Cooking Up Some Lovecraft

Necronomnomnom bookAs a horror fan that loves books, who happens to live with two amazing cooks (my wife and son), it isn’t uncommon for me to occasionally buy them a cookbook that has some tie to the horror genre. Most of them are pretty generic or tend to be more on the treat side, like for Halloween parties and whatnot. But I recently stumbled across a recently published book that looked interesting, so I ordered it. Once it arrived and we started to page and read through it, we quickly realized the genius within the pages.

The Necronomnomnom was written by Mike Slater and Thomas Roache, published back last month from Countryman Press. It is 208 pages filled with 50 different recipes but with a very Lovecraftian twist to them, such as the Gin and Miskatonic drink, or The Great Old Buns, the Deep Fried Deep One, or some Cthus-Koos! Now we have not yet made any recipes from this… keyword yet, but just reading through it is a real treat and has some pretty interesting things that my son Nick has already expressed an interest in trying. Feeding Hannibal: A Connoisseur’s Cookbook
By Janice Poon

Published by Titan Books, 2016. 240 pages.

Okay…am I really reviewing a cookbook here on the Krypt? As a matter of fact, I am. But this isn’t just any cookbook, but one made for a cannibal. Okay, not a real cannibal, but one of the most famous ones on TV, Hannibal Lecter. Poon was the chef and food stylist on the show that had to create all the different foods that Hannibal creates for (and of) his guests. This is a real cookbook to make real food. And it is simply art to look through.

Hannibal for Dinner

While I’ve been known to have a few horror reference books in my library, my wife has a pretty impressive book collection of her own. Except those are cookbooks. So what better way to combine both of our love and passion for books than to create a cookbook where the recipes come from the darker side of life! Feeding Hannibal: A Connoisseur’s Cookbook is just that book.

Janice Poon is a food stylist and writer that had been hired to work on the NBC show Hannibal. Now she gives us a book that is a collection of recipes that were inspired by the show that are said to be “easy to follow”. Well, I leave that up to my wife and son. Otherwise, if I’m in charge, it could get real ugly. But each recipe is also accompanied with insider information and anecdotes, artwork, and behind-the-scenes photos of the stars of Hannibal. It’s 240 pages and is only $18.50 on Amazon. For a cookbook, that is a killer price.

I think this one soon might be part of our collection!
