Lalo Schifrin – Rest in Peace

We’ve lost another incredible talent in the world of film composition, the great Lalo Schifrin. I don’t think there is anyone out there in the world that doesn’t know the theme music from Mission: Impossible, whether it’s from the original TV series or the movie series, but Schifrin is the one that created it. It is one of those pieces that immediately has an effect on the listener. In fact, Bruce Lee specifically wanted Schifrin to score his movie Enter the Dragon (1973) because Lee used to work out to the famous TV theme. He also worked quite a bit with Clint Eastwood, doing the Dirty Harry films, not to mention Cool Hand Luke (1967), and Bullitt (1968), and more recent, the Rush Hour trilogy.

Soundtrack Review: The Amityville Horror

There are some movies that are obviously classics, The Amityville Horror being one of them. But that can be said for soundtracks as well, and the score that Lalo Schifrin created for this 1979 film is also one of them. From the opening Main Title theme, it creates a false sense of comfort with this dreamy, child-like nursery theme, but then also has some darker elements in the background, like a storm brewing! But then next track, Father Delaney, it immediately starts to build up the suspense and the terror that is soon to come. Continue reading →

Matt McCoy stars as Preston, a rich guy who lost his wife, as well as the use of his legs, in a rock climbing accident several months before. Still having trouble dealing with what happened, his doctor has one of the male nurses taking him back to his mountain cabin to help him face his fears. Shortly after arriving, a group of young women arrive at the house next door for their own weekend getaway. Still dealing with the memories from the accident and not wanting to even be there, things get worse when he starts to notice something moving out in the woods. Granted, his asshole of a nurse refuses to listen to him because he’s been complaining since they got there. But then as Preston is watching from his window, he sees something come out of the woods and snatch up one of the girls right off her feet. Continue reading →

Tales of Halloween Soundtrack Review

This soundtrack is for an anthology film, where the soundtrack is an anthology as well. With many different composers working on the different segments in the movie, we get a wide range of musical styles, moods, and dark and twisted feelings! The opening track and Main Title to the score was done by Academy Award winning composer Lalo Schifrin, and it probably the best track in the set. Nothing against the rest, but it is really good. The rest of the tracks really hit the gambit, hitting many different sounds and styles. For instance, the track Sweet Tooth starts out being a very slow, quiet, and very creepy piece of music, very slow in its approach. But then about halfway through, the volume picks up, with loud slashing notes, raising the tension level, before then quietly seeping back down to the original tone. Nicely done.
