Alive and Kickin’

Sorry for the lack of updates, besides a few RIP notices, which are never fun to post. We were at Flashback convention last weekend, and it honestly took a few days to recover. We’ve been there since the very first show and haven’t missed one yet, and always have a great time and so glad to be there to help celebrate their 20th Anniversary show! Mike and Mia and all the Flashback crew make it look easier than it really is, with the staff being so nice and helpful.

It was great to see so many horror fans coming through the door all three days of the show. There was a time at most conventions when Sundays were just for a few stragglers wandering around, but they were still lining up to come in that last day. Always a good sign for vendors! But it really is the afterhours conversations that is the highlight for me at these conventions. Getting to talk about our favorite genre with other friends is so much fun and always a great time.

But I will say that it seems that most fans are interested in spending their money on toys and autographs these days, instead of buying a book. For those that don’t know, when I vend at show, I mainly sell horror reference books. Now, don’t take this as complaining, because I know I have a niche market with what I’m selling, and we do get some regulars that always come see us, or a few that wander over. But overall, the sales are light. And that’s fine. I just hope that the lure of learning more about the genre we love would have more of a draw, but it is what it is.

Also, a big thanks to those that picked up a copy of my book! I really hope you enjoy it and I’d love to hear whatever your thoughts on it afterwards. That being said, not sure how much longer we’ll be selling these books. Honestly, as I get older, carting these books around seem to be getting heavier and heavier! Not that we’re going to stop vending, but just need to figure out what the next venture might be. Maybe just promoting our podcast, or maybe if I ever get around to starting my own small press publishing company, it will be the books that I’ve help create. We’ll see.

Speaking of our podcast, we could use some help promoting it. If you are a fan of Discover the Horror Podcast, please post something about it on whatever social media outlet you are on, with a link to the website (www.discoverthehorror.com). Every bit of promotion could help and posting something on social media about it might just lure in a few new listeners. If you’ve never listened to the show before, no time like the present! Our goal with this podcast is to help fans not only discover new films that they might not have heard of, both old and newer titles, but also give some details and information about films you already know, but maybe will make you think a little differently about. Plus, we’d love to hear some feedback about the shows. Whatever topic we cover, let us know what you think, what some of your favorites are and so on. We’d love to get that discussion going.

Before I go, let’s not forget to plan those trips to the drive-ins this summer! The Skyline’s Super Monster Movie Fest is just in two weeks, on Aug. 26th & 27th, with two nights of Tiny Terrors and Huge Horrors! Click on their Facebook Events page for all the details. Plus, on Sept. 24th, the Midway Drive-in is having their annual Dusk till Dawn Horrorfest. They have announced 3 out of the 4 titles they will be screening: Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (1984), Pieces (1982), and Dr. Butcher M.D. (1980). And if the 4th title is the one that Mike told me he was thinking about, it will make that lineup even more amazing. So, make those plans now and come out for the fun! I’ll be the one eating more corndogs that I should.

Okay, enough rambling for Sunday afternoon.
