Mystery Photo 12-10

Now usually the films that I post photos of tend to be older ones. The reason for that is because I wanted to bring a little attention to a title that may be getting lost in the shuffle with all these other titles coming at fans each and every day. I picked the film from our last photo for the very same reasons, except this is a film that came out this year and I feel needs to be seen by more people. It is called May the Devil Take You (2018) and was directed by Timo Tjahjanto. Don’t want to give anything away about the film but I found it very entertaining and damn right creepy. Give is a try. Needless to say, nobody sent in the correct answer either. But at least now you have another title to put on your To-Watch list!

Let’s get to this week’s photo. This one is an older one, so maybe this will be a little easier. Take a look and see what you think. As always, please do not post your answers here so others can have a chance. Just email them to us at jon@kitleyskrypt.com. Good Luck!

Mondo Macabro Gives Us The Devil’s Nightmare!

ADevil's Nightmareh yes…another fond memory from the old grey market VHS days. Finding an uncut version of Jean Brismée The Devil’s Nightmare (1971) was something you were always on the lookout. Even if you were lucky enough to score the big box VHS of it, under the title The Devil Walks at Midnight, you still were missing footage. Thankfully it was released on DVD in its uncut form, but now, Mondo Macabro is setting out to do that one even better with its HD debut of a brand new restoration from the uncut negative!

On January 24th, they will be taking pre-orders for their new Blu-ray release of this great Euro-horror classic. There will be a limited edition version, with a standard one being available at a later date. Final details on the specs are being worked out still, and there might be different specs between the limited edition and the regular ones, but here is what they have released so far:

End of an Era

cw_show_logo

No…the show is not stopping. Let’s get that straight right off the top. I don’t want Ken to be emailing me about misleading people! The show will go on, just not with Kitley’s Krypt there vending.

Back in September of 2000, we set up at the very first Cinema Wasteland Movie and Memorabilia Expo, in Strongsville, Ohio. 19 years later, after 34 shows, it is still going strong. We were a dealer at that very first show and have continued to set up there since, never once missing one. In my years of going to shows, both as a fan and as a dealer, which is three decades worth, I’ve never known a show like Cinema Wasteland.

Book Review: The Dr. Phibes Companion

Dr Phibes CompanionThe Dr. Phibes Companion
Published by BearManor Media, 2018. 274 pages
By Justin Humphreys

One of the first movies I rented when I bought my very own VCR was one of my all time favorite films, The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971), starring the amazing Vincent Price, and it still remains the same to this day. How could you not love this movie about this evil genius who sets out to get revenge of those who he believes caused the death of his wife, each one in a very creative way? It’s one of my favorite character’s that Price brought to life and is always a treat to watch. So when I first read about the news that there was going to a book dedicated to the Phibes films, I was more than a little excited.

With contributions by Mark Ferelli, Sam Irvin, and David Taylor, and a forward by Phibes co-screenwriter William Goldstein, author Humphreys has compiled so much information about the first Phibes movie, its sequel Dr. Phibes Rises Again (1972), as well as the many proposed sequels that never got off the ground. Humphreys has done an amazing job compiling information about these titles from the original screenplays, letting us know the differences between them and the final product, finding and hiring the director, the art direction, casting, makeup, the score, and just about everything you could want to know about them! As a Phibes Phan, you’ll learn more here than you thought you could.

Mystery Photo 12-3

Last week’s photo was from a great title if you’re looking for some good old fashion Euro-Trash cinema, Mario Mancini’s Frankenstein ’80, starring Gordon Mitchell as Dr. Frankenstein this time out. Not sure I could “recommend” this title to those new to cult cinema, but I would think it needs to be experienced at least once! Kudos to Troy Howarth and Michael Shields for sending in the correct answer.

Now onto this week’s photo, our first for the new month of December. Let’s see how you start off the new month. Take a good look and see if you recognize this one. As always, please remember not to post your guess here so that others can have a chance. Just send them to me in an email (jon@kitleyskrypt.com). Good Luck!

Movie Review: The Unnamable

Unnamable banner

The Unnamable (1988)
Director Jean-Paul Ouellette
Starring Mark Kinsey Stephenson, Charles Klausmeyer, Alexandra Durrell, Laura Albert, Eben Ham, Blane Wheatley, Mark Parra, Delbert Spain, Katrin Alexandre

The first feature films to be based on the works of H.P. Lovecraft (at least officially credited to him) started in the ’60s with Roger Corman’s The Haunted Palace (1963), based on the story “The Case of Charles Dexter Ward” (even though they billed it as a Edgar Allan Poe movie!). Then we had Die Monster Die! (1965), The Shuttered Room (1967), and The Dunwich Horror (1970). We did see some adaptations in different series like The Night Gallery, but for the most part, it never really brought a lot of attention to the author and his work. Then in the mid ’80s, there was a slight resurgence of his work, starting with Stuart Gordon’s Re-Animator (1985), followed by From Beyond (1986), each based on stories of the same name. Granted, these versions were probably a little more intense than what the author intended, it still got the ball rolling and brought attention to Lovecraft’s name and his work. The following year we got David Keith’s The Curse, based on the story “The Colour Out of Space”, and soon more were to follow.

A Spicy Gift from Krampus!

Krampus Hot SauceJust in time for the upcoming holiday and for a friend that loves to heat things up. Halloween Hot Sauces has once again worked his magic and created an all new sauce for the holiday….the Krampus Hot Sauce! This new flavor is made with Cayenne Pepper and has a medium heat range. Nothing like spicing up the holiday food with a little kick in taste buds!

Or, if you want something a little harder, they also have Grinning Skull, which has habanero peppers, or Smoky Ghost, which has a combination of Chipotle and Ghost peppers. Looking for a milder one, you can always go with Spider Venom, which has Jalapenos. Plus, you can have them delivered in these little homemade coffins! Just a great little addition to an already great product.

And not just us, but our convention family that shows up to enjoy these movies and pizza with us! This is our 16th year holding our Turkey Day Marathon, and there is no stopping us now!

Mystery Photo 11-26

Since it was around that time of year, I couldn’t help but use one of the photos from our recent Turkey Day. The film is Attack of the Beast Creatures (1985) and I’m still waiting for someone to put out a nice little Blu-Ray special edition of this! While wishing, not only do I want a Blu-ray of this, how about a little 12″ action figure of one of the creatures?!?!? If you haven’t seen this little gem, imagine a whole island filled with the little Zuni Fetish dolls from Trilogy of Terror (1975). While there are more than a few sequences of a group of survivors from a sunken cruise ship, when the title happens on screen, it is nothing short of epic. Congrats to the following for sending in the correct answer: Hoby Abernathy, Aaron Christensen, and Alan Tromp.

Now onto this week’s photo. Might be another entry for a Turkey Day marathon. Or maybe just a shot of the afterwards of a Turkey Day celebration. You decide. But as always, please do not post your answers here so that others can have a chance to guess. Instead, just send your answer to us in an email to jon@kitleyskrypt.com. Good Luck!

Bram Stoker’s Dracula 3-CD Special Edition

Bram Stoker's Dracula Lucy

This really must be the year for special edition soundtracks for Dracula films. Recently Varèse Sarabande had released a 2-CD special edition set of John Williams’ score for the 1979 version of Dracula, which we promptly pre-ordered the minute we heard that news since that has always been a favorite score of mine. And now, thanks to the fine folks at La-La Land Records, they will be releasing a 3-CD set for Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992), giving us fans almost 3 1/2 hours of this incredible music from Wojciech Kilar.
