The Blob (1958) & The Blob (1988)

Continuing our theme of taking a deep dive into an original film and its remake, this time we’re looking at a pair with exactly 30 years between them: The Blob, from 1958, and its 1988 remake. A lot had changed in those three decades, especially on the technical side, with advancements in special makeup effects definitely upping the ante on what we see on screen. But the remake also retains much of the same small-town feel and trappings of the original. With these two entries, it’s interesting to see the similarities just as much as how the remake plays out as its own creature, sometimes winking at the original but ultimately leaving its own gelatinous footprint.

For those out there that love to hate on remakes, here’s yet another pair that break the mold and had given us two entertaining entries. Sit back and enjoy!

King on Screen Documentary

Hitting select theaters on Aug. 11th, and then On Demand and Blu-ray on Sept. 8th, is director Daphné Baiwir’s film King On Screen, which takes a look at the different films and series that have been based on the works of writer Stephen King. More than 50 directors have adapted King’s work, in more than 80 films and series, which makes him the most adapted author alive in the world. While mostly known for his horrific tales, there are some out there that are not in that genre, showing just how talented of a storyteller King is.

This new documentary talks to those that have directed or worked on those adaptations, giving us possible answers to why his work is so important and popular. You’ll hear from such names as Frank Darabont, Mick Garris, Mike Flanagan, Tom Holland, Amy Irving, Vincenzo Natali, Greg Nicotero, Mark L. Lester, André Øvredal, Dee Wallace, Lewis Teague, Tim Curry, James Caan, and many more.

Dust-to-Dawn Horrorfest at the Midway Next Weekend!

Next weekend we will be heading out the Midway Drive-In for their annual Dust-to-Dawn Horrorfest, and this year they have one hell of a lineup. Then again, they always do! This year’s lineup consists of the following titles:

The Thing (1982) – John Carpenter’s incredible remake that has never lost its impact!
The Blob (1988) – Chuck Russell & Frank Darabont’s excellent remake of this great classic, and one that still holds up.
The Funhouse (1981) – One of Tobe Hooper’s lesser known films but that is a great chapter to his long career.
Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers (1988) – With a title like that, can you tell it was directed by Fred Olen Ray? Starring Linnea Quigley, Michelle Bauer, and Leatherface himself, Gunnar Hansen. As the ads say, “They Charge an Arm and a Leg!”
