Films That Made a “Lasting Impression”

Let’s just say that I hate making lists in general. It forces you to chose or narrow down a “favorites” list. I have way too many movies that I honestly love the hell out of, so getting it down to a list of ten is just impossible. And honestly, I really don’t care for these kind of lists that are always going around Facebook, mainly because I just don’t want to spend the time on them and my above mentioned hatred for lists. But since this quest was to name films that had a “lasting impression” on you, I figured I could come up with ten titles that did have a major impact on my life. But instead of just listing the movies, I figured I’d try and expand on why these certain titles affected me the way they did. Of course, this list could change at any time…day or night.

Plus, since a friend tagged me on this, I figured it was the least I could do to reply. Thanks Jessica…this was a nice little trip down memory lane.

Mystery Photo 8-8

Happy Monday! Trust me, after a long three days at the Flashback Weekend, I’m still dragging a bit. Going to take a few days to recover from it! So let’s not wait any longer and get to going over last week’s photo. It was of course, the lovely Ingrid Pitt from Hammer’s Vampire Lovers. Hard to miss that mouth, isn’t it? Congrats to the following for sending in the correct answer: Hoby Abernathy, Cate Cameron, Aaron Christensen, Troy Howarth, Doug Lamoreux, Ronny Merchant, Eric Rot, Michael Shields, Dave Voigt, and Greg Wojick.

Now on to this week’s little pictorial quizlet. See if you can’t recognize some of the effects going on here. Good luck! And as always, please do not post your answers here, but send us an email to jon@kitleyskrypt.com.

Cult Film Begotten at Music Box…With Director!

begottenBack in the early ’90s, back when VHS tape trading and the grey market were in full swing, a movie would surface from the underground that would start to make a buzz. While even then you were always looking for a really pristine quality copy, when I stumbled across this 72 minute feature film, it was one of those visual experiences that you don’t soon forget. In fact, it is one that you immediately start to tell friends about, that they need to see this to believe. The Begotten, written and directed by E. Elias Merhige, is about….well….it’s kind of like….okay, okay. It is really something that just needs to be seen…or rather experienced. There’s no dialogue, just an incredible stylisted piece of cinema. Years later, Merhige would direct Shadow of the Vampire, starring Willem Dafoe and John Malkovich.

Serial Killer Film From Isolation Director O’Brien

i-am-not-a-serial-killer-posterSeveral years ago, when I was given the task to pick a title that I wanted to write about for our upcoming book Hidden Horror, it didn’t take me long to decide on the 2005 Isolation, from director Billy O’Brien. I had stumbled upon this little tale and it was not only blown away by it, but impressed as hell with the amount of terror and tension he delivered.

In doing research for the piece, I ended up getting in touch with O’Brien and was able to do a little interview with him about the film and the making of it, which you can read here on the site under our Interviews section. During the talk, he mentioned an upcoming project that he would love to do, which was to adapt a series of books from writer Dan Wells, called I Am Not A Serial Killer. He even mentions that he’d loved to get the young actor, Max Records, who had just appeared in Where the Wild Things Are.

Mystery Photo

Welcome everyone back to Monday. Yes, the weekend is over and we start yet another glorious week! Okay…trying to sound positive, but not sure that came across the right way! But let’s get to our one thing that does seem to brighten up the day for a few of you out there. At leaset we hope so!

Our last photo was from the highly underrated but damn entertaining 1956 film The Black Sleep, with a great cast of actors, such as Basil Rathbone, John Carradine, Lon Chaney Jr., Tor Johnson, and Bela Lugosi. Great stuff. Kudos out to the following that sent in the correct answer: Dustin Moravick, David H. Smith, and Alan Tromp. Well done.

Now this week’s photo might be pretty easy to some of you out there. Depends on how many hours you spent gazing at that mouth over the years like I did…I mean…uh….never mind. Anyway, I thought maybe this won’t be that easy, just seeing the set of chompers here, but I guess we’ll see. But I’m thinking there are going to be quite a few that recognize them. Time will tell. So take a look and see what you can come up with.

Please remember not to post your answers here, but send them in an email to jon@kitleyskrypt.com.

Euro Gothic Anyone?

We mentioned this upcoming book by Jonathan Rigby sometime ago but it apparently had run into some delays. But now, according to the author, it has now gone to press over across the pond. It still isn’t showing available through Amazon over here, but you can pre-ordered it through Amazon.UK, which has a price of £19.98. I’m sure at some point, it will be available here, but no idea when. The UK edition is said to be coming out at the end of this October.
