I know with the amount of attention this has been getting, from all over social media to just the fans aching to see and hear more about not only one of their favorite films, but let’s face it… it’s simply one of the greatest horror films ever made. Am I right? But why this post when everyone in the horror genre already knows about it, possibly even supported the online support process to get your name in the credits as well as some cool additional stuff besides the documentary. Simple. Because we need to remember the fact that upon its initial release, it was hated by most critics and the general public. But us fans… we knew then how fantastic and incredible this film was. And we supported it then and continued to support it until those lame critics faded away, along with those words they wrote some 40+ years ago. Unlike those words, this movie has lasted.
From the same creators as the Aliens Expanded, which ran damn near 5 hours, with such depth and coverage, we are now going to take that same deep dive into John Carpenter’s 1982 masterpiece. It’s just a shame that the entire cast isn’t around to partake in this, because that is about the only thing I can think of that would make this better. But that being the only negative, it is so great to see a film that real horror fans championed for decades, when most would cringe or turn their faces away, we knew it was special. We knew that it wasn’t just the mind-blowing effects created by a crazy 23-year-old special makeup wizard, Rob Bottin, but that Carpenter, along with screenwriter Bill Lancaster, created a highly effective story about paranoia, that was brought to life by an amazing ensembled cast. It really is a perfect film and one that holds up today.
In this massive undertaking, we get to hear from the cast: Kurt Russell, Keith David, Richard Masur, Peter Maloney, Thomas G. Waites, David Clennon, and Joel Polis. The director John Carpenter and some of the crew: Dean Cundy, Stuart Cohen, Larry Franco, and Todd C. Ramsay. And then a variety of others that like us, knew the importance of this film. People like: Frank Darabont, Eli Roth, Guillermo del Toro, Stephen Colbert, Greg Nicotero, Issa Lopez, Matthijs van Heijningen, Chuck Russell, Mick Garris, Alec Gillis, Matt Winston, Den Diaz, Margaret Beserra, Erik Jensen, David Johnson-McGoldrick, Phil Nobile Jr., Anne Billson, Phil Hore, Nathalie Cabrol, and Wayne White.
So that fact that they are making this The Thing Expanded is just something that us fans can really celebrate and be excited to revisit that world all over again.
