Just because Halloween is over doesn’t mean we still can’t have some awesome movie events, right? And thanks to the fine folks at Facets and House of Monsters, you’ll be able to break in the Christmas season with a nice little spirited double feature of one of the original slasher films, Bob Clark’s Black Christmas (1974) and the highly underrated slasher film Curtains (1983). Both films star Lynne Griffin who will be appearing at this double feature to meet fans, take photos, and do a Q&A after each screening.

Discover the Horror Podcast: Episode 55 – Universal’s The Invisible Man
The Invisible Man (1933), The Invisible Man Returns (1940), and The Invisible Man’s Revenge (1944).
In the pantheon of Universal Classic Monsters, some might say the Invisible Man is the least terrifying in the monster heritage, or maybe even bordering on if they even belong in the horror genre. In this episode, we’re going to delve into three of the films in Universal’s Invisible series, for the most part, stay within the horror genre, though, that argument will be addressed as well! We’re leaving out The Invisible Woman and Invisible Agent, since they are pretty much either a comedy or a war time action film.
Join us as we try to “see” more into these films that maybe aren’t as “transparent” to the casual viewer who might have missed something. Or maybe we’re seeing too much and not finding them too entertaining. Want to know? You’ll have to listen and find out!
Movies mentioned in this episode:
Continue readingBéla Lugosi – The Man Behind the Cape
For fans of Bela Lugosi, I would assume this is going to be a must for their libraries. I’m still on the fence, maybe due to the $150 price tag for the low-end edition (unless you go with the PDF format, which is only $50), but I have to say, it does look incredibly detailed and something that will only go up in value.
Set to be out in May of 2024, this special edition book from Clover Press, will feature not only over 700, but will include “many unseen documents and photos from the Lugosi family’s collection, rare stills, Béla’s personal correspondence and poetry, and artifacts from his professional career.” But it is not just a book of photos. According to the Kickstarter page, “This meticulously researched biography by Robert Cremer is not just another account of Lugosi’s career; it’s a deep dive into the man behind the legend. Through exclusive interviews, rare photographs, and intimate anecdotes from those who knew him best, he unveils the layers of this complex man.”

Mystery Photo 10-30
Back for our last Mystery Photo for October. Man, what a month it has been! That is main reason for the lack of updates here, but we should be getting back into the swing of things. But for now, let’s get down to business. Our last photo was from the 2014 film Musarañas, aka Shrew’s Nest, starring Macarena Gómez and Nadia de Santiago. This is one hell of a movie if you haven’t seen it and like Spanish cinema. Kudos go out to Peggie Christie and Dave Friedman for sending in the correct answer!
Now on to this week’s mystery pic. Take a look and see if you can recognize this title! Just remember to send me an email, to jon@kitleyskrypt.com, with your guess. And most of all, Good Luck!
Richard Moll – Rest in Peace
While he’s mainly known for his role as Bull, the bailiff on the TV series Night Court that ran for 8 seasons, but it was his appearances in some early films that made me aware of who this towering figure was. In 1981, he appeared in a small role as Father Esteban in the film Evilspeak. The following year, while in cased entirely under makeup, he played the evil sorcerer Xusia in The Sword and the Sorcerer. Of course, when he played Big Ben in Steve Minor’s horror/comedy House (1985), between that and Night Court, everyone knew who Richard Moll was.
No matter what type of roll he played, from the evilest villain to the funniest, he always delivered, and was always entertaining. We lost Mr. Moll on Oct. 26th, at the age of 80!
Mystery Photo 10-23
Getting closer . . . just another 8 days to Halloween! I hope everyone is spending a little time to enjoy the season, sitting and watching a favorite or two . . . or dozen! We had our last event over the weekend, so I know I’m going to try and make the most of these last 8 days! But down to business! Our photo from last week was from the film Crawl (2019) from director Alexandre Aja. While some parts really make you push the boundaries of reality, if you’re one that gets creeped out by shark movies, or anything that wants to eat you in the water, this one is pretty fun. Kudos to Hoby Abernathy and Dada Debaser for sending in the correct answer!
This week’s photo might be another tough one, but once you find out its name, you’ll want to seek it out. Trust me. So, take a peek, and see if you know it. Just remember to send me your guess in an email to jon@kitleyskrypt.com. It helps me not to forget! And, as always, Good Luck!
History Hunt in the Land of Rebane!
Last October, we traveled 5 hours up north to Merrill, Wisconsin, for the opening of a Bill Rebane Museum at the Merrill Historical Society, which we reported on HERE. There was talk of some directions to some of the filming sites of some of his movies, since he pretty much stayed in and around Gleason, Wisconsin, which is where his Shooting Ranch film studio was located, but it just never happened. Fast forward almost a year, and Brandon Johnson, the man behind the exhibit, lets me know that they are planning sort of a Bill Rebane scavenger hunt, called the 2023 Merrill Historical Society History Hunt, where teams will be given sort of a scavenger hunt map to visit different locations, and even interact with people that worked either on the films, or were in some way part of them. Without putting much thought into it, I sent out the emails to those that joined me last time and see if they’d be up for it again, which they all agreed!
So, Aaron Christensen and I left my house at 4:15am on Saturday the 9th, drove about 90 minutes just outside of Milwaukee to pick up Dave Kosanke, and then drove another 3+ hours further north into Merrill, getting there around 9:30am, meeting up our last team member, Gavin Schmitt.
Continue readingMore Naschy Blu-Ray!
What could make the month of October even better? The announcement from Mondo Macabro that they are releasing another Naschy film in 4K & Blu-Ray! Going on sale tomorrow as part of their Flash Pre-Sale, you’ll be able to order the 2-disc special edition of Dr. Jekyll and the Werewolf!
Now just so everyone knows up front, there were several of Naschy films (and Spanish horror films in general) where they would film one scene with nudity, then film it again with them clothed. This title is one of those, and as hard as they tried, after searching for close to a year, they could not locate the film material for the export version, which has the nudity. They only had the Spanish “clothed” cut of the film. So, they were able to add the inserts to it to create the uncut version, but this will only be on the Blu-ray disc of the film, where the UHD disc will have the Spanish “clothed” version.
Continue reading25 Years of the Krypt!
That’s right. One quarter of a century, sitting here at the Krypt, plugging away, always with the goal of helping other fans discover more of this wonderful thing we call the horror movie genre. When I started, the Krypt was little more than posts about DVD releases, an occasional movie review, and maybe even some movie news, but always trying to put my own personal spin on it, as opposed to just copying and pasting news from other sites.
