Friday Favorites: Halloween Season!

For our Friday Favorites this week, the first Friday in October, I thought it might be a fun idea to hear if there is a film out there that you bust out every Halloween season. One that is a staple in your household that at some point during the season, you know you’ll be watching it. And if you do, is it one from your childhood that brings back fond memories of the holiday? Or is it simple a favorite that just makes you feel nice and scary!

So let’s here your Favorite Halloween title and why?

  1. Salems Lot is the first film that comes to mind. It gets played every October and has for many years. Its a film from my youth that was a very scary and enjoyable experience. Unfortunately my kids found it rather boring… what do they know.

    • You need to re-teach those kids, Don. keep playing over and over until they break! As much as I hated how they didn’t follow the book perfectly, I think they still got a lot of it right and it is so much fun.

  2. The two films that I consider personal Halloween favorites (and have also been playing on the flat screen in the background during past Halloween parties over the years) are “Bride of Frankenstein” and “Night of the Living Dead”. Both of these films are childhood favorites from way back. I also wanted to mention that during the last two years I was pretty impressed that my girlfriend (who is really not a fan of horror films) has personally chosen some good movies (“House of Wax”, “House on Haunted Hill”, and “Psycho”) for us to watch during Halloween night and Jack o’ Lantern pumpkin carving sessions. I made it a point to compliment her on her fine choices!

    • I’ll be going to the drive-in tomorrow night to see Bride of Frankenstein!!!

One of my favorite Halloween memories was about a decade ago. My wife was staying at her parents because they were not doing well, so me and my son played monopoly, answering the door with trick-or-treaters, and watched Night of the Living Dead and Mad Monster Party and just had such a wonderful evening. So yeah, Night is a classic that never gets old, has so much to say about society, event today, and is still effective.

    • I do agree, Jennifer. These movies are viewed all year round, which is why I always tell the “normal” people who ask if I’m happy it’s October, I tell them, “Every day is Halloween!”

I’ve always found that it seems that movies that we “grew up” with are ones that we return to somewhat to take us back to a good time.

As a kid, I used to watch for Mad Monster Party to come on TV, which I just loved. So returning to that always brings back those fun memories.

  3. The only time that I follow any sort of movie watching traditions, is whenever a Friday the 13th happens. Lol! Otherwise, it’s whatever I feel like watching, I’ll watch.

      • I find it more fun to show the kids movies that they haven’t seen before instead of revisiting the same ones over and over again. They’re always asking us to watch “new to them” horror movies.

We did start something that may become a tradition last year that we’re gonna do again tbis year and that’s getting dressed up and watching movies. Last year we watched Demons and Demons 2, but not sure what our choices will be this year yet.

  4. Lady in White!! The beginning has the most wonderful, nostalgic Halloween vibe. It’s such a good film. Who cares if the effects are super dated now?
I also like to pop in Near Dark and Pumpkinhead if there’s time. October is all about packing in as many “new to me” genre flicks as possible!

  5. There are 4 movies I watch every October – Night of the Living Dead, City of the Dead, Carnival of Souls, and Night of the Demon. They each have their own unique creepiness/sense of dread that thrills and delights me.
