Growing up in the age of video stores, I was aware of some of the films of Andy Milligan, such as The Rats Are Coming! The Werewolves Are Here! and Tortue Dungeon, just from seeing them on the shelves. But I never was that familiar with him, other than knowing he made some schlocky low budget films. But thanks to Severin Films, when they released their incredible Milligan box set, The Dungeon of Andy Milligan collection, which featured 14 different film titles and a plethora of extras. This amazing set allowed long-time fans, as well as beginners of Milligan’s work to really dig into his films and have the chance to see them looking better than they probably ever have. I know I have watched about a half dozen of the titles so far and have not been disappointed. Yeah, they are low budget, and often like watching a school play being filmed, but I was always entertained by the passion they had.
But what was missing from the set was a documentary about Milligan. I guess that was just a matter of time, because Severin has recently announced that their newly produced documentary, The Degenerate: The Life and Films of Andy Milligan, directed by John Johnson & Grayson Tyler Johnson, will be making its debut at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York, next month. It will feature interviews with a bunch of people that worked with him, such as Gerald Jaccuzo, Hope Stansbury, Jimmy McDonough, Stephen Thrower, Sam Sherman, John Morske, Robert Berlin, Ken Lane, Bob Likola, and Alex DiSanto, as well as an interview with Milligan himself, the only one known to exist.
And for die-hard Milligan fans, Severin also announced that 2 of his long-thought lost films have recently been discovered. The Degenerates (1967) and Kiss Me! Kiss Me! Kiss Me! (1968) have been found, one is Amsterdam, and one is Brussels. Just when you think everything out there has been discovered, something new pops up!
