When you’re talking about British horror films of the ’70s, while Hammer was on their way out as they were slowly losing their audiences to more modern-day horrors, along comes Pete Walker. While he didn’t make a ton of horror films, the ones he did, really make an impact. If you’re not familiar with Mr. Walker and his movies, now is your chance to wet your whistle to (hopefully) make you seek out these films, and his others.
In this episode, we discuss House of Whipcord (1974), Frightmare (1974), and House of Mortal Sin aka The Confessional (1976).
And if you need any other reason to check out his films, then it would be because of Sheila Keith, who appears in all three of these films we discuss. She is a real gem in the horror genre!
These films were mentioned in this episode:
And Now the Screaming Starts! (1973), Clockwork Orange (1971), The Comeback (1978), Count Dracula (1977), Die Screaming Marianne (1971), Dracula 1972 A.D. (1972), The Flesh and Blood Show (1972), Frightmare (1974), House of Mortal Sin aka The Confessional (1976), House of the Long Shadows (1983), House of Whipcord (1974), Schizo (1976)
Also mentioned, was this interesting article on Walker and his films on Nerdist.com. Just click HERE.

My only Pete Walker firm (so far) has been The Comeback. Sounds pretty tame compared to these!

Once again you guys delivered the goods on this Podcast! I have all of these excellent films on DVD and agree that “Frightmare” is the best of the three (“House of Mortal Sin” is a close second). I also have a special place in my (black) heart for horror films from the 1970’s and would love to see you review the films of Spanish director Jose Larraz in a future podcast!

Glad to hear that, Todd! Much appreciate the comments! And we have officially put Jose Larraz on the board for a future episode.

That’s why I love stage actors like Sheila Keith that gravitate to films and TV because of their multidimensionality in their craft…their range that gets translated to a wide diversity of roles. [I finished House of Whipcord, and yes, I did look up another character–the film site. Interesting history, as well as the Littledean Jail’s use as a (still active?) crime museum that, according to the articles I read, has a bit of a controversial reputation as well. To me, the undercurrent (or overcurrent?) takeaway from this movie is the real-life horror it has a nod to, even now.
