Seems only appropriate, on this actual Friday the 13th, that we take a day to reflect on this long running series, to get your thoughts. While some might not be a fan of Jason and his exploits, most fans growing up in the ’80s could help but be a fan of these movies. Right or wrong, some of them are pretty fun, even today.
So… to celebrate today, what is your favorite entry in the Friday the 13th film series? Doesn’t have to have Jason in there, meaning it could be the original or even part 5, but one that you like the best.
Part 4 has long been my favorite of the series, but over the years the much maligned Part 5 has been steadily creeping up the ranks to take the second spot on my list. That said, Jen and I have been plowing through SF’s definitive new box set and I have to admit that 5 may now have pulled dead even with 4 at the top! I understand the complaint that it’s not really Jason and I used to be one among the detractors of the film for that simple fact. But as our beloved Ethel would say that’s “HORSESHIT!” Because if you put that one thing aside, the film delivers on every other essential element of the series and then some! Is it low brow juvenile sleaze? Sure is, but let’s be honest here and acknowledge that this series has never been about presenting some sort of high falutin cinematic art! It’s always been about appealing to the lowest common denominator. So on that level both parts 4 and 5 do it better than pretty much any other entries in the series.
Now that we’ve seen what was cut from Part 2, my third favorite, that one would be an even stronger contender for the top spot as well had it not been shorn of of its most potent bits! Such a shame, but at least the footage is now available for us to see what could have been!
If I may get a bit more nerdy, I’ll add that my favorite Jason is from Part 7. He looks the coolest and, though he may not be in any of the best films, Kane Hodder gives the best performance of the character in my humble opinion.
Some of my favorite kills are the axe through the door, Glover’s death, and Jason’s demise in 4. Bacon’s uncut death in the original. The spear gun kill in 3. The uncut version of the woman in the tent who gets skewered while riding her guy in JGTH. The liquid nitrogen death in Jason X. And of course, how can you not love the sleeping bag kill in 7?!
Lastly, no conversation about the F13 films is complete if we don’t talk about breasts. So I’m gonna put my Joe Bob Briggs hat on for a sec and close by mentioning my favorite pair(s) which is a tie between the fantastically named Debbie Sue Voorhees of part 5 and Julianna Guill’s “perfect nipple placement” in the 09 film.

Jon, I am going to jump off the tracks on this one. I never did like those movies. However, I did love Friday the 13th the TV series!

Can’t have a wrong opinion, Nick! But your comment makes me realize it has been years since I’ve watched any of the series. Need to bust some of those out one of these days.

Part 2 has always been my favorite of the bunch, I think the first 5 are all solid enjoyable watches. I agree with Ryan on part 5, I think its one of he better entries and have since it came out. Use to bug me how much hate it would get, did it really matter that it wasn’t Jason? The first ones not Jason either (spoiler). Also agree with Ryan on the but pair, part 5.

I’ll just put in my thoughts here instead of replying to everyone. Out of the series, I still enjoy the first one the best. But as for the actual “Jason” films, I would have to go with Part 4 and then maybe Jason X. I like 2 & 3 as well, and like someone mentioned that Jason in Part 7 is probably the best looking he ever has.
As for Part 5, I first saw that in the theater when it first came out and felt robbed. Really walked out pissed off. Now over the years, I’ve been told that if you put the Non-Jason thing aside, it is still a really good movie. I have re-visited it twice and I’m sorry to say, but I just don’t get it. And no, I’m not holding the “It’s not a Jason movie” card either, but I just don’t think it is that good and don’t understand the attraction to it. But I know it has plenty of fans, so again, to each their own.
It took me years to watch Jason X because…well, he’s in space, so how silly is that. But once I finally got around to it, I found it to be the most fun I’ve had with a Friday the 13th film since Final Chapter.

I also avoided X like the plague for the same reason back when it came out. But man, did I kick myself once I finally sat down and watched it! So much fun!

I will have to agree with Jon on this one and say my favorite is the original 1980 film. I have never personally been a fan of sequels (in most cases) and of course, appreciated the special effects makeup of the maestro, Savini!
