Naschy in 3D Is Almost HERE!

I know we posted about September, but with these things, you never know if it is actually going to happen. Especially with something been anxiously waiting over 30 years to happen! But now, it is almost here since Kino Lober has announced the release date and is even taking pre-orders!

For those of you out there that might be unfamiliar with the work of Paul Naschy, which probably means you’re relatively new to this site since I tend to mention him a bit . . . BUT Paul Naschy was a Spanish actor/director/writer and all-around lover of the horror genre. He was inspired as a young boy after seeing Universal’s Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man (1943), mainly the plight of the tragic Lawrence Talbot, the Wolf Man. He would eventually work his way into filmmaking, first appearing in bit parts, before writing a screenplay called La marca del Hombre Lobo. After they couldn’t find a suitable actor to take on the lead role of Waldemar Daninsky, who would acquire the curse of lycanthrope, Naschy was given the chance. And after over a dozen films with him playing the same character (well, in name), not to mention appearing in over 100 films in his career that spanned five decades, his mark on the genre is quite impressive.

Naschy in 3D!!!

I know, you’re probably amazed that it has taken me this long to post something about this amazing news. But it’s here at last. Over the weekend, Kino Lober had announced that they would be releasing Paul Naschy’s debut Waldemar Daninsky film, Frankenstein’s Bloody Terror (1968) not only a 4K scan of the 35mm composite internegative, but there apparently it will be in 3D! Now there is no details on if there will be 2 separate versions on the release or what, but I would guess that is what they will do.

For those that don’t know the whole story, this film was originally made and released in 1968, under the title La marca del Hombre Lobo, and it was filmed in 3D. Here in the states, producer Sam Sherman needed a Frankenstein picture to fulfill a contract he had, so he acquired this Naschy film, created an animated prologue that told the story of a Wolf-Stein, and called it Frankenstein’s Bloody Terror. Therefore, it could fit in with a Frankenstein release that he had promised. Even though it had 2 vampires, and 2 werewolves, but not 1 Frankenstein creature! But no matter what, it did bring Naschy here to the states. And while Sherman wanted to release it in the 3D format, it was just too costly to try and make it work, so they pulled the 3D print after a few screenings and just distributed the “flat” version.

More Naschy Blu-ray!

Frankenstein's blood terror bluraySuch a great time to be a Naschy fan, or if you’re not, a great time to start! Having just received my copies of Mondo Macabro’s Inquisition and Scream Factory’s Paul Naschy Collection, we know the Year of Naschy will continue. Code Red had already announced titles like Mummy’s Revenge and Assignment Terror. But now, they have recently announced that they will also be releasing the first movie starring everyone favorite werewolf, Waldemar Daninsky, the 1968 film Frankenstein’s Bloody Terror! Okay, the original title is La Marca del Hombre Lobo, but most American fans first discovered this movie under the title Frankenstein’s Bloody Terror, after Sam Sherman came up with that moniker to sell it as a Frankenstein film, even though there isn’t nothing close to that character in the film! But I digress….

Code Red has announced that this new print will be from a brand new 2k scan and will be the uncut international version, not the edited American version. So once again, I will be more than happy to upgrade to Blu-ray to show my support of Naschy’s work, what companies like Code Red are doing to keep these films (and the people that made them) alive! And you should do the same! By buying this release, the fans are showing that we will support this kind of entertainment, than some of the dreck that is coming out of Hollywood these days that they are trying to pas off as quality horror entertainment.
