Obviously, the title of our show, and its mission statement is about discovering new horror, In the past we’ve always brought films to the table that we already liked and wanted to discuss. But on this episode, we were given a unique opportunity. We were given a list of somewhat obscure Hong Kong-created black magic horror films which contained titles that none of us had seen, and it gave us an idea: maybe this time Aaron, Damien and Jon would be the ones who discover the horror! We each picked a film we’d never seen but sounded interesting, and on episode 45, we share our thoughts on these very unique films.

If you’ve not spent time in the utterly unhinged world of Hong Kong black magic horror, and are fond of the surreal, the impossible and the inexplicable, we think this show might just be for you. Scorpion attacks, maggoty necrophilia, rats leaping from the mouths of dead fathers… this episode has it all.

Unearthed Films Unleashes The Untold Story on Blu-Ray!

Back in the day when I was renting a ton of Honk Kong films from a laserdisc store (if that doesn’t date this), anytime you came across a Category III movie, you knew you were in for something intense, whether it be nudity, gore, or just the subject matter. But I was not expecting what I got when I rented The Untold Story. It starred Anthony Wong, who I just loved from action flicks like Hard-Boiled (1992), to Full Contact (1992), to The Heroic Trio (1993), to even more tragic stories like Taxi Hunter (1993), so I knew I was going to be in for another great performance. But I had no idea what I was in for when I first took home this one, which brings new meaning to the word brutal. Even more amazing is that Wong took home a Best Actor Award in Hong Kong for his role in this movie!

Now, thanks to the fine folks over at Unearthed Films, not only will this film be available here in the states for the first time on Blu-ray in its restored version, but it has a ton of extras included, which are listed below.

If you are a bit squeamish, this is not for you. It is gory, brutal, and pretty terrifying in what happens on screen, as Wong’s character goes crazy, using his fellow employees (and their families) as meat for the restaurant’s pork buns! Back in the late 90’s, Hong Kong films started to make their way into the American cult market, while it would be a few more years before Hollywood took notice of the likes of Jackie Chan and John Woo. At that time, while I was diving head first into the action stuff, I was also discovering the horror flicks coming from there as well. Just like they did with their action titles, some of their horror titles were like nothing we’d seen here in the states. For those who might not be familiar with Hong Kong horror, some may be more fantasy based, and even had some strange humor about, there were more than a few titles that you better have a strong stomach! When you get to hear about a sub-sub-genre of films referred simply as “bug-barfing movies”, you kind of know what you’re getting into.
