This year’s Music Box of Horrors will be taking place on October 19th, starting at noon and going through to noon on Sunday. And as usual, they have the start of an amazing lineup, including the silent film The Man Who Laughs (1928) with a live original score from Maxx McGathey. Of course, the one who won’t be laughing is me, since we will not be attending this year’s marathon. We’ve been to everyone since they started back in 2005 and are really bummed to have to miss this one. But we were already committed to be at the Monster Bash Conference in Pennsylvania instead. Totally forgot about posting this last week! But better late than never. Last week, while we were at the Music Box Theatre for our book launch, I had the great opportunity to sit down with Ian Simmons from Kicking the Seat podcast. The first part of the podcast, we talk about the book and what keeps me busy. But after that, if you’re a lover of Argento and the giallo, then you’re going to want to continue to listen!

After I get done rambling, you’ll get to hear Ian, along with Aaron Christensen (Horror 101 with Dr. AC) and Bryan Martinez from The Giallo Room YouTube series, as they discuss Argento’s 1982 film Tenebre. Ian and Aaron have been discussing a lot of Argento over the last few months so check out some of the older podcasts to hear more.

Discover the Horror Book Launch!

Last Saturday, we had the official book launch party for my book Discover the Horror, at the Music Box Theatre in Chicago. I also had the wonderful opportunity to introduce the film The Giant Claw (1957) before the signing in the lounge area. Now honestly, going into this, I was hoping the film would have a good turnout, but expected it to be 4 or 5 of my friends that were coming out to support me. In reality, there was quite a bit more than that! In fact, we had several people there that had never seen the film before, so we knew they were in for a real treat. Continue reading →

Discover the Horror Book Launch!

Book Cover Art 22819It’s official! After many months of planning, I can finally announce this. On Saturday, July 27th, at the Music Box Theatre in Chicago, we will be having the official book launch for my new book Discover the Horror! To help celebrate this event, we will be hosting a screening one of the most epic of giant monster movies from the ’50s before hand… The Giant Claw!!! One of the greatest Turkeys ever to grace the screens. Tickets for the screening are only $11 and you can purchase them, as well as finding out about the book launch event, by clicking HERE.

The screening starts at 4:45pm, with a small Q&A with me after the film. Then I’ll be in the lounge with copies of my book. The normal retail price for the book is $20, but at this event, we’ll have them on sale at only $15. So make your plans to head into the city in about 3 weeks to see a highly entertaining, yet very cheesy film, and pick up your copy of Discover the Horror!

Cinepocalypse Unleashes Lineup for 2019

Cinepocalypse 2019 banner2Cinepocalypse, the genre film festival taking place at Chicago’s own Music Box Theater has unleashed it’s lineup of films and special guests for this year’s event. Starting on Thursday, June 13th, and running thru June 20th, the festival will have 8 days of features, shorts, events and guests, including 8 world premieres.

Some of the highlights right off the bat would be the world premiere of Verotika, Glenn Danzig’s directorial debut, which is opening the festival, with Danzig in attendance! Director Joel Schumacher will also be in attendance for screenings of Falling Down (1993) and Flatliners (1990), and will be there for Q&As after the screenings. Actor Michael Ironside will be there to receive Cinepocalypse’s annual achievement award, who has contributed to so many genre pics over the years. He will accept this award after a 70mm screening of Total Recall (1990).

The Music Box Theatre in Chicago has already announced the dates for next year’s Cinepocalypse, which was recently named a top genre festival by MovieMaker Magazine. They had over 50 films playing at this year’s festival, with 9 world premieres, not to mention all the special guests that attended the event. While they haven’t announced any features just yet, with the path they’ve been on the last two years, 2019 should be just as epic. It will take place June 13th-20th. Mark your calendar.

Speaking of epic, if you purchase your tickets before January 1st, you can get an All Access Pass for only $100. If you break that down to another 50 features, that’s only $2 a movie. How can you beat that?!?! But you only have a few more weeks, so don’t delay. After the first of the year, they go up to $150 a ticket, so get them now! Or better yet, put it on your Christmas list, or maybe purchase a pass for that fellow horror film fiend. Sure would make an awesome holiday gift!

Chicago’s Music Box Theatre has been hosting these 24-hour marathons since 2005, and I have been at every one of them. There were a few times I was just there as a fan to watch the movies, but usually I’m there as a vendor. When I am set up as a vendor, part of me always regrets not just coming as a fan and being able to enjoy watching the films instead of staying behind my table. Sure, with my wife Dawn there, I could always sneak out to catch a  film or two, but I usually feel bad about leaving her there to watch the table alone. Plus, I always feel I might miss something. We also usually pack and leave somewhere around 2am, figuring sales are usually low or non-existent by then. But this time out, things were a little different. Continue reading →

Notes from the Krypt…

As you’d expect, this is a busy month for us. With events going on every weekend, not to mention coming into Chicago every Monday for something as well, the days are just flying by. Not a bad thing, mind you, but really tough to squeeze in some good horror flicks with all this going on. But this is the path we choose, right?

Last weekend, we were in Strongsville, OH for the 18th year at Cinema Wasteland. Hard to believe it has been going on that long and still continues to be a great time. The draw this year was for a reunion for a favorite of mine, the original My Bloody Valentine (1981) and the Q&A was very informative and entertaining. Although I must admit being a little depressed when they asked a packed room right before the screening of the film, just how many people there have never seen the film before, and about two thirds of the room raised their hands. I would have thought this would have been key film to watch during your slasher education. Or at least, if you were going to a convention that the main guest lineup was a cast reunion from a film you hadn’t seen…that you’d watch it before the show! Sorry…Old Man Kitley is coming out again. Times for my meds.

Do You Like Opera?

Two weeks from today, the Music Box Theatre will once again unleash the terror from their projector, screening 13 features (with 10 of them being from actual 35mm prints!) in this year’s The Music Box of Horrors! Since our last post, they have added one final feature to the lineup, Dario Argento’s Opera (1987), which will be the Italian uncut version, playing in Chicago for the first time! This is actually Argento’s personal 35mm print being screened! How cool is that?
