Exhumed Films - Spanish Horrors

If the east coast survives this lastest snowageddon, in February, the fine folks at Exhumed Films are putting on an amazing triple feature that is putting the spotlight on some awesome Spanish Horror films. I’m sure my feelings might have something to do with the fact that two out of the three films are Paul Naschy films, but that is purely beside the point.

On Friday, Feb. 12th, starting at 7:30pm, they will be screening the following films, all from 35mm prints (which impresses me even more!):

Antiviral Screening with Director Attending

Antiviral screeningIf your in the area of DePaul University this Thursday (Oct. 29th), they will be having a FREE screening of Brandon Cronenberg’s feature debut film Antiviral, plus an extensive interview and Q&A with the director after the screening. The event starts at 5:30, with a “Haunted House” interactive exhibit, followed by a Halloween-themed improv comedy. Then at 6:30, they will screen the film, followed by the Q&A.

24 Hours of Madness…The Music Box of Horrors!

Every October, the Music Box Theatre in Chicago unleashes it’s 24-hour horror movie marathon, something they have been doing for over 10 years. And this October 24th, they are getting ready to do it once again. But this time out, I think it might be a little different. This year, they have their new addition of the lounge in the theater, which is going to be perfect for vendors to be set up, so it won’t be as crowded between movies while people are coming and going. Plus, it will give more options for people to sit and relax while not in the theater.

Xtro_posterThey are still announcing the films, but have so far announced the following: Child’s Play 2, Deep Red (the Hatchet Murders cut), Serpent and the Rainbow, the unrated version of Frank Henenlotter’s Frankenhooker, Jack Hill’s Spider Baby, which are all presented in 35mm prints, as well as Lon Chaney’s The Unknown, with a live organ accompaniment. Not only is this one of my favorites of Chaney’s work, but anytime you have the chance to see one of his pictures on the big screen, it really is a must. Seeing his talent on screen is just incredible.

Yes, they did drop Let Sleeping Corpses Lie from the lineup, which I have to say I was very bummed to hear. But they have added another title that is going to be a real treat. In 1982, director Harry Bromley Davenport gave us Xtro, a movie that showed us that all aliens weren’t as friendly as E.T. If you haven’t experienced this strange, gory, and trippy tale of an alien visitor, then you are in for a treat. You will see things in this movie that you probably have never seen before, like a woman giving birth to a full grown man. Let’s just say it gets a bit messy. This is also being presented from the only 35mm print known to exists. So this title alone makes it worth you coming out for this event.

Music Box of Horrors Tickets Giveaway…THE WINNERS!

The answer was in fact the 1973 film The Legend of Blood Castle, also known as Ceremonia Sangrienta, Blood Castle, Bloody Countess, The Female Butcher, and a few more titles. Grau made this film right before making his version of a zombie film, Let Sleeping Corprses Lie, which also has a variety of AKA’s. Here’ the trailer Grau’s take on the famous Hungarian Countess.

Music Box of Horrors Free Ticket Trivia!

Music Box of Horrors Giveaway

let-sleeping-corpses-lie-1For those who didn’t know, the Music Box of Horrors returns this year on October 24th for another 24-hours of movies, mayhem and madness. They have only announced a few titles so far, more recently the addition of Jorge Grau’s Living Dead at the Manchester Morgue (aka Let Sleeping Corpses Lie, amongst about a dozen other titles). Needless to say, I was very excited to hear that, since this is one of my favorite European zombie films. Made only a few years after Romero’s Night of the Living Dead, and amazing gore effects by Italian mastro Giannetto De Rossi (Zombie, The Beyond, House by the Cemetery), Grau gave us something that was slightly different in the zombie mythology, with a little bit of a enviromental message, and one hoot of a undead flick. If you haven’t seen this, then now is your chance to not only see it, but see it on the big screen! The Krypt will be vending once again this year, so we’ll have our usual wares of horror reference books for you to help with your horror education.

Tickets for this onslaught of horror are only $25 if you purchase them before October 1st. Between the 1st and Oct. 23rd, the tickets will be $30, and then $35 at the day of the show. So you should really order your tickets now and save that extra little bit of cash.

Upcoming Movie Events!

nightmareelmstNo better way to get into the upcoming Halloween season than to plan some all night movie marathons of some classic movies, right? Well, there’s a couple of events coming up in the Chicago area over the next couple of months that everyone should not only know about, but make plans to attend at least some of them. Of course, it is not just because we are going to have a vendor table set there either! But honestly, these are the kind of events where crazy horror film fans can get together and celebrate some incredible films amongst their peers!

The first event is in a little over two weeks away, on Sept. 19th, at the Midway Drive-In, for their annual Dusk to Dawn Drive In Horror Fest. We’ve been to the Midway countess times and always have a blast there. For this event, they are screening a couple of features in tribute to Wes Craven, with screenings of A Nightmare on Elm Street and the original Hills Have Eyes. But they are also screening An American Werewolf in London and Motel Hell. Lots of fun to be had there. Of course, there will also be plenty of vintage trailers and classic drive-in advertisements, as well as yours truly set up outside the concession booth, along with our good friends at Lix. Come and Celebrate the Drive-In!

midway-phantasmSure, this might not be the first time I’ve waved this flag, but there are a couple of events coming up that I wanted to bring to everyone’s attention. As I’ve posted before, next weekend the Kitley crew will be heading down just south of Indianapolis, to the Skyline Drive-in in Shelbyville. The are holding their annual 3-night all night monster movie marathon. We won’t be leaving until late on Friday but am still hoping to catch the last 3 titles scheduled. Then we will be staying over night and catching all 5 titles on Saturday night. Having the opportunity to see films like Tarantula, Horror Express, Island of Lost Souls, not to mention the original King Kong, really is like dream come true for a movie nut like me. But the drive-in is so much more than just the movies. Yes, it is a great time, but it is also that step back into time, when going to the drive-in really was an experience and one that is remembered for years to come. Dark Star: H.R. Giger’s World – Chicago Premiere

I think we could all agree that Ridley Scott’s film Alien would not have been the same, or even close to it, had it not been for the incredible original and stylistic artwork from H.R. Giger. Now, thanks to documentarian filmmaker Belinda Sallin, you can have a closer look at Giger and his last years of life in this new film called Dark Star: H.G. Giger’s World. You can see the Chicago premiere at Facets in the city, which start on Friday August 21st. For more information about this screening, as well as many other interesting titles, just click HERE.

Super Monster Movie Fest 2015 – The Fur is Going to Fly!

kingkongAt the end of August, at the Skyline Drive-In Theater in Shelbyville, IN (just south of Indianapolis), they are holding their annual festival of classic monster movies being screened over 3 days. We were there for one of them a few years ago and have been trying to get back again for the fun, but just don’t seem to make it. But once again, we’re going to try to make it this year.

Starting on Friday, Aug. 28th, they will be screening Mighty Joe Young (1949), Hammer’s Curse of the Werewolf (1961), Island of Lost Souls (1932), Tarantula (1955), and Horror Express (1972). Then on Saturday the 29th, they will be showing the original King Kong (1933), American Werewolf in London (1981), Hammer’s Abominable Snowman (1957), Toho’s War of the Gargantuas (1966), and then Teenage Monster (1958). On Sunday, they will have repeat screenings of Curse of the Werewolf, Island of Lost Souls, and Abominable Snowman. I can’t tell you how excited I am thinking of having the chance to see some of these amazing films on a huge screen, not to mention at a drive-in! How cool is that? I mean seriously….the original King Kong!?!?!
