Discover Unsung Horrors!

At the end of last year, the fine folks who put out the We Belong Dead publication announced they were releasing a regular size book called 70s Monster Memories, with many different authors contributing on a variety of subjects, but all dealing with the monster movies from the 1970s. If you were one of the lucky ones to have ordered it, then you know exactly what I’m talking about. This book is just amazing, completely in fully color and covering some wonderful topics. Now the book is out of print and goes for big bucks.

Hannibal for Dinner

feeding-hannibal

While I’ve been known to have a few horror reference books in my library, my wife has a pretty impressive book collection of her own. Except those are cookbooks. So what better way to combine both of our love and passion for books than to create a cookbook where the recipes come from the darker side of life! Feeding Hannibal: A Connoisseur’s Cookbook is just that book.

Janice Poon is a food stylist and writer that had been hired to work on the NBC show Hannibal. Now she gives us a book that is a collection of recipes that were inspired by the show that are said to be “easy to follow”. Well, I leave that up to my wife and son. Otherwise, if I’m in charge, it could get real ugly. But each recipe is also accompanied with insider information and anecdotes, artwork, and behind-the-scenes photos of the stars of Hannibal. It’s 240 pages and is only $18.50 on Amazon. For a cookbook, that is a killer price.

I think this one soon might be part of our collection!

Monster Party at the Chicago Toy Show

chicago-toy-show

Even though I’m a huge horror fan and collector, I tend to stay away from the horror toys. Mainly because once you start down that road, not only does it go on forever, but has so many side paths and diversions, that your bank account will hate you forever, not to mention trying to find space for all of the stuff you start to find. But I do like seeing some of the stuff, especially the older items that I remember from my childhood, and even more so, seeing how much it is going for these days. That is the reason why I, along with my wife Dawn and son Nick, headed out to the Chicago Toy Show today. As it turns out, it was well worth the trip.

Manos Screening & Book Signing!

Growing up with ManosThe ultimate in bad cinema, Manos: The Hand of Fate will be screening next month at the Music Box Theatre in Chicago, on Nov. 11th at 7:30pm.  Actress Jackey Neyman Jones, who appeared in the film will be there for a Q&A about the film and her experiences being part of this cult classic. Joining her will be author Laura Mazzuca Toops, who co-wrote, along with Jones, the book Growing Up with Manos: The Hands of Fate. For the details about this event, just click HERE.

If you can’t make it to the screening, Jones will be having a book signing at Bucket O’ Blood on Sunday the 13th. No real details have been listed yet, other than this bit of news being mentioned by Jones herself. Once we get more details, we’ll be sure to announce it here. In the meantime, here is the link to their website. Just click HERE.

For those of you that have not yet….experienced Manos, now is not only your chance to change all of that (as well as your life), but you also have the opportunity to meet someone directly involved with the film, as well as picking up her book about the making of it. Not a bad way to spend an evening, don’t you think?

If you want to order a copy of this book ahead of time, you can do that from the publisher, in either hardcover or softcover edition at BearManor Media, by clicking HERE.

Books, Books, and More Books!

Nothing like finding even more titles for my ever-growing list of “Need to add to the Library” that seems to better longer and longer every day, which constantly gives the middle finger to those that say this kind of media is dead. Recently, I have come across some new titles that I know will be upcoming editions to my library. Very soon, my precious….very soon.

The Unrepentant Cinephile

Unrepentant Cinephile

Every now and then I have a little gathering of friends over to watch a bunch of flicks. Might be one of our annual Turkey Day marathons, or just because it has been a while since a little movie-fest and we feel the need to have one. One of guys that always jumps at the chance for one of these get-togethers is our friend Jason Coffman, another Chicago area film nut, like the rest of us. But actually, Jason takes it beyond most of us film geeks, and truly is an avid cinephile. He doesn’t care how large or small the budget is, when or where it was made, he’ll watch it with the same interest. He’ll explain just why he likes a certain film that most would turn their nose at, so much so that after he explains his opinion, it will make you want to go watch it!

Tiny Terrors Fills Little Horrors

Little Horrors

And yet more news of another book I will need to add to the libarary! T.S. Kord has a new book out entitled Little Horrors: How Cinema’s Evil Children Play on Our Guilt, coming from McFarland. I heard about this book from a good friend, fellow writer, and another avid reference book fan, Gavin Schmitt. He had posted a review of the book on his blog and it immediately got my attention. While I might have my own review up here at some point, once I get a hold of my own copy, you can read Gavin’s wonderful review on his site by clicking the link below:

Behind the Screams!

BehindtheScreams

Learn how the actors got into character, whether it is being a scream queen like Heather Langenkamp in the Nightmare on Elm Street series, or Neve Campbell in the Scream flicks, to those that create the characters that terrify audiences, like Tim Curry in Stephen King’s It, or Brad Dourif from the Child’s Play films, and many more from titles like Last House on the Left, Amercian Horror Story, Dark Night of the Scarecrow, Sick Girl, and even Jaws.
