Voces, under the title Don’t Listen, was a film I stumbled upon on Netflix one night, not knowing that it was a Spanish made film, but was immediately captivated by the story, and the frightening way it was played out. One of the things that helped that was the soundtrack. This is not a score of melodies and themes, but of sounds. Sounds like you’d expect to hear in a nightmare. These could be anything from soft noises from afar that slowly build up a little louder and louder until you think you can make out what exactly the sound is, before it disappears into the distance.
When I use the term sounds, it doesn’t sound like normal instruments from an orchestra for the most part, but like whining and screeching strings, disembodied voices, or a few other audio bits that have you pondering just what is that sound? In a few moments, it kind of reminded me of sort of like a whale call, yet somewhat demented or twisted in some way, like something is just not right.
Jesús Díaz has done an incredible job taking a story that starts out with being about sounds coming from an innocent walkie-talkie, into a story about voices from beyond, one that can be creepy, or downright terrifying!
If you’re looking for some incredible eerie sounding ambiance background, I think you’ll love this one. There are a lot of strange, disturbing, and even entrancing sounds throughout this whole score. I love having it playing in the background while I’m working.
