll make an exception.

But we will be there with our usual wares, with plenty of horror reference books for you to build and increase your own library. We’ve got a ton of titles in stock, both some new as well as some hard to find and out-of-print ones as well. Of course, my wife Dawn (aka Horror Slave) will have her display of pillows and tote bags as well.

So if you’re coming out to the show next weekend, make sure stop by and give us Monster Bash Newbies a warm welcome! For all the details about the show, just click HERE.

Cinema Wasteland Approaches….

cw_show_logoNext weekend, we’ll be heading off to Ohio for the Cinema Wasteland show, which will be their 27th show..that’s right…27 shows. And we’ve been there for every single one of them. That’s right, for the last 15 years, I’ve been heading to Ohio to join a group of like-minded film fans to truly celebrate the films and the people that made them. If there was ever a show that I would go to if I wasn’t a dealer, this would be the one. It is much smaller than some of these other shows, but I actually like it that way. Because each and every person coming through the doors to Wasteland is a die-hard fan, not one that follows whatever is new and popular. This one of the few shows that you can still feel like a fan, not a customer. While I’m not a fan of paying for an autograph at any price, Wasteland head honcho Ken Kish has made it a point to try and keep autograph prices not exceeding $20. I know at this upcoming show, he had confirmation from all but one guest that not only would they not be charging more than $20 for an autograph, but with that you could also get a photo with them at their table and no extra charge. None of this high priced photo-op crap. See…it is possible to set a standard for the guests and stick to it after all. Plus the fact that the guests are so much more approachable at the Wasteland.

You Did What?!?!? – HorrorHound Report…Part 3

incrediblestrangeDuring the show, a guy came up and was browsing through the books and pulled out a copy of the Incredibly Strange Film book published by the Re/Search Publications in 1986. This is a great little book, filled with interviews and articles on some of the kings and queens of exploitation cinema, like Ted V. Mikels, H.G. Lewis, Doris Wishman, Dave Friedman, and many more. As I started to tell him more about the book, he told me that he had recently picked up a copy from ebay, that had over 20 signatures in it from the people involved, like Wishman, and only paid $100. Now, a few of the people covered in that book have since passed away, like Ray Dennis Steckler and Wishman. But just when I was telling how freaking amazing of a deal he had there, he said that he had been ripping the pages from the book and selling them on ebay.

It was at this point where I stopped talking and tightly closed my jaw. I was afraid that if I was to open it, something would come out that could be considered either offending and/or threatening. I just stood there shocked, unable to move or say anything. Now, let me clarify that I understand that some things might not be as important as it is to others. I get that. But the fact that he had an incredible book, filled with signatures from some of the people responsible for making exploitation cinema what it is today, and was literally tearing apart the book to sell the individual pages, really hurt something deep inside of me. I mean, first off…he’s tearing apart a book!!! And secondly, he is destroying a one-of-a-kind piece of history.

To each their own, as they say, but it just kills me knowing that someone had gone through the trouble of collecting those signatures in that book, which was then ripped apart. Needless to say, a very sad and disturbing moment at the show. Lucky for me, the rest of the show was not like that.

F@#K REMAKES – HorrorHound Weekend…Part 2

blobSaturday night during this recent HorrorHound Weekend, some friends and I were hanging out at the hotel discussing the future of the world and other such stimulating topics, when a guy came up to join our little group. He was passing out little buttons that said “Fuck Remakes” and went to give me one, asking if I liked remakes. When I replied that not all are bad, he withdrew the offer. I then noticed he was wearing a t-shirt with the same moniker. Then the discussion began. Now, it is kind of ironic that while I’m reaching an age where grumpiness and generally being an asshole becomes a normal mood, but at the same time, I’m a lot more tolerant on topics and ideas that in my youth I would have rallied against, much like this recent addition to our group. When I threw out titles like Carpenter’s The Thing or Cronenberg’s The Fly, or Chuck Russell’s The Blob, he blew those off commenting that he thinks the studios would be better off putting time and money into projects that were original. I totally agree with him on that, as well as some of the other points he was making.

HorrorHound Weekend…Part 1

I know I’ve said it the past that I wasn’t going to do convention reports but a few things happened at this recent show that I wanted to mention. But instead of one long report, I’m going to break it up into a few different postings over the next couple of days.

In the early hours on March 21st, the Kitley Krew headed off to Cincinnati for our first convention of the year, HorrorHound Weekend. The first shows of the year are usually bigger, which could due to the fact that it is around tax time, or that it just the opening of convention season and people are ready after a long winter. Whatever the case was, they did come out in droves. Sure, it might be because Norman Reedus was appearing at the show, and he always draws a huge crowd of Walkers, willing to pay his $80 autograph prices and $110 photo ops. A few years ago, that drove me crazy. But now, I think I’ve finally gotten over it and it really doesn’t bother me anymore. Besides, good for Reedus to make that money while he can, because we all know that once The Walking Dead show is over, the only job he’s is going to get is when Hollywood is looking for a hick with a crossbow. This isn’t anything against Reedus or his acting ability, but just because we all know how Hollywood works and how they pigeon-hole actors. For me personally, autographs have lost any charm or sparkle that they once had. I didn’t get over to the separate room where some of the celebs were at because I didn’t really care. Had I done that, I might have seen this sign that started a recent big discussion on social media, about two of TWD guests charging $10 to talk to them. Yeah…really hope that is quickly nipped in the butt and will be the last we hear of it. But again, even if I did see it, I didn’t care. As long as fans and Walkers want to do that, justifying to themselves that their money is being well spent, then it will never end. So I’m doing my part in that by not supporting and not paying for autographs. If you want it to change, bitching about it isn’t going to do it. Stop paying…then it will change. Then maybe an autograph will actually mean something more than a business transaction.

What I did do at the show was work at my table, see old friends, made some new ones, and had a blast talking to different people about this wonderful genre we all love. During the course of the weekend, there were some great things that happened, and a couple that was pretty discouraging. I’ll get to those later. But first, one of the best things about this weekend was that the people coming up to our table throughout the three days of the show and purchasing. It a time when book stores are closing, it really showed me that there is still a lot of hope for horror fans, and that they are still interested in buying books to learn more about the genre. From buying books on Boris Karloff, Texas Chain Saw Massacre, or even Hammer regular Michael Ripper, it made me proud to be part of this great ensemble of fright fans. I had so many great conversations with so many different people in those three days. So a huge thank you to each and every one of you who came by our table, and either talked to us (or at least listened to my rants!), and especially that those that picked up a book. It shows me that what I’m doing is not in vain or a waste of time and there are still plenty of fans out there that are eager to eat up this information about the genre we love so much.

Also, I had a few people come up to me and comment on my column for HorrorHound, that they’ve checked out some of the movies that I’ve written about and thanked me for that. I have to say, that has to be the biggest reason and payment for writing that column every issue.

Next up….”Fuck Remakes”

HorrorHound Weekend in TWO DAYS!!!!

I don’t know about you, but I am more than ready for our first convention for this year’s Kryptic World Tour 2015, which happens to be the HorrorHound Weekend in Cincinnait Ohio this weekend….like in two days!!!! After the last couple of brutal work weeks, I am more than ready to hang out with a bunch of like minded horror fiends, and have some fun and serious conversations about horror movies!

Of course, we will be set up there with a wide range of amazing titles to add to your horror reference library. And I can guarantee that you won’t find titles on my table that are $180! I’m more interested in getting this volumes to good homes, where horror fans can learn more about this amazing genre, and to truly Discover the Horror.

And did I mention they are having a Re-Animator reunion?

So if you coming out to the show this weekend, make sure you stop by our table and say hello.
