Wow. Talk about a soundtrack that encompasses just about everything!
The first 11 tracks are musical numbers from the show’s cast, that gives us the feel of the era of when the series takes place. After that, for the next 51 tracks, we get a mixture of music and emotions as we go down this long and winding road into a very strange story. Now, I have not seen any of the show, so this review is just going by the music alone. But I am more than interested in seeing it because of what the music is “showing” me.
After the opening musical track Ardham, we really get a feel of something mysterious and/or magical going on. When we get to track 13, Sundown Town, the darkness starts to really creep in, with slow and low sounds, almost like there is something going on in the background that you can’t really make out what it is, but something is definitely there.
The score ranges from those kind of slower paced tracks to more aggressive and faster ones, like Shoggoth Attack, or the more eerie and tension building tracks like Voices in the Basement or Dead Butterflies. But I have to say my favorite of all 62 tracks is Tulsa, 1921 – Catch the Fire, which is a beautiful operatic piece of music, with haunting vocals.
Karpman and Saadiq have created an amazing score here, one that hits all the emotions through their music and really makes an impact. I’m really anxious to start watching the show and see where all of these pieces come into play!
