Music Box of Horrors 2019

Music Box of Horrors 2019The Music Box of Horrors has unleashed its final lineup for this year’s 24-hour marathon. And as always, they have gathered together one hell of lineup with some amazing titles in there, as well as a couple of great guests. Director John Hancock will be on hand for a screening of his highly underrated film Let’s Scare Jessica to Death. Very creepy and a must see. They will also be screening Dog Soldiers, one of the best werewolf movies to come out in the last two decades, with director Neil Marshall in attendance!

Taking place on Saturday, Oct. 19th, starting at noon and running to noon on Sunday the 20th. As we mentioned before, this will be the very first Music Box marathon that we will be missing and it really bums me out. But I’m guarantying those that come out to this will have a great time, just like the previous years. Continue reading

Dracula & Frankenstein on the Big Screen!

monster double feature

Back in 1938, a theater owner named Emil Umann rented prints of the original Dracula and Frankenstein, along with Son of Kong, and screen them as a triple feature. He got the rental of the films pretty cheap because the studios didn’t think anybody cared about these monster films anymore. Oh how they were wrong. These screenings became so popular, that Umann started running them close to 24 hours a day to keep up with the demand. He even contacted Bela Lugosi to come down to make appearances during the screenings. Once Universal discover this, not only did they increase the film rentals, but made 500 more prints and started renting them to other theaters. Plus, they immediately put another Frankenstein film into production!

If you haven’t had the chance to see these two classic monster films on the big screen and are in the Chicagoland area, now is your chance. The Pickwick Theater in Park Ridge, IL, will be screening both Dracula and Frankenstein on October 30th, starting at 7pm. The Pickwick is a great theater to see these films too! So make your plans now to make sure you attend and see our horror history come to life on the big screen!

Music Box of Horrors 2019

This year’s Music Box of Horrors will be taking place on October 19th, starting at noon and going through to noon on Sunday. And as usual, they have the start of an amazing lineup, including the silent film The Man Who Laughs (1928) with a live original score from Maxx McGathey. Of course, the one who won’t be laughing is me, since we will not be attending this year’s marathon. We’ve been to everyone since they started back in 2005 and are really bummed to have to miss this one. But we were already committed to be at the Monster Bash Conference in Pennsylvania instead. Midway’s Dusk to Dawn Horrorfest

Midway sunset cropped

At the recent Flashback Weekend, they announced the date for this year’s Dusk to Dawn Horrorfest and 3 out of the 4 features they will be screening. And as always, it is one you are not going to want to miss.

Taking place on Saturday, Sept. 21st, they will be screening undoubtedly one of the scariest films ever made, The Exorcist (1973). I know the first time I watched this was on TV in the severely edited version and it still kept me awake at night. It is a film that still packs a punch and has not lost any of its effectiveness to creep into the audiences’ psyche. With great performances from Jason Miller, Max Von Sydow, Lee J. Cobb, Linda Blair, and of course, Ellen Burstyn, who gives a performance that I think is one of the reason this movie is so powerful, since we are living through her character. Not to mention the incredible makeup effects by Dick Smith (and his young assistant Rick Baker). Seeing this one the big screen will really be a religious experience! Continue reading

Drive-in Super Monster-Rama

Well, they finally announced the complete lineup for the fall Super Monster-Rama and I am doing all I can to try and figure out a way to make it to this one. I mean, how can any self-respecting Paul Naschy fan skip out on seeing not one, not two, but THREE Naschy flicks on the big screen?!?!? Plus, it is a Spanish horror theme for the whole weekend. If a triple dose of Naschy wasn’t enough, then about adding in Blind Dead film? Or Jorge Grau’s amazing zombie flick, Living Dead at the Manchester Morgue! Then you throw in some rare & obscure titles like Graveyard of Horrors and The Dracula Saga, that just makes the cake.

driveinmonsterama2019

So while I’m still trying to figure out a way, you should start making your plans to head out to this event. It takes place on Friday, Sept. 20th and Saturday, Sept. 21st, at the Riverside Drive-in in Vandergrift, PA.
