Mystery Photo 9-11

Sorry for the delay in today’s update with the Mystery Photo, but still recuperating from the HorrorHound Weekend. But back to business. Wait…that was business too…never mind.

So…our photo from last week was from one of my favorite Hammer films, Seth Holt’s 1960 chiller Scream of Fear (also known as Taste of Fear). If you haven’t seen this one, it really is a must. Don’t read anything about it, but just find it and watch it! Kudos out to the following for sending in the correct answer: Hoby Abernathy, Kuba Haczek, Troy Howarth, Doug Lamoreux, and Michael Shields. Well done, folks!

Happy Birthday Paul Naschy!

How fitting to see this in the night sky on the birthday of Paul Naschy. Then again, I’m really not surprised. In fact, every month when I see a full moon, I know that somewhere, our tragic friend Waldemar is going through the change and terrorizing the countryside. And his fans are rejoicing.

While is this is a sad day because the lost his friends, family, and his fans, as well as the genre as a whole, felt when he left us, I am so happy in knowing that his legacy will clearly live on. With all the special edition Blu-rays that have been coming out this year alone, it really shows the love and respect he so rightly deserves. And even better, that it will continue to do so. Younger fans will find it so much easier to discover and enjoy the work of Paul Naschy, though the grumpy old man inside me is more than a little jealous since we had to really work at finding his films! But none the less, him and his films are now a permanent chapter in the horror history books and will never be forgotten, and will live on for future generations to come.

Our thoughts are with you, Jacinto Molina Álvarez.

Long Live Waldemar. Love Live Paul Naschy.

Cinepocalypse Announces Titles

Cinepocalypse, which is taking place Nov. 2nd to the 9th, at Chicago’s Music Box Theatre, has announced a slew of titles scheduled to play this year. But before we get to those, they have also announced that Writer/Director Joe Carnahan (The Grey, Smokin’ Aces, The A-Team) as guest programmer, Simon Barrett as the guest host, with a special appearance by cult legend Eric Roberts, who will take part in a very special recording of Doug Tilley adn Liam O’Donnell’s podcast “Eric Roberts is the Fucking Man”.

Super Monster Movie Fest 2017

Over the last weekend in August, we made our annual trip down to the Skyline Drive-In, located in Shelbyville, Indiana, which is just about 30 minutes south of Indianapolis, for the 6th Annual Super Monster Movie Fest. This is our fourth year going down there for this. We were at the very first one in 2012, but missed the next two. But starting in 2015, we’ve made it every year since and hope to continue that tradition. In fact, another tradition might have started this year. Usually, it is my wife Dawn and/or my son Nick making the trip out with me. Last year, Dawn couldn’t make it, so it was just me and Nick, which we decided to forgo the hotel room and just sleep in the van. Since it only got down to a tepid 70 degrees at night, I wouldn’t recommend that. The van smelled like a gym locker for about a week afterwards. But this time, not only was Dawn coming with, but Nick decided that he was going to get a group of his friends and drive down on their own. So I guess I really planted the love of the drive-in in him. Makes a father proud.

Happy Labor Day! Hopefully you are one of the lucky ones that have today off. If not, you have my condolences! I do, which is why this is getting posted a little later than normal. But let us get to it, shall we? Last week’s photo was from Oliver Stone’s feature debut, the 1974 film Seizure, starring Martine Beswick, Jonathon Frid, and Mary Woronov. The only one to send in the correct answer was Troy Howarth. Well done!

Any Kaiju Soundtrack Fans?

This might come as the good news/bad news little bit of information. If you’re a fan of Japanese composer Akira Ifukube and love Frankenstein Conquers the World and The War of the Gargantuas, then you will now have the chance to own both of the soundtracks for these. Each of them have been digitally re-mastered from the master tapes. For Frankenstein, you’ll get to hear the howling voice and the heartbeat, and with Gargantuas, it will contain previously unreleased music.

Full Lineup for Midway’s Dusk-to-Dawn Horrorfest

Over at the Midway’s website, they have the final lineup posted for this year’s Dusk-to-Dawn horrorfest and it is a beauty!

Originally announced at their show, one of the titles were going to be Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, but that is no longer showing on their lineup. But they still have some other great classics in there. They had already posted that they would be screening James Cameron’s Aliens (1986) and Romero’s Day of the Dead (1985), but now have announced what the other two features are going to be.

Halloween II (1981), the one that I would consider the best of all the Halloween sequels, and one that I still think holds up rather well these days, will be the second feature in the lineup, right after Aliens.

Hammer Frankenstein Book

Hammer Frankenstein ScrapbookI must have missed when they mentioned this on their Facebook page, but Peveril Publishing is putting the finishing touches on their latest book, The Hammer Frankenstein Scrapbook. Just like their previous Dracula edition, it will cover all of the Frankenstein pictures that Hammer did from The Curse of Frankenstein in 1957 to Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell in 1974 and all the gooey bits in between!

Like all of the titles coming from Peveril, this book with be filled with wonderful images, both in color and black and white, and a ton of information about the films and the people behind him. These titles are a bit pricy, especially getting them shipped to here in the states, but they are more than worth every single penny. They are just beautiful editions and are a sound investment as well. They are hoping to have the book out by October or November of this year.

Mystery Photo 8-28

I’ve been kind of out of it this last week, so if anybody out there did send in their guess for last week’s Mystery Photo and I don’t have them listed here, I do apologize. But trust me, its not the first time I’ve done it, nor the last. It happens. But I do know that both Hoby Abernathy, Bryan Martinez, and Troy Howarth all sent in the correct answer, which was from Mario Bava’s Kill Baby Kill, which we just had the pleasure of seeing on the big screen last weekend in Chicago. Great time and great flick.

So this week’s photo might be a little tougher. Really depends on whether you recognize the woman in the photo. Either way, good luck!
