What’s Your Favorite…Turkey!

Followers of this site know of my bi-annual tradition of the Turkey Day Marathon, which is always a lot of fun. There really is something to be said about a film that might have tried so hard to be good, but just missed the bullseye. Or in some cases the dart board entirely! But as I’ve always said, if we’re still entertained, then it can’t be a bad movie. Now these aren’t movies that just terrible, but ones that you actually do love to watch. Over nearly two decades, we’ve been watching a lot of Turkeys during those events, not to mention the ones that we watch on a regular basis, and they never lose their charm.

So… let’s hear some of your favorite Turkeys? Would it be Robot Monster? The classic Ed Wood epic Plan 9 from Outer Space? Maybe sometime a little more modern day, perhaps? For me, a lot of these films seem to bring back my childhood, making me feel like a little kid again amazed at what I’m seeing on the screen. The floor is now yours to stand proudly and say “MY FAVORITE TURKEY IS….. AND I LOVE IT!

  2. Like Don, there are almost too many to list (I mean, how many are we up to just from the Turkey Day Marathons?), but if I had to list a childhood favorite, it would probably be Food of the Gods and Empire of the Ants (yes, they are a double feature). Mr. B.i.G.’s finest hours.

    • If we’re going to talk Mr. B.I.G., and Turkeys, then it HAS to be King Dinosaur! Now be quiet or I’ll push you to the ground! Or use this Atom Bomb that I luckily brought along!

  5. So many… lol. But for me, the top of the pile would have to be THE GIANT GILA MONSTER. Charming, goofy monster (and ersatz rock ‘n’ roll) fun. Everybody sing… “Laugh, children, laugh / The Lord said laugh, children, laugh…”

    • While that one is fun, I’ll give you that, I prefer Kellogg’s other masterpiece, The Killer Shrews! While some might consider it a Turkey because of the title creatures’ costumes, I actually found it pretty scary as a kid.

    • I love GIANT GILA MONSTER with it’s 30 year old teenagers. How about THE INCREDIBLE TWO HEADED TRANSPLANT with Bruce Dern? I could watch him in anything. We’re getting into bigger budgets here, but I always get a kick out of FROGS which is supposed to be set in Florida over the 4th of July and yet everyone is wearing sweaters and long sleeves…the animated frog at the end is a hoot.

  7. For me it’s definitely gotta be Howard the Duck! Saw it as a kid when my dad rented the VHS. I must have been at just the right age because it hit me in all the right places, and I’ve loved it ever since. Lol! I’ve always thought that the Dark Overlords were cool and scary looking, especially for my young and impressionable mind!

    That said, I also have to include a new favorite that instantly shot to the upper echelons of Turkeydom for me and that’s Spookies. This one was a case of me seeing/oogling the VHS tape cover in the horror section, at the grocery store, while my mom was shopping, but I’d never had the chance to see the film until Vin Syn put it out last year. Man oh man does that one deliver and then some! Truly the definition of a klassick Turkey if there ever was one.

  9. “Blood Freak” is in a literal sense my favorite turkey! With that wonderful early 70’s film making style; It’s anti-drug, pro-Christian message; and it’s got a frickin’ turkey monster to boot! It’s a blast – right down to the on camera narrator having a coughing spasm (while smoking)! Entertaining beyond anything you would expect!

  10. There was a very low budget film called A POLISH VAMPIRE IN BURBANK – this was actually shown in the 90’s on USA UP ALL NIGHT – supposedly the cheapest movie they ever featured. A few years later, I found this on DVD and picked it up. One of the special features was on the making of the film which was narrated by Forrest J Ackerman. As bad as this movie was – like you say it was fun to watch so it ‘s not THAT bad!

  12. I reviewed a movie years ago for a website and I couldn’t believe how much I enjoyed it, maybe because it was so bad. 1998’s Repligator. It’s too hard to describe everything going on but basically, the military is experimenting with transporters and accidentally turns soldiers into alligators. It’s ridiculous, and the people involved know it. It’s obvious the writer, Keith Kjornes, didn’t take anything seriously and used the low budget to his advantage. It’s just a lot of fun and silly. I made my husband watch it with me, and I think I loaned it to at least one friend. More people need to see this.

    • I honestly don’t know if I remember hearing about Repligator, but then again, with all those similar titles coming out, I could have just passed over it. Usually when the camp is forced, it doesn’t work too well, but I’ll check this one out.

  13. Try CURSE OF THE QUEERWOLF if you liked that one. It’s also by Mark Pirro. It’s not exactly PC, but it’s a pretty funny take off on the original Chaney werewolf character…his name is Larry Smallbutt so that should clue you in.
