I know we just posted a week or two ago about this show, but hearing this very unfortunately news, I feel I need to post about it again. It seems that this upcoming Moving Picture Show, taking place May 21st-24th, will be the last show. This is what was posted online on May 7th:
“We had hoped to enjoy a long run at the Crowne Plaza, but as a result of poor management decisions including eliminating event staff, we have been rendered homeless. Without the necessary funds to move back downtown, we have made the difficult decision to end the show, with our 2026 event being the last one. We apologize for the disappointment this is sure to cause, but we have run out of viable options.
We are incredibly grateful for your support over the last five years and wish we could see a path forward, but a variety of factors including an aging base, increasing costs, and lack of viable venues have indicated that we have made the right decision in making 2026 our last convention. We hope you will be there May 21-24 to celebrate one last hurrah together. Tickets will be on sale at the registration desk Thursday morning.”
This was some news that I didn’t expect to get but can totally understand their reasoning. We started going to Cinevent in 2016 and while it was never one of our most profitable of shows, we always had a lot of fun. So beside missing one show, we’ve been there ever year. Plus, it was always great to go to an old-fashioned movie memorabilia show. No real guests charging way too much money, but just people there to sell and buy movie posters, stills, lobby cards, and everything else a real movie collector could want. But that is not really what most of this generation of movie fans want to collect. Plus, as many years as I’ve been attending conventions, issues with the hotel have come up so many times, which is why most shows have to move around occasionally. Either the hosting hotel no longer wants the business, or they just treat everyone with not the most hospitality you’d expect, or they are just shady and have poor attitude in running their hotel. No matter what, it bums me out to think this is going to be the last one.
So that means, if you’ve never been to the show and always wanted to, or haven’t been to one in a while, then now is the time to make those plans to attend the very LAST show. Let’s make sure that they know this show will be missed by giving them the support. Who knows… if this is a very successful show, maybe it might help think of some other way to keep it running. Even if we have to take a year or two off, I know we can still give them hope but also showing them our love for all things Cinevent / Columbus Moving Picture Show.
